This is a lushly illustrated, passionate and in-depth introduction to elephants, their world, and the threats to their continued survival. THE ELEPHANT BOOK would make a fine resource for a middle school-aged student doing a science project or writing a book report--or simply wishing to learn more about these incredible animals.
The book is straightforward with the facts about elephant poaching, and doesn't try to obscure the ugliness of this enterprise, so I would probably recommend something that communicates the facts with less intensity to readers below that level, however.
48 pages of elephant photos and facts about elephants and the impact of poaching on the elephant population. I enjoyed learning more about these magnificent creatures and agree with the previous review that this book is good for middle-school age kids.
The book was written and produced in an effort to save elephants from extinction through education and awareness. Therefore, it’s unfortunate a stronger call to action wasn’t included. In small print, that’s easy to miss, there is a paragraph on the last page that includes a website. At least that’s something.
Beautiful and moving. There are less elephants alive today than when this book was published at the end of the 1980s. Humanity will be judged by the fate of these miraculous creatures.
