I'm a tough, tough critic of craft books and I own quite a few. With that said, I really liked Canvas Remix. I've yet to do any projects from the book, but I can see a couple in my future. So why a mere 3 stars for a book I really liked? There are a couple of things that were dramatically lacking in this book.
First the resource list for the supplies used was sorely lacking. I realize that including a resource list is problematic, in that the item may not be available from the source listed forever, but there are a number of items used in the projects contained here that I really would have liked a resource for.
Second, it's important to me that the author walk the reader through a process that will give VERY similar results to those of the artist/author. This artist's pieces are very layered and although there is a description of many of the methods used to develope this layered look early in the book, the projects area of the book does little to include these multilayered effects to the degree that the artist's own work does.
These two shortcomings loses the book a full star in my mind. With all that said, if you love to play with paint and would like to have a variety of projects to incorporate canvas and paint into, this work my be well worth buying.
What a fun, bright and colorful book with delightful ideas for transforming a blank canvas into a variety of imaginative, unconventional things: from paintings and jewelry to bags and ornaments. Burke's descriptions of what has influenced her in turn inspire readers to push their own boundaries and create personalised and unique things for everyday use.
The instructions are very easy to follow, photos are used to illustrate every step in the process. But you'll need some basic knowledge of using a sewing machine and jewelry making (example, attaching jump rings) to get the most out of the book as it does not teach you these things.
This is a great book for beginners who wish to experiment with canvas and mixed media; it introduces various techniques and encourages you to redefine traditional concepts to produce one-of-a-kind creations.
