John Wellington "Jack" Kent (1920 – 1985) was an American cartoonist and prolific author-illustrator of children's books. He is perhaps best known as the creator of the comic strip King Aroo. In addition to his own books, he illustrated more than twenty books by other authors.
Some old familiar adages here - Don't count your chickens before they're hatched, Be content with enough, Don't be fooled by flattery, and one I wish I could remember to heed - Sometimes you can get more respect by keeping your mouth shut. All are brought to life by Kent's simple, yet evocative artwork. This one's worth seeking out.
Recently found this copy that my grandmother gave me when I was eight years old, so I decided to read it again. It's as charming and funny as I remember. Kent's illustrations make the moralizing fun. I was surprised at how some of the lessons have stuck with me over the last few decades.
I've always enjoyed Aesop's Fables. We had a collection around the house, and I remember genuinely thinking about these stories as a child. The golden egg one especially -- don't kill the golden goose! Appreciate the eggs it's giving you!
My used copy as written in it "Brian, Sonja Lindstrom" and "Activities".
