Not that I didn’t enjoy the book—because honestly, I loved it. But the beginning really annoyed me. The heroine was stuck with her lousy, useless fiancé, and the hero had to hold back instead of chasing her, simply because she was engaged. Since he’s a marshal, he couldn’t just pursue her openly. That part dragged for me. Thankfully, once the hero finally comes to his senses and realizes the heroine is the only one for him, the story takes a major turn for the better. From that point on, I absolutely loved their stupid, cute, never-ending bickering. There was a big glitch, though—and that’s the reason I downgraded a star from what would otherwise be a solid 4-star book. The hero sleeps with his usual OW friend even after meeting the heroine and feeling attracted to her. I get that the heroine was engaged, traveling with her fiancé, and clearly dismissed the hero, but I personally prefer my heroes loyal from first sight. That said, once the hero realizes he can’t be happy with anyone but the heroine, he goes all in—and I loved that chase. The book truly kickstarts when the hero and heroine begin their journey to find the killers of the hero’s father and search for the heroine’s missing sister. Their constant arguing and bickering during this part was a highlight. They’re both ridiculous—but in the cutest way. I really love how this author writes her heroes. And yes, the heroine was annoying and way too stubborn at times. There were moments when I genuinely wondered how the hero managed to put up with all her stupidity. She tested my patience more than once—but the story moves on, and thankfully it doesn’t completely derail the book. The latter half of the book was strong, engaging, and thoroughly enjoyable.
I did not care for this book. Abigail was annoying. JUST SIT DOWN WOMAN and stop making things 10x harder than they need to be. Jeremiah is a way better man than I would be. I would have left her. Rape scenes are not my cup of tea and the men Jeremiah is chasing have some brutal scenes especially if you take the time to think about what that would have been like for the women and men that crossed their path. Jeremiah was alright. I just couldn't believe he would go through all the trouble Abigail was causing. I honestly liked her sister's story more with the man at the inn. I wish there was a book with their life after getting together.
