Core Curricular Tie: 4th Grade Social Studies/History/Chronological Thinking
Explanation: The comic book format of this book will be particularly appealing to intermediate grade elementary students. The text breaks down the journey of Lewis and Clark into distinct timeline segments. Having multiple copies of the book available would allow for assigning groups of students to each portion of the journey. All groups could be given the task of researching and answering who, what, where, when, why and how questions regarding the events in each section. After answering the research question, the groups could be reassembled to present the story in chronological order by sharing the facts they uncovered.
Rationale: The text is presented in comic book format with highly engaging illustrations and details like maps and timelines. The book presents additional facts about the journeys, a glossary, index, and a list of additional books and online resources that would provide opportunities for enrichment and differentiation.
Scholastic says this is for grades 3-7, but I think younger grades would enjoy it too. I think the format is appealing to young readers, so they will learn about history and the explorers while enjoying it. I would highly recommend for an elementary library. I think this could be used as an introduction to Lewis & Clark and/or as a supplemental source for research.
I purchased this book as part of an Explorers set for our elementary school library. The graphic novel format is appealing. It tells the story of the explorers in an engaging way that is perfect for elementary-aged students. A welcome addition to our school library.
