There are few footfalls along the path of life that we choose for ourselves. We are dragged through hoping that, at least, the prints we leave will tell our story as we hoped it would be.
We rejoin the four that brought us to this point. Socair, Óraithe, Rianaire, and Aile still live, as best they can, in a world that moves ever closer to war. Perhaps they will struggle against it, perhaps they will walk with the changing winds.
They each see the path laid behind them through their own eyes. It is through the eyes of others that shadows grow. One is never asked, but still, they will each come to understand the weight of their own shadow.
I bought this (and other books) from Mr. Fitzgerald at a convention in August 2016. I purchased the books on a whim thinking I'd help out a local author and I was intrigued by the descriptions. I'm extremely glad I did. Once I started reading, I had a difficult time putting his books down.
One's Own Shadow is again four stories intertwined into one excellent novel. Although the characters rarely cross paths, there is some interaction between the groups and their actions still affect the others, more so now than in No One's Chosen. It's really the point of views given by distinctly different personalities woven into the same world that makes One's Own Shadow so good.
Socair - She's still a leader, but in a much larger sense. She's gone from being the typical fantasy heroine the world wants, to being the heroine the world needs. However, it's lonely at the top and she finds out why. Her challenges force a new way of thinking but she’s driven to make the right decisions for her people.
Óraithe - Where I really didn't like her in No One's Chosen, she's an awesome character in One's Own Shadow. Her strength and conviction come through and she becomes a real leader and heroine. She's still a kid, but she has some trials that force her to grow quickly and become an unwitting hero.
Rianaire - Still my favorite character, but just barely. She's still the perverted leader, but if she had some eye opening experiences before, it's nothing to what happens to her now. Hard decisions can change a person, but she remains the person I really like the most.
Aile - Seriously, Aile is awesome. Dark and out for herself, she shows the lengths she is willing to go to correct the wrongs against her.
I can't recommend One's Own Shadow enough, seriously get this book (and No One's Chosen). Mr. Fitzgerald, hurry up and write book 3!
One's Own Shadow continues the Siuil series by Randall P. Fitzgerald. While book one (No One's Chosen) introduced us to the four elven women who are battling their own demons in the midst of war, book two follows them on their journeys through the politics and policies of the kingdoms that rule them.
I truly enjoyed book one, but One's Own Shadow brought Fitzgerald's storytelling to an addictive level. The volume is immense, but I read most of it in just a couple of days because I simply couldn't put it down. The way the characters push their ways forward against huge odds, coupled with the way they are woven together to touch one another's stories was an absolute delight to see. I look forward to the next book. Woooo!
