From an artist whose work has appeared in more than 100 television commercials, films, and music videos, NARCISSA is Lance Tooks' beautifully drawn, compelling story of one woman's journey to self-discovery.
Narcissa, a talented and self-centered independent filmmaker, is collapsing under the strain of her critics--the "enlightened" people who are trying to get her to compromise her integrity. The stress is killing her--literally. Warned that if she tries to complete her current project she'll be dead in a week, Narcissa decides to escape the chaos that surrounds her--and fears the fears that threaten to overwhelm her--by traveling to Spain. As she encounters new people, places, and experiences, Narcissa gradually comes to a deeper understanding of who she is and what she is doing with her life.
Depicting Narcissa's journey with compassion and wit, Lance Tooks has created an episodic, thoroughly engrossing, exisential tale that will long resonate with readers.
Other than semi-infuriating bouncing around with plot architecture, I really enjoyed this book. It is very well conceived and has A LOT to say. There is a TON of emotion with heavy drama and tragedy that is orchestrated well. You won't get much better with characters either.
The art is wonderfully true to life buy often scant and simplistic (for my very high standards of course.).
What I found ironic about it is that she says that atheists never preach- but the book itself is atheist bible material! But it gives all sides stuff to think about even though it's heavy handed.
It has a great bold art style reminiscent of wood block art. The art is striking and simple with its use of black, white, and red. The story is a black woman tired by personal and professional struggles goes to Spain and falls in love. The images remind me a bit of the 1959 movie Black Orpheus.
