Mimi and Ky #1

Mimi and Ky: The Beginning

Rate this book
"From the corner of a neighboring building, a pair of not-quite-human eyes watched her intently in the morning half-light. Mimi suddenly felt strange, off-balance. The sidewalk rose up toward her sideways; she would have screamed, but she couldn't find her voice. The world turned gray, static-y, electric.

For such a light figure, she hit the ground with a surprising thud.

The not-quite-human eyes opened wide and then turned surprisingly quickly into the eyes of a crow that flew to a nearby rooftop. From there he could get a good view of the street, the driver running to help Mimi, the ambulance, the lights, the end of the warm LA night."

Mimi's sudden illness brings her an unexpected companion. When that companion turns out to be a shapeshifter who needs Mimi's help to fight greed and corruption in her elite social circle, Mimi's life plunges into a desperate attempt to stop her (ex) boyfriend from seizing control of many of the world's financial resources.

A great book for anyone who loves a fast-paced adventure or for anyone who has always suspected that their dog has an alter ego as a superhero.

Yves Corbiere

Yves Corbiere only became captivated by superheroes as an adult. As a child she preferred horses. “Mimi and Ky: The Beginning” is her debut novel.
Yves suffers from chronic Lyme disease which she was diagnosed with 8 years ago when she woke up screaming because she couldn't feel or move her right leg. She has now mostly recovered her health due to the hard work and dedication of many healthcare practitioners in a variety of disciplines including acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage, yoga, and allopathic medicine (an amazing MD).

Lyme sufferers, and many others, will recognize much of what Mimi encounters in “Mimi and Ky: The Beginning” including having a career and expectations knocked off course by sudden illness and having an illness that no one else can see but that controls her every move. "I've spoken to so many people who have a variety of illnesses but many of the same struggles. I wanted to write a version of our story that is authentic but in the context of a fast-paced adventure because I have found unbridled fun to be one of the most important things in my healing process! Plus, when you're sick, your dog really is a superhero. That's not fiction."

Yves grew up in Guilford, Connecticut, a coastal New England town with a passion for soccer, sailing and high school orchestral music. She now lives in Fayetteville, WV which she finds to be a hotbed of creativity and support for creativity. “Living here, I feel like I have a glimpse of what it was like to live in Paris in the early 1900's, except that Fayetteville only has 3,000 people! Writers, musicians, artists, political activists and athletes seem to be magnetically attracted to this small town. It's the perfect place to write a novel.”

For all you francophiles and French speakers who are wondering, Yves got the spelling of her name from Jacques Cousteau. She was an "Eve" until at age 4 she saw a documentary featuring Jacques "Yves" Cousteau and insisted on changing the spelling. She doesn't remember the incident.

New take on an old myth

I thought I had Ky figured out at the beginning but the author created a whole new world. the story held my interest and the characters made me want to read more about them. I hope there are more books about them or will be.

Fun, quick read. Enjoyed the main characters growth as a person through the book. She goes from being a spoiled star to someone facing a serious medical condition that will change her life forever. The story line of the shape shifter and what is coming for the future was entertaining and kept you rooting for a happy ending. I enjoyed reading this and the ending of the book was left open so perhaps this will have another book coming? If so I'll look forward to reading it. I won this book in a goodreads giveaway, thank you.
