Scary violence made this the only Barefoot Books title I have ever disliked. I'm all for shiny knights slaying evil dragons, but it's completely developmentally inappropriate to draw a three-year-old into a conflict between the starving foxes trying to feed their babies and the three roommates who sometimes argue over chores but always stick together.

Parents should beware that though it's billed as first stories for reading aloud for ages five and under, the illustrations required all of this adult's discrimination skills to interpret. We were also frustrated by the frequent use of obscure vocabulary.

My almost-four-year-old politely tolerated one of the stories. I didn't read him the rest. My six-and-a-half-year-old folktale fan browsed through it but didn't find the new take on old content, or the new content, that would have been necessary to pull him in.

Storytime is a sweet collection of classic tales including The Three Pigs, Stone Soup, and The Gingerbread Man. The retellings by Stella Blackstone are comfortable but updated and definitely draw some chuckles. The art is funky and eye-catching. My two year old and I read one together, tonight. She loved it! Enjoy this and other Barefoot Books at my website

A richly illustrated collection of classic tales. Amelia's favorites were the three little bears and the gingerbread man. Sometimes I wish they were a little more economical in the telling (too many words!)

A book full of old fairy tales from when I was a child. One could easily read these stories to the students and discuss the morals. I would then have the students write their own fairy tale.
