Seven for the Apocalypse brings together Kit Reed's powerful 1994 novella with seven short stories about love and isolation. A work of metaphysical science fiction and a finalist for the Tiptree award, Little Sisters of the Apocalypse interweaves two stories. The first follows a motorcycle gang of radical nuns on their mission to save an island of women, abandoned by the men who have gone to war, from a band of outlaws. Of course, not all of the women need, or want, to be saved. The second narrative traces the long-term illness and eventual death of the author's mother, herself a World War II widow. Her 2013 "best-of" collection, The Story Until Now, A Great Big Book of Stories was a 2013 Shirley Jackson Award nominee. A Guggenheim fellow, she was the first American recipient of an international literary grant from the Abraham Woursell Foundation. She's had stories in, among others, The Yale Review, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Omni and The Norton Anthology of Contemporary Literature. Her books Weird Women, Wired Women and Little Sisters of the Apocalypse were finalists for the Tiptree Prize. A member of the board of the Authors League Fund, she served as Resident Writer at Wesleyan University.

This later republication ofLittle Sisters of the Apocalypse ties it up in a collection of stories: contemporary AWOL fairy tales, realist deteriorations, eyes of the vindicative home security system, political vampires, even a riff on Kafka by way of George Saunders' CivilWarLand. Nothing as developed as the novella at the center, but sparkles with brisk intelligence, as stories should.

This book contains several short stories, along with the main story; a novelette about a group of biker nuns trying to prevent something bad from occurring in a female-dominated post-apocalyptic community. I found Reed's writing style pleasant and easy to get into. I also enjoyed the amount of creativity found within each of her stories. This was a quick and smooth read from start to finish. I will definitely read more from this author if given the opportunity.

August 9, 2009I just bought a copy of this yesterday and then realized why the title sounded familiar... I already had a copy at home! If anyone wants my spare, let me know!
