Charlie loves things that go—planes, trains, bicycles, scooters, and even spaceships! He also loves to share in the fun of each mode of transportation with his dad. But, for Charlie, the best ride of all is when his dad swoops him up onto his shoulders for a piggyback ride! The first in a fresh, new board-book series takes the evergreen concept of transportation and gives it a tender, loving twist. Perfect for new dads and Father’s Day promotions, Charlie Rides captures a child’s love for transportation while also affirming that the quality time shared between father and son is what means the most.
First sentence: This is Charlie and he loves to ride.......bikes with Dad when it's sunny outside, soapbox cars in a downhill race, a rocket ship to outer space,
Premise/plot: Charlie Rides: Planes, Trains, Bikes, & More is a board book about a father and son who enjoy spending time together riding. (The rocket ship to outerspace is an amusement park ride.) By the end of this one, readers learn what Charlie's favorite, favorite thing to ride is.
My thoughts: I really like this one. I'm not sure if there truly is an imbalance of representation between mothers in literature and fathers in literature, but, this one is certainly a good example of a father being there and being an important part of his family. It is also one of the funner transportation-themed books.

Charlie loves to ride everything! A bike, a soapbox car, a sled, a boat, a plane and more. His dad is riding everything with him. In fact, his dad’s shoulders are his favorite ride.
This toddler look at all the different forms of transportation is adorable. In many of the illustrations, other children are riding, too, so the reader can try to find which one is Charlie. I love that it is also about fathers and sons.

Charlie and his dad do some great bonding on things that go. I really like the variety of sustainable modes featured, especially the NYC Subway. While there is an airplane included, there are no cars or trucks (yay). Even the space ship is a carnival ride, which is very cute. Everyone is wearing helmets when they should be. I only wish the rhymes were a bit more consistent. There are at least two phrases that are left without an accompanying rhyme.
We are trying to encourage our son to learn how to ride a bike. I was hoping this book would help. It was a good book about transportation and traveling with his Daddy. But, definitely for a younger age than 5 and does not encourage courage for bike riding.
3 1/2 stars. Cute book about a little boy and his dad using different modes of transportation. Works well as a board book, with just one sentence per spread.
