For five generations the Bigham family was known in the Pee Dee region of South Carolina for their superior intelligence and power and their contempt for the law. This powerful account traces the family\x27s chilling history to the sensational mass murder in 1921 and follows the six years of trials of Edmund Bigham, the sole remaining family member who was accused of the slaying. Includes courtroom testimony.
This a good illustration of greed, family, history and cultural dynamics run astray. I grew up in Pamplico, SC and heard bits and pieces of the story growing up. I love a true crime novel and it was as added bonus that I could relate to the setting.
This story is about a famous murderous family that actually resided not far from Pamplico, SC which is where I went to school at so if true local murder mysteries interest you, check this one out. P.S. the author actually lives (lived?) in Pamplico.
Not my first read of this, but my first read for researching a story I want to tell, and I loved it more the second time. Fascinating local history. Much love for Mrs. Kitty.
This isn’t an easy read, I can understand how some people may not find this book to be the greatest book written but I will forever love this book because I have family who knew the Bighams and have stories of their own. Unfortunately that generation has passed on but I’ll forever have those memories and anytime I read this book, I am reminded of my Great Grandparents.
One good thing about the hurricane aftermath of losing power I had the chance to read a book, book (non-e-reader). Granted I did have all 3 of my kindles charged. But on to my review... This is a true story about a family close to my current home. It was somewhat weird and interesting to see family names that I actually know of. I can't say that I have ever heard of the Bigham family but their neighbors I knew. Although written about true life events the story was a great read, very well written for true crime story. Definitely would recommend this for those that love true crime or are looking for their first delve into true crime.
I read this book bc my great uncle was a witness in the trial and discovered the murdered sister. There was a lot more killing and death in this book than I originally thought!!
