When the greatest minds in the galaxy can’t solve a problem through logic and reason, they call Carrie Hatchett.
Carrie and her reluctant sidekick, Dave, have succeeded in driving the evil mechanical aliens, the placktoids, to their only remaining hiding place—the past. But the danger isn’t over. The Transgalactic Council suspect the placktoids are trying to change the course of history and re-emerge as rulers of the galaxy.
Even attacks from her psychotic cat can’t prepare Carrie or Dave for the challenges they face when they travel back in time to the placktoid planet: searing temperatures, a barren landscape and primitive robots with OCD. And waiting in the wings is the placktoid High Commander, whose 3D printing ability is lethal.
Innocently optimistic Carrie needs to recognise what’s staring her in the face if she’s to defeat the placktoids and avoid being trapped in the past forever.

J.J. Green is a British-Australian science fiction author with a lifelong love of distant landscapes, intriguing cultures and fascinating places. She was born within the sound of the bells of Mary-le-Bow church in Cheapside, London, making her a bona fide Cockney, and she lived in Australia, Laos and Taiwan before returning to the UK to settle down in Cambridge.

Green’s novels weave science-based speculation with richly personal stories. Her works explore themes of environmental degradation, political conflict, mythical resonance, human resilience, and the ethics of technology and expansion. Her characters—often strong women—navigate future worlds grounded in both scientific plausibility and mythic imagination.

Not so much of a gigglefest as the previous three books but very enjoyable nonetheless. Carrie & Dave - who is now an officer in his own right - transported back in time to address the placktoid problem at its roots. There are, of course, the usual pitfalls and setbacks but with the help of an unusual and unexpected ally they muddle through unscathed and more or less intact. Their return to the present is not without a few surprises of its own, especially for Carrie. Even Toodles-the-cat has warmed up to her! I guess it's true what people say: don't mess with the timeline.

My thanks, once again, to Jenny Green for the British spellings & interpretations. It might sound petty but they mean a lot! Now for Book 5.

Excellent

The only thing I am sorry about in having finished this book is that I have to wait for the next in the series. The story move's at a great pace, the characters I love and I felt involved with them from the the start of the series. I will definitely read more by this lady.

Each one better

I am finding that each installment is better than the last, though I do feel like recognize plot points from other works. This one earned 4 stars, up from 3 on the last two.

It keeps on being fun!

Great adventure! I like the situations Carrie and Dave keep getting into. I hope the next books brings back the same characters. I’ve grown to really like them. But the cat. Friendly? This really is fiction!

Carrie and Dave get sent to the past to try to stop the power grab by the Placktoids.

I love the concept of office equipment being the aggressive baddies of the series.

But not all robots are bad.
