America is in crisis. 9/11 is the root cause."Death of a Nation" tells the story of how the American government shocked its people into a state of fearful obedience, and exploited that power to enable a decline into overt fascism.Examining the key players within America's government as well as the states that supported and sponsored the attacks, "Death of a Nation" argues that 9/11 was falsely portrayed by the Bush administration, and in fact carried out by elements within the United States government and military, to further their own geopolitical and financial interests.9/11 was an event engineered and designed to allow the Bush administration to hijack America's democracy, conducting huge and expensive wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and overseeing a financial boom that robbed the middle class of a generation of wealth and brought the world to its knees in 2008."Death of a Nation" provides a searing indictment of the role now played by America in global affairs, and warns that with a broken society and body politic, the world is seeing the rise of the most overtly fascist nation since the Second World War, with profoundly disturbing implications for the future of humanity."Death of a Nation" will change your view of the events of 9/11, and force you to question whether America now represents the greatest hope for mankind, or the greatest danger.
The oddest part of this book was not how bizarre the claims within rather how a fifth of it was actually incredibly good. But then in justifying my one star rating the entire book itself was really just five books mashed together each with their own theses that conflict with each other and the one star rating actually represents a (slight) measure of praise. For purposes at hand I divide them thus: 1.) Questions regarding the "official narrative" of the 9/11 attacks. 2.) 9/11 was an inside job coordinated meticulously by elected and un-elected elements within United States Government. 3.) Loosely related (but in my mind completely separate from) Book the Second is that 9/11 was perpetrated by Al Qaeda but then consciously allowed to happen by the United States Government or government(s). 4.) Foreign government(s) (namely Israel and or Saudi Arabia) directly sponsored 9/11. 5.) A current analysis of the crumbling American Political system. Anyone even remotely aware of the so-called Truther Movement has largely read the first portion in toto at least a thousand times already: 'Jet fuel can't melt steel,' 'WTC 7 collapsing,' 'Flight 93 shot down?'... I don't feel the need to comment in depth on matters which to me have been adequately explained. Suffice it to say that I am simply familiar with the claims and do not buy them. Skipping ahead the Fourth part actually does have some merit regarding Saudi involvement at least. Anthony Summers deduced that very likely the redacted portions of the 9/11 Commission were related to ties drawn between the Saudi Government and the hijackers. I have seen no similar tangible proofs regarding Israel however. The second and the third however contradict each other and therein lies one of the problems I have with this book. The second book identifies Mohammed Atta and comrades as patsies or dupes shadowed by U.S. Intelligence Agencies who were nonetheless far too incompetent to actually manage to evade American military might on its own home turf much less even no how to fly a plane. Evidence that Osama bin Laden never claimed credit for the attacks, and indeed denied involvement. Evidence of advance warning being given to intimates of the Bush administration. Evidence that the military industrial complex employed its advanced technology to remotely pilot aircraft into buildings all to spur on some very profitable wars at the behest of members of that same Bush Administration. The third book very suddenly begins by acknowledging that Al Qaeda was most definitely a terrorist organization and had been sending men to commit a major terrorist attack on U.S. soil. One of these men Grundy identifies as the same Mohammed Atta (previously too incompetent) who is now an extremely dangerous man put on the terrorist watch list, having been seen in Germany with a model of the Pentagon, and frequently alluding to specific terrorist activities in day to day life. These warnings are then cabled to the appropriate powers in Washington (or Crawford, Texas as it were) where nothing is done about them. While I can't say I believe the claims made by the Truthers, if I were to entertain them for just a moment, I would find this portion plausible. There remains a firm list of instances whereby authorities were directly warned in advance and in writing of the possibility of an attack. I would say that this represents either a cynical move by the Bush administration to exploit the sheer possibility of a national tragedy or these warnings represents supreme incompetence-the moment at which it can be definitively proven that Corruption had now become the biggest branch of government. Ironically the final portion of this book seems to endorse the latter and proves the best part of this book. Grundy considers 9/11 to be the Rubicon of our Republic when America began its drift to outright fascism. Wars are, he argues, no longer there to be won-rather they serve as a constant preoccupation for a bloated military and defence budget to operate wherever the most profit is to be had that also just so happens to be at home as easily as abroad. Accountability doesn't matter since these entities aren't elected anyway and besides ineptitude profits the system. The innumerable errors of the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns performed at the highest levels of the Bush administration that Grundy acknowledges also works to exculpate the same Bush administration from consideration in the plotting or carrying out of 9/11. If they had actually planned and carried out the attacks I doubt they would have made off nearly as well as they have already in simply exploiting them. The tragedy is, as Grundy correctly notes, the rise of an American brand of fascism powered by the militarism brought about by 9/11, and the economic policies benefiting the few over the many. Where Grundy is wrong is in claiming anymore than this. Though I don't agree with his alternative conspiracies regarding 9/11-even if I did I would still disagree that knowing the intricacies of the conspiracy would in any way offset what has already been done. If, tomorrow, we were given a hypothetical document detailing the placement of thermite charges within the World Trade Centers signed off by Dick Cheney the powers that be would simply smirk and carry on.
I recieved a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, but the thing is, you can't really review a novel like this. It all boils down to what you believe. Does it offer valid points? It does, but there are always those who's minds can't be changed, or refuse to be changed. The hardest sell here is to those without open minds. Those believe the official story that we got about 9/11. Were we lied to? It's quite possible, but trying to convince people is the hard part.
Death of a Nation raises some valid questions, and it makes a lot of sense, but I can't say the book is true. George has certainly done his homework and as I read it I could see myself buying into what he's saying. Problem is, there's tons of books just like this, and for every book, there's a crowd of people shouting at us telling us we're wrong. There's no way to review this without looking at both sides. I want to believe the official story, but the more I read, the less I can say I believe the official story.
This isn't a book for crackpots, or people who are deluded. It's a look at what could have happened. Whether or not you believe it, is entirely up to you. That's what I enjoyed about the book. You're allowed to think the way you want. It doesn't matter, and no one is forcing you into believing George's account. It's totally plausible because it makes sense. Would our government lie to us? Of course they would, and that's what makes this book so scary. it's the idea that the goverment we support, and have the utmost respect for would lie to us.
Death of a Nation is a book you read without blinders, you can bring your own beliefs into it, but what happens when you start to see something different? What happens when the the facts don't add up? That' s what makes this book so good. You can try and complain about it, give it bad reviews in hopes that it will somehow go away, but it won't. There's a reason why books like these keep coming out. The question is will you just ignore, or will you read it, and see someone else's view point?
Death of a Nation: 9/11 and the Rise of Fascism in America by George W. Grundy is a scathing account of the events leading to 9/11, the events of the day and the aftermath. Mr. Grundy argues that the events of 9/11 have been falsely portrayed. His premise is that the attacks were carried out by entities within the U.S. government and the military. Everything from the wars in the Middle East to the rise of ISIS to the election of Donald Trump. He discusses the timeline of 9/11 and the inaction of individuals and inconsistency in the statements made in the days following the tragedy. He asserts that the World Trade Center was a controlled demolition. The main premise is how the US government reacted with wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Patriot Act and Guantanamo Bay all have led to fascism in America. He asserts that anyone who believes the official report and that the government had no part in the 9/11 terrorist attack is blind. I don’t know anyone who truly believes that the government tells the American public the truth. There never really has been transparency in government (even though some may have tried). It reminds of a line from the movie, Tommy Boy (1995), Ray Zalinsky (played by Dan Aykroyd) says “What the American public doesn't know is what makes them the American public.” Some of the American didn’t want to know. The grief and shock of watching the events unfold overwhelmed them that they didn’t pay attention to what happened afterword. While I do not agree with all of Mr. Grundy’s assertions and many of his assertions sound a lot like conspiracy theories, however; he does bring up valid points and shows the lasting effects of that horrible day. I recommend this book for those who are interested in reading an in-depth analysis of a day many of us cannot forget.
Death of a Nation: 9/11 and the Rise of Fascism in American is available on Amazon in hardcover and on the Kindle
Too scary and depressing to finish reading... I can keep an open mind about news I hear and take much of it with a grain of salt... But this was just a tad too much for me. I skimmed, truthfully, maybe someday I'll take another look, just not right now. The times we're living in are just too bizarre for words.
Death of a Nation by George W. Grundy I found it to be a very hard long book to read. Yes, it happened and I'm glad there's books out there to read and we Don't forget what happened on that awful day. However, I found it So long winded and just went on and on. If the book had less pages and was condensed down it would of been a better read!
