I'm afraid this book is much like the Curate's egg - good in parts. The trouble with a collection of short stories by different authors is that not all the stories will appeal to every reader. Having just read all the Barbara Pym novels where my attention was held by every word she wrote, this book was a disappointment to me. I enjoyed the stories by Georgina Hammick, Penelope Lively, and Deborah Maggoch. My favourite story was by Ruth Rendell.
The other stories were abandoned sooner or later. The one I disliked most and could not continue reading after the first page was by Jane Gardam. In future, I shall stick to short story collections by one writer, particularly by a writer I already like.
