Leading Through the Turn: How a Journey Mindset Can Help Leaders Find Success and Significance

Rate this book
THE JOURNEY MATTERS AS MUCH AS THE DESTINATION.
Scrap the map and go full throttle. Most leadership books tell you how to set and achieve goals. This one is different. This one is written by a communications leader who’s as passionate about riding motorcycles as she is about running her business. Her name is Elise Mitchell, and she wants to tell you about her journey―from starting her own agency to building a world-class brand to enjoying the ride along the way. But mostly, she wants to talk to you about your journey… Ask WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO?
Pick a destination. Not just for your career, but for your life. Answer HOW DO YOU PLAN TO GET THERE?
Look at the road ahead. Then plot your course.
But be prepared for some major twists, turns, and detours. Most ARE YOU ENJOYING THE JOURNEY?
If not, maybe you need to throw away the map. Restart your engine.
And get ready for the ride of your life. Whether you’re just stepping into leadership an accomplished leader seeking something more, or simply stalled along the way, Mitchell’s refreshing approach to modern leadership will help you navigate the curves and pit stops on your own path to fulfillment. You don’t need a motorcycle. You just need to get revved up for the road ahead.

Elise Mitchell is one of the most inspiring leader I’ve met. She’s energetic, empowering, open and welcoming. Having been a PR professional, she’s also an exceptional story-teller.
This book is about Elise's journey comparing to her favorite sport, motorcycling. Very interesting story well told, from the dawn of her career and the rise of Mitchell Communications, one of the fastest growing PR agencies in the US, to its expanding the horizon by joining bigger agency group, Dentsu and Dentsu Aegis. The journey has not always been straight and smooth but long, meandering, and sometimes bumpy and challenging.
This book is useful and practical as a guide to learn leadership with a wrap-up and takeaways from each chapter. But I’d say the cream of this book is all these vivid stories she told not only about herself but also a lot of various lines of people she met through her journey; it's a gem.

Elise Mitchell was the keynote speaker at a small PR conference that I attended, and we all received her book. When she spoke, she described how she had spent most of her career focused on only the destination, not the journey, and in recent years she had begun to change that. The book was supposed to describe lessons she learned through that shift, but it comes across as if she focused on both the journey and the destination the whole time. The disconnect was distracting and disappointing for me. Maybe someone with different expectations would enjoy it more.
