Penny McAllister had big dreams. Becoming a witch wasn’t one of them.
Penny and her best friend Joy took a big risk when they returned to the quaint tourist town of Spring Valley to open a coffee shop. They thought they had the perfect location— the old, dilapidated Beacon Theater.
So what if the locals said it was haunted. Of course it had a giant hole in the ceiling. Sure, the whole place is filled with scary books in a strange runic language and mysterious vials of who knows what. Nobody said this would be easy.
But when they venture into the basement and find a woman's body hidden in a room that’s locked from the inside, they know they've got more than they bargained for.
The police don’t think it's murder, but that doesn’t stop her ghost from waking them up one morning or a strange hooded figure from trying to break into their new business. Evil lurks in the shadows and it's up to Penny and Joy, with the help of their newfound magical abilities, to solve the mystery of the deceased woman and stop the Beacon from being overrun.
Ava Day knows her way in writing a witchy mystery. The caracters are range from buoyant, frivolous, to downright evil. Penny and best friend Joy have pooled their money together to open an art gallery/coffee bistro in a small town they visited as young girls. While inspecting their newly acquired building the ladies come across many strange old artifacts one being a beginners book of witch craft, there begins Penny and Joys strange and terrifying beginning into a life of entrepreneurs the witchy way. 🙄🤔😮☺ KAT
Penny and her BFF Joy buy and old theatre and are going to renovate it to hold two new business they wish to start. They quickly find out the theatre has more in it than empty space. They end up trying to solve a "murder", they find out it is haunted and a whole lot more. This was a new author for me and she didn't disappoint. I loved the book and can't wait to read book two. I read this book straight through because it hooked me on page one and didn't stop until the last page.
Be careful what you witch for, seriously though!?! Otherwise you would end up frustrated on a friday night reading a book like this. DNF at 62%, yes Beacon Theatre is a treasure, yeah we all get it, no need to be repeating over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over about that! And when you write a book about a subject, there's this thing called researching the subject, isn't there? Not all witches get their powers. Uh, seriously?! Hocus pocus??
DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT WITCHCRAFT ACTUALLY MEANS??
And inventing creatures from the underworld, can two protagonists get any more dumber, i mean those ingredients and the words in the spells are not enough to freak you out. You give permission for the spirits to enter?! And what the fuck Harold? This is not some clever Sherlock level mystery case, this is a broken tape recorder getting on my nerves. Romance is more dead than the ghosts. Stop making fetch happen, Ava. God!! Three precious hours wasted, crap!! Bat wings, vampire vomit, Imp oil- Don't mind me, just trying to describe the books using some ridiculous ingredients it uses for spellcraft craft in bold quotes¿
Loved it. Okay a bit far fetched and slightly over the top but an entertaining read nevertheless. A old movie theatre and two young women who want to realise their dream of running their own business. What they hadn't banked on was a skeleton, magic books and ingredients and a shadowy cloaked figure making their lives difficult. Can they find out what happened in the past and thus ensure the present goes as they planned. Magic, ghosts and intrigue are all interwoven into an OTT plot. The characters are also slightly out of the norm but you will either love them or loathe them. I thoroughly enjoyed this and loved the fact that the author just went with what they felt.
Really enjoyed reading this book hopefully there will be more interesting times for penny and joy. Some parts were a little hard to follow but it was a good beginning
