Emma Darcy is the pseudonym created by the married writing team of Wendy (1940-2020) and Frank Brennan (1936-1995). Their life journey has taken as many twists and turns as the characters in their stories, whose international popularity has resulted in over sixty-million book sales. With more than a hundred titles, Emma Darcy appeared regularly on the Waldenbooks bestseller lists in the U.S.A. and in the Nielson BookScan Top 100 chart in the U.K.

Wendy was born 28 November 1940 in Australia. Her sister was the novelist Maureen Mary (Miranda Lee). Her father was a country school teacher and brilliant sportsman. Her mother was a talented dressmaker. She obtained an Honours degree in Latin and initially worked as a high school English/French teacher. She married Frank Brennan, an Australian businessman born in 1936. She changed careers to computer programming before marriage and motherhood settled her into a community life. She was reputedly the first woman computer programmer in the southern hemisphere.

As voracious readers, the step to writing their own books seemed a natural progression and the challenge of creating exciting stories was soon highly addictive. They were published since 1983. In 1993, for the Emma Darcy pseudonym's 10th anniversary, they created the "Emma Darcy Award Contest" to encourage authors to finish their manuscripts. After the death of Frank Brennan in 1995, Wendy wrotes books on her own. She lived in a beachside property on the central coast of New South Wales, and liked to travel extensively to research settings and increase her experience of places and people.

Wendy Brennan passed away on December 21, 2020. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and sister, writer Miranda Lee.

This book was a tsunami of tackiness for me.

The heroine is already engaged to OM when the hero ruthlessly sets out to pursue her. Six chapters in, she remains an engaged woman about to marry in two weeks. The hero does not give a damn because in his not-so-humble opinion, her fiance is a tame lapdog. What she supposedly needs is a wild wolf to mate with. Excuse me while I go throw up.

The heroine's parents and brother are all pushing her to break things off with her fiance because he is not of their stratospheric social and financial class, which must automatically mean he is a golddigging hall of famer. They have no proof of this. The worst thing they can say about him is that he has too much charm and therefore automatically suss. It is insulting both to the fiance and to their own daughter, implying that she, in her own right, doesn't have enough to attract a man, it must be her millions that her fiance is after.

Which brings me to the execrable heroine of THIS piece. I cannot stand the "Poor Little Rich Girls" who can criticize their father's strict work ethic, wealthy, exclusive lifestyle, and high expectations, but are still quite content to reap all the benefits of it, including the best education, wardrobe, social scene, exclusive real estate ,and nepotism-appointed cushy jobs. YUCK! And this heroine was the epitome of all that hypocrisy. Let's face it, if she really wanted people to like her for herself, why not simply emancipate herself financially from her parents and go try to earn a career and a circle of friends all on her own merits without use of the family name or connections. Or, if she was going to prove to her parents that she is committed to her fiance and it has nothing to do with money, why not sign away her own rights to the company shares and to any inheritance instead of making her fiance sign a prenup? RIGHT!!! NEVER GONNA HAPPEN!!!

We are meant as the reader to sympathize with the heroine when her fiance balks at signing a prenuptial agreement with her and thus supposedly prove his perfidy and justify her brutal dumpage of him. I didn't feel that way at all. I actually felt sorry for him to be in such a humiliating position two weeks before the wedding, with his fiancee, the woman who is supposed to love him unconditionally, agree under pressure of her parents, who have refused to accept him and have treated him like dirt both publicly and privately, that he needs to give this as a guarantee of what they perceive as being a short-term marriage.

The author conveniently glosses over the fact that the heroine ruthlessly manipulated the OM into marriage in the first place, not because she loved him, but because he was a convenient sperm donor. She was thirty years old and felt the biological clock ticking loudly in her eardrums and that is the only reason she was pushing for marriage. Then, when she dumped him, she simply replaced him with the wealthy, parent-approved "hero" of this piece, without bothering to re-arrange the original wedding and honeymoon plans. After having known him for the length of a day. WHO DOES THAT??????

The final rotten cherry on top of the wormy cake: The heroine miscarries and the hero tries to comfort her by telling her they can go to Africa to an orphanage he is sponsoring there and have her pick of a fresh, healthy baby. OH MY GOD. This book was published in 2007. How could the author be so insensitive as to paint this picture of complete entitlement and privilege of this wealthy white couple who supposedly can swoop in and "rescue" a black baby from a poor country as easily as going to a store and picking the cutest toy. It BOGGLES my mind.

The book ends with the couple conceiving another baby that she is able to carry to term and their respective families gathering to celebrate the joy at having all their scheming, manipulations, and convenient arrangements, resulting in the spoiled, entitled heir who is going to inhabit some future Harlequin romance and abuse some other heroine.

Emma Darcy has been able to write some of the sweetest most satisfying stories in Harlequinlandia (Pattern of Deceit, Dark Heritage as well as the type of stories where I feel the urgent need to bleach my eyes after enduring it (The Italian's Stolen Bride, Tangle of Torment). I'm afraid The Billionaire's Scandalous Marriage falls in the latter category for me :(

"The Billionaire's Scandalous Marriage" is the story of Charlotte and Damien.

Our heroine is a 30 year old heiress about to marry her fiancé- someone her family believes is a gold digger. For New Years celebration, she attends a yacht party, where is meets the enigmatic hero- and sparks fly. The sexual tension is off the roof, but she sticks to her fiancé- that is until her father falls sick. The hero takes charge, and circumstances of event lead to the breakup of her engagement. She soon finds herself whirled into a marriage with the hero, and how they navigate from sex to love forms the story.

The chemistry between the leads is off the charts. The heroine is blind, the hero was absolutely smitten. The second half felt rushed, otherwise this could have been an excellent read.

The h is a 30-year old ‘poor little rich girl’. She lives with the OM and she is about to be married to that OM when she meets the H. Luckily for the H, she calls off the marriage because the OM doesn’t want to sign a prenup and she thinks he is after her family’s money.

Anyway, the h would have gone ahead with her marriage even after meeting the H and knowing he is interested in her, so I don’t believe in her love for the H.

And what I especially didn’t like, was that she wasn’t a virgin and moreover, that she lived together with that other guy. Quite modern and realistic, but I don’t read a HP for reality. That’s what newspapers are for.

I had all sorts of mixed feelings reading this book. I can't say I really liked the characters. Well, actually, I mostly didn't like Charlotte. Damien was okay. I kind of liked him and his passion, his being caring, and even his determination, although also scary. But it was clear he felt for Charlotte something special, shared with her a special bond he was ready to admit, while she wasn't eve capable of realize. Charlotte was too cold for my likes. And more than half of the book was rather cold too. I couldn't feel any special emotion. I kept waiting but the magic just wouldn't come, until almost the end when I even wept. It was a relief, I didn't really want to rate this book only 2 stars. The last 15% of the book saved the whole thing. And added that third star I desperately needed.

This was not that good for me.

Damien instantly likes Charlotte but she’s engaged. Everyone in her family hates the fiancee and thinks he’s after her for money.

When this is shown to be true, Damien convinces Charlotte to marry him at her original wedding. 🫤

I liked their initial attraction and banter but I needed wayyy more when they actually get together. They don’t marry until almost 70% into the book and they barely know each other. Damien knew she was his soulmate right away but Charlotte is bemoaning wanting love.. I think the beginning should’ve been shorter so we could’ve seen more of their marriage and learning about each other.

This book is a prequel to "The Billionaire's Captive Bride" I unfortunately read it before this one. I like Charlotte's story writing better even though it was a bit lacking in the romance department. This book focused more on sexual desires than romance and I'm not sure if I like that in a romance book.

Weak sexual chemistry, no angst. Boring book DNF.

When the H(32-34) firsts sees the h (30)his first thoughts are how compatible they are financially, and how suitable she would suit his needs for a wife, not how breathless he is and drawn to her. Where is the chemistry? Anyway, he starts going for her because she seems perfect for him.

And the h is an aging woman who’s desperate to have a baby….I liked how strong she seemed to be.

Emma Darcy is a prolific writer. No shortage of intelligent banter between the hero and heroine. But I did not FEEL the sexual chemistey between Damien and Charlotte.

And being a South African, I take umbrage at Darcy's description of Africa, through her heroine , when Charlotte Ramseycommented:
"I have always thought of Africa
as a scary, violent place, best avoided."

Let me qualify this by highlighting: I do believe every character's view ( in any fiction novel) is an indirect reflection of the soul of the author.

So ... Is Africa the ONLY violent country in the world? Assault and Sexual Assault is almost 50% higher in Emma Darcy's Australia than in the USA, the 3rd most populous nation in the world!

Yes, crime in Africa is high, but Australia is not WITHOUT violent, heinous crimes!

Back to my review ... I loved the free flowing sharp wit of the heroine Charlotte Ramsey. Kudos to Darcy, she a flowing lexicon and flair for words.
I also appreaciated heroine Charlotte's capacity to demonstrate immediate contrition.

And here are 2 *Spoiler Alerts*
When she discovered she was pregnant after 2 months of marriage, she was elated, and Charlotte's dishonest response to Damien's lack of enthusiasm was: "Well I married you to get pregnant..."
I liked that she immediately apologised and confessed that she was enjoying the marriage and she did not view him as just the sperm doner.

*Spoiler Alert Number 2*
When she miscarried...she lashed out at Damien, with all the tumultuous emotial grief she was consumed with by saying: "You never really wanted this baby as much as I did..." anu turned her back to him... physically
and emotionally shutting him out.

This is where Damien proved to her, he wanted her for the long haul. He reached out to her, offering comforting words, demonstrating his own grief and when Charlotte heard the raw pain in his voice and saw the anguish in his eyes...she knew he was hurting for the pain she was engulfed with.
Immediately she apologized for shutting him out and reached out to make amends.

I gave this story 2 Stars. Not Darcy's best romance in my opinion. The hero ... lacked the charisma, appeal and fireworks, I enjoy in a romance.

I give Damien Wynter 8/10 for strategy, objective and implementation.

He understands the power, destructive and constructive emotions have in being the driving force in relationships. He adequately grasps the single minded insight required for a relationship to succeed; and how to identify and deflect conflict...but he did not ignite that exlosive, earth shattering chemisty that a romance novel requires.

So all in all ... it was an 'ok' romance, to fill a few empty hours, but in my view, NOT a novel of riveting, bursting testosterone, sexual chemistry, and romance as it should have been.

And ... be nice to Africa, Emma Darcy 👆

Oh, how I enjoyed this story! Charlotte is about to get married to a man not fit for her (her family doesn't approve and that only makes her cling to him tighter) , because she wants a family and a child. There's not much time left before the marriage actually happens when Damien appears into her life. He's instantly besotted with her so he does everything in his power to make her his - after all, it's all fair in love and war.

OK hear me out. The premise here is switching out the groom 2 weeks before a wedding is less embarrassing than just cancelling the wedding. It is not! It's super weird! People are going to think you're rebounding hardcore!

Harlequin Presents males are no longer physically abusive but this one is sure manipulative and seems to be love bombing....the flags are different but still red!

Great

Loved this love story in a firm believer in fighting for what you want and believing in your instincts, the first words my husband ever said to me were" I'm going to marry you " and that's exactly what happened . The characters were strong and passionate a must read !!

Charlotte is engaged to marry Mark, even though everyone in her family thinks he's a fortune-hunter. When they're proved right, Charlotte is both heartbroken and humiliated - until her brother's friend Damien offers to marry her to spare her from the negative publicity.

I found the premise of this utterly ludicrous. Marrying someone to keep your pride intact, really? I can't imagine that a break-up, even a high-profile one, would hurt a heiress' image too badly. Maybe it's different in Australia, but over here in England, our aristocracy and gentry are always in the papers for dumping, getting dumped, cheating or being cheated on. Nobody gives a toss - it's what's expected. I would have understood Charlotte better if she said she wanted to marry Damien so she didn't have to be alone, or because she wanted hot sex, or even if she was more clear that it was about the stability of family and children.

Damien was a little too Machiavellian for my tastes, but he was basically a kind man - very welcome after several books with brooding, mean heroes. I found the relationship between him and Charlotte a bit cold though. Just too businesslike for me.

That said, I really did enjoy the ending. After Charlotte was rushed into hospital, I started to feel a genuine love between the two of them.

The ending doesn't totally make up for the first two thirds of the book, but it was nice to end on a high note. 2.5 - 3 stars.

Have to agree that despite the sexual heat between these two, the relationship is very cold. Damien decides that she's the one and manipulates and challenges her into doubting her fiance (who turns out to be an ass anyway) and then marrying him. I could not forgive his "ends justifies the means" attitude - even if she did eventually find happiness with him. Damien was rather insensitive overall, caring little for how Charlotte feels, so long as he gets what he wants. Granted, Charlotte is every bit as cold as Damien, but at least we get insight into her reasons and we know that its a dream of wanting to love and be love that causes her to act as she does.

Somehow I felt like this wasn't much of a romance (until the last chapter). It rather felt like two people in a power struggle to get what they want and neither one really wins.

A fairly different HP. Hero sees heroine and immediately sets out to get her even though she is engaged to another man. Hero is not an ass just sure that the heroine is his soul mate. We have POV from both H and h so we see him all along chasing her as hard as he can. Pretty well written, plot made sense and flowed nicely. There wasn't a big breakup just before the end which as different and another odd thing:

A really great book. I love how Damien was committed to her from the moment he met her. I also love how you kept the main characters in the story together and monogamous throughout the whole book. It is a very hard thing to pull off because most authors don't know how to do it but you did it beautifully. This was the first book I ever read from you and I will definitely be reading more of your books and will be adding you to my list of favorites if the rest of your books are as compelling as this one. Congrats on a job well done. Gina

Una miscela esplosiva.
Damien Winter è affascinante, arrogante e molto presuntuoso.

I really enjoyed this story. Although it seems a little bit unrealistic that the hero knows straight away the heroine is the woman of his life, I loved to see how the hero trying his best to pursue the heroine. I also liked being able to see some of the hero's POV and there is no doubt that he loves the heroine very much. The heroine also seemed intelligent and mature enough in her actions and speech. And their HEA was believable and well deserved at the end.

This book was...odd. It's an older Harlequin, and it definitely reads like an older Harlequin, with more plot than what is seen in the books now. However, I'm not quite sure I believe entirely in the HEA. The h and H got what they wanted, but still. It wasn't a bad book, by any means. I definitely could not put it down, but that could have more to do with Emma Darcy's writing style than anything else.

3.5 Stars!

Lots of heat between these two...only problem is she is engaged and about to be married to a man who doesn't heat her up like Damian does...oh and that marriage is about 2 weeks away. Damian recognizes her as his soul mate and nothing is going to stop him from having her for his own. A short but fun read.

Enjoyable read but a little farfetched storyline to my liking. While Damien and Charlotte were much better suited than her and Mark she jumped from one fiance to another without batting an eye. Liked Damien's patience no matter how trying Charlotte was.
