This was another hot little story by this author. Very borderline dub/con with Ryan's whole 'I'm taking you because I know you want it', which was fine with me because I was in suspending reality mode.

Also a little odd how Ryan and Skylar are referred to as the 'older boy' and 'younger boy' when they're six months apart.

Still fun and I read it for the sex so I'm happy.

I'd say a 3.25, maybe even 3.5. It was short but simultaneously sweet and hot - the quibbles lay in overuse of "the older boy/younger boy" terminology; there's six months between them, it ain't a May to December freakin' romance! The other was that I did get a minor jolt out of story regarding condom use or lack thereof: after hearing so explicitly about the copious girl loving I'd of at least liked to hear some nonsensical guff about true love blah at the least, rather than it not even being mentioned. (You know the thing, how the hero always knew he'd be with his true love one day so took precautions, but we can be careful if you really want. . . ) However these teeny issues aside it was an enjoyable short story and well worth a smutastic read.

This was a decent read, not as hot as I expected but definitely still steamy. I love the friends-to-lovers trope, especially with the jock vs nerd component added in. It turned slightly dub-con when Ryan confronted Skylar since he was all now-that-I-know-you-want-me-I'm-gonna-take-what-we-both-want. I think the implication was that Skylar was so worried bout losing their friendship that he would be hesitant to take that next step, but that wasn't really consistent with the character we had scene. Once he found out that Ryan felt the same way about him, he totally would have gone for it.

So I didn't mind the dub-con component, but it wasn't really necessary. And if they were gonna go that route, they should have gone full-throttle. Once penetration time came Ryan punked out and was all tell-me-you-want-this-or-I'll-stop. And despite Skylar's hard dildo masturbation scene, there wasn't any of the yummy dirty talk that I was expecting once they finally fucked. So an alright little interlude. But I'm gonna check out some of her other, darker works of the full experience!

I’ve read many books by this author. Since they are Yaoi, there’s always a level of coercion and hot sex. It’s the ‘Yes, yes! No, no!’ dichotomy. Dub-con to the max. Well, this story went too far for me. I made it through about seventy-five percent of the book until Ryan overheard Skyler’s desires. From that point Ryan pushes and pushes Skyler to give in. It’s clear Skyler is scared, not sure he wants to, and is afraid if he doesn’t he’ll get hurt. This for me, is where Ryan moves into being a rapist, even when he asks Skyler at the very last second, if it’s okay. Seriously, if Skyler is scared, is he going to say no? Because it was clear Ryan was not going to take no for an answer. Before they did the deed, I closed the book. I thought I’d pick it up again at a later point, but the revulsion I feel for what was happening in the story keeps me from picking it up again. I just can’t do it. Some people will likely say, “It’s Yaoi, what did you expect?” I read Yaoi, I like it. But not this kind of Yaoi. So, this is a DNF for me and I give this book, 1 Star. Yes, I feel I can rate it one star because I made it seventy-five percent of the way through. And I’m not even reviewing the grammar errors.

WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED

This isn't one of my Amelita Rae favourites. I know erotica isn't meant to be plot or even romance-driven, but usually even with her shorts you'll find a touch of either or both, just enough to add spice to what would otherwise be bland, monotonous porn, and of course, packaged neatly in excellent writing. That isn't the case with this one.

Midway into the climax of the story, the writing quality, the plot, and the romance all yeeted themselves out the window, at the same time Ryan made his way inside Skyler's room. Which is disappointing because it actually had a pretty decent start. From there, things just went from sweet and touching to weird and creepy so fast, it almost feels like the two vastly contrasting halves were written by two different people, and the second half did not feel like Amelita Rae's at all. It got so bad, in fact, that it felt like the story devolved into one of those porn-without-plot fanfictions based off of a badly transcripted sexual role-play chat between two people who just wanted desperately to get off on a trashy dub-con fantasy involving a domineering BFF. (I imagine if they stayed honest to that concept instead of trying so hard to sell this with a half-assed attempt at a plot, it might have even landed better.) What's the point of carefully establishing their close friendship and Skyler's deep feelings for Ryan in the first half, only to drop it entirely in the second half like it never mattered to begin with? Suddenly caring, gentle-giant Ryan is a psychopathic sex maniac and trusting love-sick Skyler who dreams of nothing but having sex with Ryan is afraid of him doing it? Why the sudden 180-degree personality shift? Why did it suddenly switch from romance to horror? I don't get it. Did Amelita Rae write the first half a long time ago then just pick up the second half years later without bothering to remember what she had written because to hell with continuity? It's like living up to the title of this story was more important than the actual story, that it didn't matter if the events made zero sense. Sure, I could expect a brainless, nonsensical "yaoi" story like this from most other writers, but certainly not from Amelita Rae.

(Another thing that made me doubt this is how it's teeming with typos and errors. That's almost unheard of in an Amelita Rae. Her stories are almost always impeccably copy edited and proofread. This was appalling in its sloppiness compared to her usual standards.)

It's a real shame because Friends to Lovers is a trope that's hard to get wrong and this was checking all the boxes, right on track towards a great story, but then, BOOM. It suddenly went off the rails so violently and ended up one heck of cringe-worthy trainwreck.

Good camaraderie and friendship…the sleepovers, the burritos, the video games…

Skyler has fond memories of them growing up together, boys becoming men…realizing it wasn’t a one-way street. Not. Ever.

Cute illustrations. Beautiful story. Sweet. Tender. And very hot.

This was one of the first m/m stories I read, the first time I read it, I was fascinated, it's super hot, super yes, please do, and there's really nothing bad I can say, romantic and sexy, I love their relationship. BUT the next few times I read it, the best friend seemed like a selfish bastard, I didn't want him to go out with anyone (by the way he made him feel bad, because the idiot didn't even dare to do anything) and kept everyone away from the other character, but he went and fucked anyone he wanted? and by the way he told the other one, and I don't know if it's more shady that he will look for them that look like him physically, that's something that will always be a thorn that will prick me every time I read it.

This was so cute! Was recommended this for codependent best friends to lovers and it was almost perfect. But it definitely also had parts that were downright discomforting esp since it talked about them as kids. im guessing all of Amelita's books have some kind of icks with any story.

Sky and Ryan were cute. It's very short, barely 50 pages but they pack a punch both in angst, friendship and smut.
