The monster demon is BACK! ...and he’s had twenty-six years to plot his revenge. More horrifying than any Hollywood-animated, computer-generated, mechanical unreality, the winged demon called an efreet will do anything to get what he wants. Pronounce that: An-y-thing
Defeated in 1985 by three twelve-year-olds, the monster returns determined to kill them. In The Knowing, the first book of the trilogy, he sends five demon-possessed men to murder Jack Carpenter, Becca Hawkins and Daniel Burke—the now-adult twelve-year olds whose memories of that childhood summer when they battled a monster have been erased. Against all odds, the three escape and survive—only to discover that the man possessed by the efreet has been nominated to fill a vacancy on the United States Supreme Court.
In The Deceiving, the second book of The Knowing trilogy, the efreet has changed his tactics. He’s not trying to kill the three who defeated him anymore. In “less time than it takes to cook a pot roast” he totally devastates their lives instead—as payback, and to keep them too busy to oppose his court nomination. And the monster has other plans, too, unspeakable plans, uglier than any of them could possibly imagine.
In parallel storylines, the three twelve-year-olds battle the efreet during the summer of 1985 and their adult counterparts fight to keep a demon-possessed man from sitting on the highest court of the land in 2011.
The Deceiving is a heart-racing, page-turning paranormal suspense novel about ordinary people who don’t want to believe that angels and demons, monsters from hell, walk the earth among us every day. But they have no choice--because it’s true. If you enjoy a hard-hitting story with themes that will challenge what you believe about yourself, about life and reality, about good and evil and the whole nature of the universe, this book is for you.
Interview with the Author Q - What makes The Deceiving a special?
A - It carries on the story of the characters readers adopted into their families in The Knowing: Book One. Not James Bond types who fight off six armed attackers at once without breaking a sweat, who never seem to run out of bullets or have a bad hair day. They're normal people who just want to live their ordinary lives in peace. But they can't. They've seen the invisible monsters that walk among us. And once you've seen ... As Theresa Washington says, "You can't un-know the truth. Once you know it, you're responsible for doin' somethin' about it."
Q - Why did you write a series?
A - Because the story was too big for 1 book. Even for 2. Writing a series gave me the chance to tell a sprawling tale of supernatural spiritual warfare and dark psychic suspense that spans a quarter of a century. A story peopled with folks you could bump carts with in a small town grocery store--so when the unexplainable starts to happen to them, you realize the same thing could happen to you, too.
Q - Why should readers give this book a try?
A - Because it’s a paranormal thriller that will sweep you up into the reality of a world you never dreamed existed, a reality so gripping you’ll decide the dirty dishes aren't going anywhere and the car will survive one more day without an oil change. Might not want to start this book at bedtime. Just sayin'...
I was born in Socorro, New Mexico, sometime shortly after the earth cooled off. It’s clear that from the outset my parents never intended for me to amount to anything. How could I? With a name like “Ninie?” Please.
Fame and fortune do not come to people named Ninie Bovell (My maiden name.) Gabriella Bovary? You could work with that. Even something as pedestrian as Madeline Bovell or Rebecca Bovell or (though you’d lose points here for lack of originality) Elizabeth Bovell. But Ninie? I never had a chance.
If I sound a mite hostile, bear in mind that in one decisive stroke my parents sentenced their precious newborn daughter to a lifetime of explanations that began my first day at Muleshoe Elementary School. (Yeah, Muleshoe. The hits just keep on coming.) After a painful week, I had a rap down that I still use today:
“No, it’s not Ninnie like skinny and penny. It’s Ninie—rhymes with tiny and shiny. 9e…get it? And no, it doesn’t mean anything, it isn’t short for anything, long for anything, or a substitute for anything. It just is. (Pause here for the inevitable ‘Why?’) You got me, pal, I couldn’t tell you.”
I grew up in Texas, got a BA in English and theatre from Texas Tech University and snagged a job as a newspaper reporter. Didn't know a thing about journalism, but my editor said if I could write he could teach me the rest of it and if I couldn't write the rest of it didn't matter. I hung in there for a 25-year career as a journalist. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world, but as soon as I figured out that making up the facts was a whole lot more fun than reporting them, I never looked back.
In every book I write I try to keep this promise to Loyal Reader: I will tell you a story in a distinctive voice you'll always recognize, about people as ordinary as you are--people who have been slammed by something they didn’t sign on for, and now they must fight for their lives. Then smack in the middle of their everyday worlds, those people encounter the unexplainable--and it's always the game-changer."
I could not wait to start this book and I was not let down, though I was a bit pissed off, not by the author but by the story. As with most trilogies, they seem to be the valley between two mountain tops. That is true for this one as well. However, I was still on the edge of my chair at that edge of tension for each step forward at times there were two steps back. Now I sit and wait for the last book and hope that every bad guy gets what is coming to them.
Ninie has a great way of spinning her stories and intertwining them from the past to present, I do not know how she does not lose a single line or more in the process. I have yet to see a story line drop or a character to be forgotten about that she has brought into the story line. This is what makes her story's so well thought out as well as her characters so deep and rich.
I actually surprised myself when I realized I had actually read one of her other books. I thought when I read the first one I had just met her as an author but I was wrong. Now I am reading some of her other works as I wait patiently for the third book. (NOT! I WANT IT NOW!!!)
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I liked this book even better than the first book in the series "The Knowing." It starts with a bang and sucked me back into the story within the first few chapters. I didn't remember much about The Knowing when starting this one but Ninie gives just enough information to refresh your memory/ catch you up without making it feel like you are reading the synopsis of the previous book. Once again her writing is good and character development is solid. She flicks between the years well and makes it easy to keep up. I am not normally a fan of stories of the supernatural however this is so artfully written that I enjoyed it regardless. Ninie Hammon is fast becoming one of my favourite authors.
I didn’t think it could get any better but it did!!
The Deceiving, book two in The Knowing Trilogy, is one hell of a book. It picks up right where The Knowing ended. Daniel and Jack have just fought off two demons hell bent on killing them and one of those demons succeeded in killing Emily, Daniels wife. And just when they think they can sit down and relax the efreet aka Chapman Whitworth has just been nominated for the Supreme Court. The Deceiving reads a lot like The Knowing. The story jumps from present to the events of 1985. We get a much deeper look of some of the events that happened that summer and several mysteries are revealed, but like any good book we are left with new questions that need to be answered. I can’t wait to start reading The Reckoning.
I'm hooked on The Knowing Trilogy. The Knowing is a great start and The Deceiving is just as good. Ms Hammon's writing draws me into the story and I have to know what happens next. This story is told in the past,1985 and in the present, 2011. The "Bad Kids" are truly scary and at 12 they have super human strength that comes from the demons . One of the most chilling scenes involves a lone fisherman and one of the really bad kids who says "Ever pull the wings off a fly?" Your imagination can't be as scary as what happens next. The character development is excellent.
This is horror at it's best. I strongly recommend this author and the trilogy.
Will make you want to go to church and get religion! I can't remember ever reading books like this. Ninie has such a way with words and before you know it, there's a whole book you just finished. It's scary, it's evil, it's mysterious, and I just couldn't put it down. This series has given me chills. The characters are very well developed and believable. The dialogue flows freely and smoothly. The editing is very clean. There are no profanities or inappropriate sexual behaviors. I would recommend this book to anyone over 14.
I read This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness many years ago and have read many more of Frank Peretti's novels since. Ninie Mammon's writing allows the reader to see through the veil between the natural and the supernatural. One reviewer of her work compared her to Stephan King, and he was correct in the sense that both author's monsters are tightening. The difference is Ninie Hammond's monsters are real.
You know how second books in a trilogy tend to lag as far as action goes? Believe it or not, this book actually tops the suspense and action of the original story. We toggle between 1985 and present day (2011) to see how the efreet is doing some serious damage in Theresa, Jack, and Daniel's lives. We also travel back to Jack's childhood, to the day of the Twin Oaks fire, and relive that whole experience alongside him.
Supernatural is not at all my forte, but read the first book and had to read on. Now I have to go cause I want to find out what happens in book 3. Loved every minute of it.
This book is a page turner and I couldn't stop reading; however, there is a lot of gross parts. I don't enjoy reading or watching horror and this book has quite a bit in it. I skipped over all of the slasher parts.
This isn't the type of book I normally read but the first in this series got me have hooked. I don't like it when a lot of loose ends at left but still these books captured my interest and have held it.
Better get out your rosary beads and start praying!!!
Just as hold on to your rosary beads scary as the first book. But as scared as I felt at times I couldn't put it down. I look forward to reading the next book in this trilogy
I was provided an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This author never disappoints no matter the theme of her book. This is a supernatural thriller documenting the battle between good and evil. The evil are demons possessing people and causing them to create unspeakable crimes against their neighbors and friends. Three friends have fought these demons in the past and now 26 years later the need to battle the demons again. This story kept me on the edge of my seat due to the very descriptive language used by Ms. Hammon. What a great author!! If you like Stephen King you will love this story. My recommendation is that you read The Knowing first and then this book. Can't wait for the third book in this trilogy.
Ninnie Hammon is definitely on her way. I started with The Memory Closet, then Five Days in May. She does not use the cookie cutter method of writing. So far each book is unique. Book two of The Knowing, the Deceiving, picks up where we left off and takes us on a merry ride into an evil so dark that no light can shine through... or can it? Enter Daniel, Jack, Theresa Washington, Andi and Becca. They offer the only hope to stop a demon from becoming President of the United States.
Awesome book. I actually enjoyed it more than Book 1 and I didn't think that was possible. Book 1 "The Knowing" was fantastic. "The Deceiving" answered alot of questions from the Knowing. Helped understand the characters and what they've been through. It was like reading 2 books in one. I am excited and afraid for book 3. Who knows what will come out of Ninie's head for the conclusion, I do know it's going to be Amazing!! Great job
Ninie Hammon has wowed me again with the second book in her Knowing Trilogy. The characters are so easy to get to know...each speaking with their own dialects (and yes, I do hear them speaking as I read what she writes). Her descriptions of the (SPOILER) riding on the boys shoulders made me shudder. Definitely, read the first book before the second; it'll give so much more meaning to the book. Can't wait for number 3.
This is a good 2nd book of the Knowing trilogy. This one went back and forth from year 1985 and 2011. It very easy to understand and everything tied together. Becca and Andi are the only ones to actually see demons but Theresa Bishop can feel their presence. Her husband could see them before he died. Can't wait for the third book to come out. They will have to get rid of secrete the top demon.
When I started this book I could not put it down. Had to keep reading to see what came next! Such a good storyline and I love her character development, they could almost walk off the page! Lots of action, intrigue and paranormal instances. I hope there is another book in this series....they are truly enjoyable...
This book is second in the series, called The Deceiving: Book Two in the Knowing. This brings us further along in the story of a high demon called an street. Will good win; waiting for book 3.
