Got to about the fifth story and was finding it hard to motivate myself to keep reading it, so I gave it up. The ones I read were so-so, I think I liked the first one by Hugh McLennan although I ironically can't remember anything about it now. The last full story I read was by Sinclair Ross and I was finding it a real slog. I started the next one about the firing squad and thought "no, this isn't doing anything for me" and returned the book to the library.

I have mixed feelings about this collection, for the very reason that it is very mixed - particularly in quality. On one hand, there are a number of well-known masters of Canadian short stories, such as Sinclair Ross. On the other hand, there remain a significant quantity of stories in this collection that are of poor enough quality that it prevents their being overlooked. Few of the authors not already of great renown have anything new or revelatory to contribute, and yet they stand next to those who are quite passably emperors of their craft. Sadly, though, the mediocrity of lesser words damages the collection so badly that I can only give a two of five review, with many stretching to reach one star and a select few achieving five.

My favourite short story in this collection is" The Painted Door". Great story with an incredible ending.

My favorite is Always a Motive. I liked After the Sirens too! :) I didn't like the other stories as much as I liked those two. :)
