2 more issues and this is over! So, all the machines of Cylo destroyed. Except one. Freaking Darth Vader himself! Cylo shut off Vader with a press of a button. Now, can Aphra save him? Why does the next issue cover have a girl that look like a princess on it? Is that princess Padme? Will we go on a trip down memory lane in the mind of Anakin?
What I do feel about this last Darth Vader arc is that its story is all over the place. It is an incohesive piece that scatters across the space and the super star destroyer and the Executor. At one point I am even confused with where the scene is happening as Vader, Aphra and Cylo transfers from ship to ship.
I hope that the last two issues left would turn my disappointment to satisfaction. My hopes were very, very high when this series began but everything crumbled after Vader Down.
AHHHHHHHHHH! This is evil! THIS IS BLOODY EVIL! This must be the most evil of a cliff hanger of all time!
But let's be honest and not be stupid (I'm telling myself) Anne Vader ain't gonna die here, and definitely not at this moment. On the other hand someone had a lower ground and didn't jump lol.
Vader faces another one of Cylo's creations. This one wields a lightsaber. Well drawn but the dramatic tension is undercut because the character of Morit was never really established as much of a threat. And as with all of Vader's opponents, they underestimate the Force.
Vader has cornered Cylo on the almost-complete Executor. But with the chaos caused by the droids rescuing Doctor Aphra, Cylo still has a contingency plan up his sleeve.
Nothing really seems like a challenge for Vader in this arc. He mows through any resistance and minions that Cylo is throwing at him. Characters that were meant to be a threat to him, just really aren’t. I actually suspected through this whole series he was sort of allowing these characters to exist and really didn’t feel any threat. I did like the ending of the issue, however. An interesting twist that also adds to Vader’s personal history. Gillen has given us a couple of nice cliffhangers the last few issues.
Again, the most fun parts of this issue are the Aphra and the droids scenes. There is just such crisp dialogue (even if it’s in wookiee from Black Krrsantan) and darkly humorous moments that make these scenes memorable. I look forward to reading the Doctor Aphra series.
Larroca’s art is another high point. The imagery is on point this issue for sure - from great splash pages using the ship-building facility as a backdrop to the chaos of a firefight or the expression on Cylo’s face when he see’s another minion defeated by Vader. Great panels!
Another solid issue that’s bringing the elements of the plot together moving towards the end of the arc.
Wait, an off switch? I do not know what I think of this idea.
I guess? They've seeded it pretty well, I guess. And it fits into the "more machine = less human" trope that is so well-established in the original trilogy (see: pp. 1042-1044, I don't necessarily endorse the entire paper, but specifically the relationship between 'disfigurement' and 'inhumanity' is undeniable in Star Wars and I do agree that it's problematic).
But the idea that Cylo has an off-switch bugs me...

I felt the story was quite disjointed with its shifting POV and plot points. I had difficultly determining who was on what ship with the Cylo offensive which diminished my enjoyment.
The set-up for what looks like an amazing conclusion of this 25-issue comic spread is laid down hard in this one. Super excited to see how this all comes together and wraps up!
Some of the very best Star Wars you can get your hands on.
Gran remontada, excelente Aphra y un grandioso final con un cliffhanger alucinante e inesperado que sólo puede ser resuelto de una manera. Larroca aquí sobresale en el dibujo y la planificación.
It is actually pretty boring seeing Vader fight Morit yet again. And the far away perspective makes it difficult to tell what exactly Vader does when defeating him. I'm still not sure how I feel about Cylo being able to stop Vader momentarily just by turning off his suit. And it seems rather convenient that Krrsantan appears to help Aphra.

Cylo's secret reveal at the end was pretty tacky, to be completely honest. Vader seems too intelligent to leave such a glaring weakness. I haven't been very impressed with how this series is getting tied up so far.
