Meet Harlow Torrent, part-time journalist and full-time Slip Witch in this three-book cozy mystery box set!
Butter Witch (Torrent Witches Book 1) The International Butter Festival has come to town! When Harlow Torrent, part-time journalist and full-time Slip witch stumbles upon a dead body, frozen and drained of blood, she's pulled into a murder mystery. Someone has murdered one of the Butter Festival competitors. Was it Zero Bend, punk sculptor extraordinaire with a history of violence? Perhaps Fusion Swan, a sleazy agent playing the publicity game when his clients meet their untimely end. Between trying to run her struggling online newspaper, dealing with her highly caffeinated cousins Molly and Luce, fending off three meddling witch mothers who will do anything to get their daughters married off (including drugging food with magic potions) and great Aunt Cass who appears to be running an underground laboratory of some kind, Harlow barely has time to breathe, let alone solve a murder. Romance certainly isn't on the cards either but the hot scruffy guy new to town seems to have other ideas...
Treasure Witch (Torrent Witches Book 2) Harlow Torrent, part-time journalist and full-time Slip Witch is pulled into a murder mystery when the skeletons of a man and a girl are uncovered on Truer Island. Seeing visions of the past that are all too real and ghosts who are becoming more solid by the day, Harlow is trying to keep her online newspaper running, dealing with her meddling witch family and working out what to do about the very handsome Jack Bishop being back in town. But Harlow might be out of her depth when the murderer sets their sights on her!
Hidden Witch (Torrent Witches Book 3) Harlow Torrent, part-time journalist and full-time Slip Witch is hot on the trail of an arsonist. But who is behind the deadly fires? Someone working for their own evil ends or a fire spirit acting according to its nature? Or perhaps a magical power hidden away? Between dealing with sleazy real estate developers intent on getting their hands on Torrent Mansion, a teenage Slip Witch who just might be the Queen of Sarcasm, a talking magical cat who smells like lavender, and an AWOL potential future boyfriend, Harlow would love nothing more than a peaceful Summer. But when an special arson investigator arrives in town with his sights set on Harlow, she has to fight to clear her name!
Harlow Torrent is a part-time journalist, part-time post-life resolution therapist, and full-time Slip Witch (one with random powers and who doesn’t have really good control of that). This three-book box set contains the first three stories in the series. I liked these books way more than I thought I would. Good stories, quirky characters, interesting settings, and a nice mix of humor, romance, plausible magic, and mystery. Best read in order, I think.
Butter Witch (Torrent Witches Cozy Mysteries Book 1)
Harlow stumbles over a dead body, frozen and drained of blood, during Harlot Bay, North Carolina’s Butter Festival. The suspects are numerous, and between having to deal with three meddling witch-mothers (one of them her own), two wound up cousins who run a gift shop/coffee bar, and a great aunt witch with some shady side businesses, Harlow has her hands full.
This first book does a good job introducing the characters, including Harlow’s talking cat, and the locale while proving an interesting mystery to solve.
Treasure Witch (Torrent Witches Cozy Mysteries Book 2)
Harlow gets pulled into a mystery when the skeletons of a man and a girl are uncovered on Truer Island, the location of a Ninja Warrior-type of competition. Harlow’s visions of dead people are becoming more pronounced. She’s trying to keep her online newspaper running while dealing with her wacky family, her evolving witch skills, and solving the murder of a father and his little girl so they can move on. Oh, and trying to figure out where she and the handsome Jack Bishop, contractor extraordinaire, are going.
Book 2 is even better, getting to watch Harlow and her cousins deal with their marriage minded mamas, as well as seeing Harlow grow into her powers.
Hidden Witch (Torrent Witches Cozy Mysteries Book 3)
Harlow is hot on the trail of an arsonist, trying to figure out whether that’s someone with evil intent, or a fire spirit acting out. She’s also having to fight sleazy real estate developers who want to take the family mansion, take care of a teenage Slip Witch, worry over the AWOL Jack Bishop, and defend herself against an aggressive arson investigator who would like nothing more than locking her up.
Book 3 was another fun, engaging read. I prefer my magic to be in the realm of possibility, and these books deliver. Nobody sparkles, the talking cat sounds just like what I would expect, and the magical elements add to the enjoyment of the stories.
I’m so upset I gave this author money for what is boarderline plagiarism. The Midwest Witches series by Amanda M. Lee is the original, 2012 publication of this storyline and it is so much more well written. The similarities are in no way coincidental. Sure all cozy witch mysteries might be similar but when 8 characters are almost identical to the Midwest Witches books, it’s theft. Don’t buy these books. Pay the original author.
I really enjoyed this box set of cozy witch mysteries though I must say they bear a striking similarity to Amanda Lee’s Wicked Witch’s of the Midwest series. Three cousins, three mom’s, father’s left, Crazy aunt, etc. Both series have great character development though and are fun reads.
This is definitely a young adult series of books. But each book is an engaging mystery that kept me interested. My favorite is reading about the family dynamic.
The stories just flew by smoothly as one. The characters are so cute and fun. Each one so different and you can see them in your minds eye. I couldn't stop reading. Great witch sleuthing stories.
