An instant #1 "New York Times" bestseller now in paperback, this astonishing program will reportedly help readers reverse the aging process, inside and out.
Eighty percent of the book reads like a 2:00 AM Paid Programming television spot, and the final twenty percent is what you realized you paid for from that television spot.
This strikes me as something of a shell game. For starters, I don’t like being promised extravagant things like shaving years off my age. At this point in my life I’d settle for a healthier diet. Further, I dislike the rapid-fire bombardment of chemistry, biology and medicine with little or no explanation of terms or their importance. That makes me feel like I’m being bamboozled. This feeling grows stronger in the chapters on supplements and topicals, which read like a QVC infomercial for Perricone’s own products. On the other hand, at least this is an honest shell game with some good information hidden here and there if you follow closely enough. I was fascinated by the section on the nutritional value of food, and some of the recipes in the back sounded good (though the overall diet program included many things that I don’t see putting into my mouth).
I read this book 13 years after publication and so some of the findings I guess are now out of date, although it’s interesting to note that he recommended cutting back on refined sugar and carbs even then! However, the further I read the more it felt like an extended advert for his products - both supplements and topicals. The recipes were quite good and the diet looked achievable but as I don’t eat meat, I couldn’t follow it to the letter. So, I took what I could from the book in terms of eating and will ignore the rest
I don't think you need to buy into a $300 a month skincare-and-supplement program to see a lot of the results Perricone "promises." Reading this book was, in itself, a good reminder that diet, exercise, managing stress and taking care of my skin are an important part of daily life, and that everyone should do his best (even if you can't afford the Perricone brand) taking care of the one body and mind you've been given.
I'm buying this book (currently I have it checked out from my library) because of the excellent quality of the recipes and because I think I'll need it to keep my list of recommended supplements in order.
Dr. Perricone lists 10 super foods we should include in our diet daily. #1 is the acai berry. Its also the #1 ingredient in this amazing super juice I've been drinking called MONAVIE. I love this stuff so much I became a distributor last month! It gives has given me tons of energy like you wouldnt believe. Helps with aches and pains (I ran my first 10k on Saturday) and its all natural! Ask me for details.
I'm kind of ambivalent about this one. On the one hand, if you follow the nutrition protocols, you ought to be immortal (or at least disease-free). On the other, you're expected to use Dr. Perricone's ointments, available mostly from him for around $90 or so. I'm thinking you could probably get equal results from Vitamin A, E, or C based ointments.
Some really great information about how the body ages and steps to prevent those changes, but some of the steps involve a lot of expensive products so this is not a book you can really just try. HOWEVER, I found that the recipes included in the book are really yummy and healthy and is worth checking out of the library to try.
Some of this you could definitely gloss over and ignore without any loss. There was some interesting information on different antioxidants, health foods, and inflammation (with some actual scientific basis). The book also included some recipes which I have yet to try.
The recipes in the back make it worth it, plus I bought it at the dollar store, he, he! I now make buckwheat hot cereal for breakfast occasionaly and have also made the Lentil and Turkey Sausage Soup, Salmon teriyaki, and barley as a side dish. I'd be happy to share if you'd like to borrow it!
I am reading from my bookshelves this summer. I am trying to get my diet under control so this was a no brainer. Mr. Perricone has done a lot of research. This is more of an encyclopedia than a prescription. I think I will keep it.
This book seems to have a lot of truth to it, as Perricone's assertions are also reflected in a lot of scientific research. He lost some of his credibility towards the end of the book for me, as he was trying to peddle his products. I could have done without that.
Nicholas Perricone, M.D. is known for his young living approach through life and body changing programs that will extend our lives. He is a healer for sure. I refer to this book often.
Informative and not as dry as I expected from reading other reviews... probably because I am obsessed with skin and longevity. Either way, I recommend it :)
