Cypress Landing #2

Unexpected Daughter

Rate this book
Returning to Cypress Landing brings back the best— and worst—moments of Cade Wheeler's life. Because the bayou was where he'd first tasted the sweetness of love and the bitterness of loss….

Ten years ago Brijette Dupre had been a pregnant backwoods girl who felt her only choice was to accept the Wheelers' money—to leave Cade alone. She couldn't know his family had lied to them both….

Now Cade's back. Considering their past relationship and current attraction, working with him is hard enough. Add to the mix his unknown daughter—the daughter Brijette had kept despite the Wheelers' demands—and it becomes close to impossible.

Utterly boring! Here I expected to find a decent book with high emotions and well written characters. Instead I find a bias author who seems to think the heroine is all at fault for secret and lies, while the hero gets off scot-free and same with the heroes mother. It was pathetic.

Sigh.
When I pick a romance to read, I expect a quick and sweet read. I put this on top because I've always like the secret child theme though I'm not sure exactly why. It maybe just the intrigue. The years of not being together or the First Love never dies that is almost always attached to the secret-baby plot. God knows why I am fascinated with First Love when I don't even believe or remember mine. Maybe because I don't believe?
Anyway, The book started out fine. The writing isn't choppy so it's not a chore to go on. A couple of hours after I started though, I had to stop and look at the pages to see how far I've gone because I had a bad feeling. As soon as I saw that I've only gone 1/6 I had to shift perspective and just try to find the thing to get on with the next one. It just felt like reading a more serious book. It's like when you're looking to read a chick-lit to feel light-hearted and ended up getting a high fantasy instead. Which you do not have the energy to read that's why you went for the chick-lit in the first place! It really puts me in a bad mood when my choice for a relaxation for a a day break from a long work days is a disappointment. I'm tempted to bring the rating down to 1 just to be vindictive but that's not fair because it wasn't a bad book really.
Just misleading. I wanted a romance and ended up with a mystery book half-assed done.
Should have stick with historical romance and harlequin books.
Oh wait this is a harlequin produce and that just sucks.
Huh. Now I'm remembering other faults when I double checked the publisher and saw the other reviews and maybe I will bring it down to 1 star but honestly have no more energy to spend to elaborate and the above bothered me more than anything anyway.
Maybe I'll be picking up the bdsm-former-fanfic next to recover.

This was a sweet reunion romance, and the "secret child" concept was handled realistically, rather than coming off as cheesy and contrived. It seems that there are other books set in Cypress Landing, so I'll have to be on the look out for them. The main drawbacks about this book were that Cade's mother had a dramatic personality change in a very short space of time (which didn't seem at all believable, given how she'd been known to behave) and the reasoning behind the drug-smuggling plot felt a bit contrived. The ending of the book was a little rushed, as well. The romance itself was excellent, it was just some of the additional aspects of the novel that didn't mesh properly. 3.5*

Not my usual kind of romance because I don't like people withholding information that's relevant to others. But if you can overlook that fact for a while than this book is pleasant. Its about two people who have made mistakes and come back together and take over their responsibilities and find love again.

Aburrido.
