Helen Shirley was born on February 20 1939 in New Zealand, where she grew up, an only child possessed by a vivid imagination and a love for reading. She wrote stories for amusement in her early teenage years, and when she left leaving school, she took a secretarial job at a father-and-son legal firm.

At age twenty-one Helen joined a girlfriend and embarked on a working holiday in Australia, travelling via cruise ship from Auckland to Melbourne. Alas, no shipboard romance, as she spent all four days in her cabin suffering from sea-sickness! After fifteen months working in Melbourne, Helen and her friend bought a vehicle and took three months to drive the length and breadth of Australia, choosing to work in Cairns in order to fund the final leg of our journey to Sydney.

It was in Cairns that Helen met her future husband, Danilo Bianchin, an Italian immigrant from Treviso. He was a tobacco sharefarmer from the tobacco farming community of Mareeba. His English was pitiful, and her command of Italian was nil. Six months later they married, and Helen was flung into cooking for up to nine tobacco pickers, stringing tobacco, feeding 200 chickens, a few turkeys, ducks... plus killing, cleaning and cooking the same! Her knowledge of Italian improved, and there were hilarious moments in retrospect. Some of what she endured was cooking on a wood-burning stove, having no running hot water, a primitive shower and toilet facilities, washing uniforms for two soccer teams during the soccer season... floods, horrendous hailstone damage to tobacco crops, hardship, and the stillbirth of their first child. Then, to their joy, Helen's daughter, Lucia, was born. Three years later the couple returned to New Zealand, where they settled for sixteen years. During those early years, they added two sons, Angelo and Peter, to the family.

With multiple anecdotes of farm life in an Italian community to friends, the idea of writing a book occurred. A romance, set on a tobacco farm in Australia's far north, Queensland, featuring an Italian hero. Helen says, "the background was authentic, believe me!" However the hero was rich and owned the farm artistic license! It took her a year to complete a passable manuscript, typed on a portable typewriter at the dining room table. That first effort was deemed too short with insufficient detail. Helen rewrote it. This time it was considered too long with too much extraneous detail. She revised, then sent it to London. Four months later she received a telegram from Alan Boon (Mills & Boon) to say they intended to publish and a contract would be sent in the mail. It was the most wonderful news!

Helen wrote ten more books while living in New Zealand, then in 1981, her family resettled in Australia, on Queensland's Gold Coast. She has since published twenty-five more books. Today, with computer technology, the mechanics of writing are much easier. However, the writing process doesn't change. Helen says that she's having a good day if she can achieve 5 good pages, which she is likely to change, edit and rewrite the following day.

She loves creating characters, giving them life and providing a situation where their emotions are tested and love wins out. For her, the greatest praise is for a reader to say they couldn't put the book down... then Helen knows that she has achieved what she set out to do -- "create a moving enjoyable story which holds the reader entertained from beginning to end."

Helen's hobbies are tennis, table-tennis, judo, reading. She loves movies, and leads an active social life.

3 1/2 Stars ~ Three years ago, Rebekah had married only to discover that the man she thought she loved had a dark side. It took her three months to escape his abuse, get the protective orders in place and finally achieve her divorce. Partnering with her sister, Ana, in a flower shop gave her the outlet she needed and though she's vowed never to fall in love again, she has found contentment. A year before, Jace had been best man for his cousin, Luc, and he'd experienced such a magnetic attraction to the bride's sister that he's never forgotten her. Back in Sydney on business, he asks Luc and Ana to invite Rebekah to join him for dinner. The last time Rebekah had seen Jace was when she'd slapped his face for kissing her at Ana's wedding, and she has no desire to spend time with him. But pressure from Ana to get a life again, forces her to accept his dinner invitation. When her ex-husband, Brad, spots her at the restaurant with Jace, it starts up another vicious campaign of stalking and harassment. This time though, Rebekah has Jace and her brother-in-law, Luc, on her side.

Jace has an uncanny knack of reading Rebekah's thoughts that unnerves her. She's a wounded soul and extremely man shy. He's determined in his pursuit and his protection. She's equally determined not to get involved and to lead her own life on her own terms. Ms. Bianchin has a definite talent for creating chemistry that heats up the pages. She loves to make her heroes viril and ubber protective, and Jace fits this mold perfectly. She also has a love for the word "evocative" while it suited the scenes written, it's repetitive use lessened my reading experience, and my ranking lowered 1/2 star. All in all, Jace and Rebekah make a great couple and I enjoyed their journey to HEA

I didn't enjoy this book. Its a pity though. The book started off really well, and I felt that it had a lot of potential. But right after the good intro, the rest of the book just went downhill.

So I felt that the heroine, Rebekah I believe, was a rather strong character. Most of the time she was likable, but sometimes she just annoyed me. And I felt that sometimes, she was way too strong. Like, I know she wants to be independent but can't she see she's in danger??

Anyway... Sigh, I don't really know what to say. Ok let's see, I would have appreciated some of Jace's POV. I just couldn't enjoy it cos there was little to none of what he felt. Hence, it wasn't convincing for me. I just couldn't enjoy it. I also didn't really like his character. I dunno, I felt it was very passive and not at all what I like in a hero. How should I say it? He was hot and all, yes. But I dunno, I didn't like how he went about romancing Rebekah. It didn't have any depth to it. To be honest, I don't know why they fell in love.

OH YES. I couldn't stand how the book just seemed to start in the middle of nowhere. I didn't read the first book, so perhaps that was the reason, but the first book was about other characters! Its like I couldn't understand why Jace loved her. I mean, I get the feeling he fell in love with her during his cousin's wedding, but I can't see how. I mean, according to what little of the background, they barely talk, he just kissed her then she slapped him. I dunno, I don't see how he can love her, maybe just attracted to her?

Sigh, I don't really know, I felt the romance was rather boring and it didn't capture my attention. All it showed was how he tried to get her to go out on dates with him. Erm, the conversations throughout the book felt a little stilted and it wasn't a lot.

Another thing was that I couldn't understand how 10 days before meeting him again, she was so afraid of love, afraid of guys in general. But within those 10 days, she suddenly fell in love with him. I just can't believe it.

Sigh, I really dunno what to say except I felt the book was too short and that may have resulted in there not being enough space to go more in depth into the character feelings.

All in all, I didn't enjoy the book. I did like the chemistry between them though, especially at the beginning. Towards the end though, it just kind of dwindled away and I didn't like it all that much. And I don't like Jace. He's kinda too weak? for my tastes. Maybe not exactly weak, but not strong either...

I honestly cannot understand why other people enjoy this book so much. Maybe its just me, but I really really really couldn't stand it.

A quick 3/4 hour read; I was reading it till 4am!

Found this in my library Overdrive and dud not read book one Ana and Luc's story.

Like some reviews said we have no idea why Jace fell so hard for Rebekah. I don't think it was insta-love but more instant attraction at Ana and Luc's wedding. He kissed her, she slapped him and they parted ways never meeting for a year. He couldn't get her out of his mind and cane back to see if the attraction was still there.

What a great guy Jace was! But I found the way he could read her mind like an open book and answered ALL her questions verbally really frightening!

But nothing is more scary than an abusive ex who cannot leave you alone, with a rich and powerful mother to rescue him so he could continue with his crimes.

Rebekah may want to be assertive and prove she could handle the situation but I'm glad Ana, Luc and Jace stepped in to protect her. Sometimes it's ok to kean on others for help and this is definitely it! Stubborn woman...

I noticed Helen Bianchin has a very stilted way of writing with a lot of details: what the characters did like brush teeth, coffee, drive to work, ... The dialogue can also be stulted sometimes. But I don't know why I like it in a way haha...it seems to let me know the daily routines and life if her characters.

One funny detail I noted was after Ana booked an air ticket for Rebekah...the 'courier despatched the e-ticket' to her. Erm an e-ticket does not need paperwork unless they are talking about the printout?

It seemed the author was trying to impress with mention of new technology. ..I did check the book was written in 2002 hehe 15 years ago!

I always read and enjoy Helen Bianchin's books, and this being a sequel to her previous book 'A passionate surrender', I was determined to read it anyway. This book didn't disappoint, and it was really good to read the story of the peripheral characters in the original book. Recommended, but read the first novel (a passionate surrender) first. You won't be disappointed. Both heroes are very well written...

I like Helen Bianchin's writing style.

This is the second book to 'A passionate Surrender'.

Two sisters and two books. Each with their own story. I liked the narrative and the interaction between the two main characters. Certainly worth reading and enjoyable.

This is the second story of sister's who marry Greek men. Rebekah is a divorcee who doesn't want another man. Her first husband abused her. Jace is the cousin to the first story and has set his eye's on Rebekah. He is in Austrialia for business and to catch up with his cousin and the woman he meet at that marriage, (Rebekah). He is around when her ex starts stalking her and stays to help protect. Love Bianchin's story telling and the verbal play with words that can and do have double meaning.

Harlequin Presents romances are my normal go-to books when I'm looking for some really good and quick reads. This book was not bad nor extremely great but I'm pretty sure it was good enough to have warranted a re-read or two.

I found this book in a free little library in Geneva. I was just about to go to Greece on my honeymoon so had to grab it! The writing was…awful. Like sometimes didn’t even make sense. But it was an entertaining romance novel nonetheless.
