Best known for her satirical depictions of the manners and mores of New York society, Edith Wharton shows her mastery of a far different milieu in this classic story of a farmer who is trapped in a loveless marriage to a tyrannical wife. A simplified retelling by Susan Kingsley.

1. Oxford, level 3
2. 11/18=90 mins.
3. Ethan Frome, accident, past, wife, horse, sleigh, young
4. a: "He's been like that since his bad accident, nearly twenty-four years ago."
b: Ethan Frome looked like a dead man because of a bad accident. However, I do not know what kind of accident happened to him, so I have to read all because I want to know about the accident.
5. This story was difficult to understand for me because there was many people's names. It made me confused, so I read same sentences again and again. This story was moved by a storyteller. He talked about Ethan's past. He talked many occurrences in short time. I have not finished reading this book, but I think I will take a long time to read all.

I read this book to page 27.

2. 1/14 80min

3. poor, hourse, whining voice, cusin, rich, died, money

4. Silver's medicine company had seemed successful, and he had lived like a rich man. But when he died, his wife and daughter had a terrible surprise. They discovered that he had borrowed thousands of dollars which he could not pay back.
It is very difficult for them to pay back. However husband shouldn't leave debt. I hope my family don't do like this.

5. They are living difficult situation. I thought a lot through this book. I have to express my parent's appreciation. I must help my family after getting a job.

I usually tend to avoid books that culminate in a very, very depressing ending.. But I loved this, mainly because of the main character's hopefulness. A quick, but emotional/impacting read.

Silný příběh. Příšerné ilustrace.
I když je fakt, že kdyby se Ethan místo vymýšlení podivných překombinovaných konstrukcí prostě pochlapil, mohlo to skončit líp.

The way they are now, there's not much difference between the Fromes up at the farm and the Fromes down in their graves- except that down there they're all silent.

It's a good story if you don't mind some moments of ridiculousness happening throughout the book, especially in the affair and the way love expressed between Ethan and Mattie, that I don't know if because the story was retold in a shorten way that it almost lost all the intentions the original author had given it, or maybe because the story truly has some kind of ridicule. The ending is shocking and a little bit creepy. It's depressing, but up to a point that I didn't quite sure if I understood it right that I had to check with wikipedia about the plot after finish reading. However, in terms of portraying lives in poverty, how it turns people into something negative, and how tragic it was to fall in love with a woman other than your wife but couldn't do anything to be happy with her forever, the book kinda nailed it.

2. 10/20=150min
3. Ethan Zeena Mattie love triangle suicide despair
4. He was like the land around him.
Ethan was very quiet man, so this sentence said he was like the land, but I think it is a strange expression.
5. Ethan and Zeena are married couple, and Zeena's character is quiet and don't smile so much. But Mattie who is relative of Zeena is lovely and smile a lot. So Ethan started to love Mattie. It means, a love triangle! Their situation was so bad and poor. I thought this story has no hope. There is only despair. I didn't know Good Reads has a dark serious story like this....

Discussion questions;
1. Which is better rich or poor for your life?
Of course, rich is the best, but I think with families, friends, and happiness, poor is good.
People should help each other.

2. Do you have a goog relation to your cousin?
Yes! We're very good. We talk everything when we meet, but we often don't meet. We meet third in a year.

A very symbolic read that was necessary when I was in college. The love of two that was not supposed to happen and the acceptance, if not a happy acceptance, in the end. Worth reading to gain a better perspective upon human motives and love. Not usually something I would enjoy, but it surprised me.

Poor Ethan! What a life he has! He had to take care of his father, mother, his wife, and then his servant, who once he was in love with.
