My eldest son has been at University for a year and has become better at cooking for himself. He is now ready to move away from a handful of tried and tested recipes and is keen to branch out and try new things. This is a fairly heavy book in weight, which opens up well so you can follow the pages. It is also bright, colourful and attractive; with lots of photographs (although sadly not of every recipe).

The contents are laid out as: introduction, brekky and lunchbox, healthy and hearty, good grains, beans and pulses, super salads, snacks and sides, make it light, sweet alternatives, back to basics and a useful index. There is also a lot of useful information on healthy habits, knowing alcohol units and ways to get fit, as well as budgeting – with recipes rated from 1, 2 and 3 in affordability. As such, these recipes are also useful for anyone wanting to cook on a budget; with a range of meals that can be cooked very cheaply.

Of course, any cookbook is only as good as its recipes and these include a good range, with simple instructions, nutritional tips and information on how long each takes to prep and cook, as well as how many people it will serve. As students often don’t have much in the way of equipment, there are also lots of useful easy meals, such as ‘one-pot chicken,’ or ‘tuna and olive pasta,’ and great breakfasts – ‘mixed grain porridge.’ ‘apple and yogurt muesli,’ and ‘blueberry, oat and honey crumble.’ There are also some more adventurous recipes and lots of cooking from scratch, which will improve cooking skills, improve healthy eating and cut costs. A great volume for any student heading off to university, which will, hopefully, help motivate them to avoid constant take aways and try cooking for themselves.

The design of every page is beautiful. It's clear a lot of work has gone into the look and feel of the book. Some of the recipes overestimate how long they would take to make. There is a range of meat based, vegetarian and vegan recipes. As I am now vegan I no longer need this book.

I love the book. I am not particularly a student, but I have no time or money to cook good food for myself.
I love the recipes in the book and have tried more than 25 recipes!

Lots of healthy recipes which are cheap too. Good not just for students but also those looking to eat well on a budget.
