When insecure sophomore Emma gets a part-time job, she’s thrilled. The job is a six-week-long project where she’ll be coding a website for a martial arts studio. For Emma, a computer science major, it’s perfect—a great way to gain some real-world experience. But her excitement quickly evaporates when she finds out that her boss is Ryan Damon, the mean, arrogant guy she has slammed into, twice.

Ryan Damon, the son of the famous, late movie star Bruce Damon, suffered a great tragedy at the age of seventeen. When he was vacationing in Europe, a schizophrenic man, who had been hearing voices in his head telling him to kill Bruce Damon, broke into the Damons’ residency in Manhattan, New York, and murdered Ryan’s father, his mother, and his ten-year-old sister. Now, with his heart cold as ice, Ryan doesn’t let anyone in. But when Emma enters his life, everything changes—for both of them.

description

Sometimes the book gods are smiling on me when I'm introduced to a new author. To think that this is the first book by Helen Bell is just ... astonishing. This is one of the best books I've read this year!

I absolutely adored the main character, Emma. She's this shy and closed-off college girl that has a super sharp tongue and she will flay you with a simple sentence. Well, she would if she weren't terrified. You get to go on this journey of self-awareness and discovery with Emma as she learns to trust others and more importantly, herself. And her boss ... Ryan ... this dude is a tad bit infuriating with all of his crass comments and crude behavior but he just doesn't care what others think. He's going to do what he's going to do and if you don't like it, you can just go somewhere else. I didn't really like him at first until he started going caveman and saying "you're mine" and then I forgot that he irritated me and I just wanted her to be his. For some reason that possessiveness is sexy as hell. This isn't like boiling bunny kind of possessiveness ... it's the sexy kind that makes you wish YOU were part of the story.

I could go on and on about Ryan and Emma but more important than the characters is the story. Going into a book by a new author, you just really don't know what to expect. This is going to sound horrible but I really didn't expect the story to have so many facets to it. I really thought that this was going to be a straight romance novel but it's so much more than that. The story takes you through the past of both Ryan and Emma and the horrors that are lurking in the distance. I didn't expect the small doses of suspense at all. That was a nice surprise! There were quite a few massive twists that came out of no where and really threw me for a loop. Because of that, I read this book in one day. I just couldn't put it down. I'm already ready to read it again.

There was one extremely tiny issue I had with the book and the only reason I bring it up is because I took the time to jot a note down when I was reading and that means it bothered me to some extent. Emma is in college, she lives in a dorm and all of the girls that she knows have names that end in the sound 'ah' ... Kayla, Hannah, Jenna, Mia and then Emma and I think there were some more but anyway ... for some reason, that rubbed me the wrong way. Why? Who freaking knows. Maybe it was because they sounded the same or maybe it's because I have a screw loose ... there's no telling. It is what it is.

So. Great book, AMAZING new author and just an overall awesome reading experience. I can't wait to see what Bell has in store for her next novel ... there better be a next novel and I have no doubt that I'll be a big fan when it comes out. You just really need to read this one.

++some spoilers++

I didn't really understand the chemistry between the two MCs. It seemed like all of a sudden this guy just likes her. For no reason that I could see. I did enjoy how Emma gains her confidence and that it wasn't because a hot guy likes her. Ryan would confront her with truths that helped change her viewpoint. Emma seemed a bit flat and monotonous emotionally but she was more of a real person to me as opposed to...Ryan: Super caliente college student that made his millions before 19, major song-writer and kung fu fighter. Don't forget his tortured soul.

The main reason I kept knocking off the stars is because this had a plot device I hate: when person A assumes persons B's thoughts and because person A loves person B so much he or she must break up with him or her. Then the next plot device I hate happened: the "cruel to be kind" break-up. I hate the inner monologue of, "my true love must think such-and-such about me so I must end our true love because my true love deserves better. Therefore I will end our true love in the meanest way I can so they will hate me and ultimately move on. Because true love."

No. You need to grow a pair (ovaries or balls - whatever applies) and talk to your partner, you nitwit. Oh, the frustration.

There were minor things that kept niggling at the back of my mind while I read this and I think it just became a low level buzz of discontent until the last half. Then when my romance pet peeves showed up I just didn't have the patience.

I usually add books to read because the blurb is interesting, but it often happens that when I finally read them, they don't live up to my expectations. This book was different, though.

"A Rose by Any Other Name..." is a contemporary romance book who is told from the perspective of Emma Winstead, a sophomore at University who is really clumsy that she often bumps into people by accident, including Ryan Damon, a popular guy in the campus because he is the son of a famous actor who was killed along with his daughter and wife a lot of years ago. Emma has to code a website for him, and the two meet often at his house and slowly bond and heal each other.

I read this book in a day and half. I started reading it in the train while I was going somewhere, then read some more to the point that I couldn't stop. It is super flowing and written nicely, that I had to finish it soon because I turned a page and the following begged to for me to continue. It is a complicated love story but simple at the same time.

Emma is a very relatable character. She is the classic introvert with low self esteem who isn't friends with everybody. Her actions were quite realistic as she pondered her thoughts in the book, though I did not agree with one abrupt choice she makes towards the end of the book, but I saw where she was coming from.

Ryan is also very human and at times stubborn, he believes the worst of himself but in the end he is such a sweetheart. He often comes to help Emma to stand up for herself, although perhaps he is possessive (but in a good way). I completely fell head over heels for him, everyone should have a Ryan Damon in their lives.

Besides the budding romance between the protagonists, the author talked about various themes in her book and I feel that she was able to give a nice input on some problems that still exist in campuses around the world, bullying, obsessions, scandals etc. in a realistic way, although I ask myself - is bullying really that extreme in the USA? Because I am not American and over here there sure are bullies but they do not go beyond some limits besides some rare cases.

If you prefer a love story that starts off slowly and the layers of the characters are peeled off once at time but they are not predictable, then this is the book for you.

A lovely coming of age romance following dorky Emma, computer whizz extraordinaire, as she works her magic on millionaire Ryan's website. Both still in college Ryan has quite the following, an endless supply of willing girls, fame, fortune and a completely fake lifestyle. After a few false starts Emma and Ryan soon become firm friends and one thing leads to another and before we know it, love blossoms. But, all is not as it seems and it would appear that Ryan is hiding a few deep dark secrets. Maybe he's not the boy that Emma thought he was. Lots happening in this story to keep me interested. I occasionally felt as if parts of the story were a bit rushed and stilted but overall I enjoyed the story. I was gifted a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Read this entire book without feeling much of a connection to either main character. I liked Emma okay, but she wasn't a person I'd want to know. I thought Ryan was a total prick at the beginning of the story. He improved as it went along, but I really felt the connection between the two was forced. It did seem to me like he was treating her as a charity case, not as someone he was in love with. I also felt that there were too many story lines going on, but yet it still dragged at times. I did have to know how it ended, so that is a major plus for the book. I couldn't put it down and walk away. I did pretty much read it straight through.

Overall this book was really good. I wasn't as engrossed in the beginning but as I got a little further into the book I just had to keep reading. Honestly in the beginning I was confused but don't worry, as you keep reading everything is explained and you just want to keep reading to see what happens. The main character Emma is especially relatable and real. Be warned that as you get to the end you cannot put it down because things get a little crazy.

Ok, I gotta be really sincere here. The first chapters of the book made me cringe more times than I can count. I mean, Emma please how clumsy can you get? Her lack of maturity made me think I was reading a bad YA book instead of a NA. But that's just the beauty of it. I am ashamed to say I did think of stopping and not reading it any more and I'm so SO glad I just kept going.
This is one of those rare books where you can really see the characters grow up.
I think we've all been through traumatic events (some more than others) that left us thinking we didn't deserve to achieve that one thing or that we simply weren't worth the trouble. NO. STOP. YOU F*CKING DESERVE ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING, you are your own executioner. So to see Emma walk that path which we more often than not choose to ignore, agh! What can I say? You go Emma! I am so proud of you girl!
And Ryan. Oh Ryan. I just love how patient and persistent he is. Being able to show her she deserves more than she is getting and that no one, not even you, have the right to think of yourself worthless and watching him learn how to care again *enter drooling smiley face here*. Plus the fact that he is a real hottie doesn´t hurt either. Man you are my new bobofriend (book boyfriend ~> please don't judge I came up with that term when I was 14).
Though I was teased with Ryan's point of view (just on the prologue and not an alternation between both of the main character's like I was hoping) I'll say I really liked this book. It has a great depth to it, more than the eye can see --> or in this case more than the first chapters show.
If you liked Touch Me Not by Apryl Baker you'll definitely like this one too. And if you didn't read it, please just do it now.
I highly recommend this book and I am defenitely going to keep up with this author.
So overall is 3.5 stars. Well developed characters, interesting story and a fun, sweet read.

Title: A Rose By Any Other Name
Series: Standalone
Author: Helen Bell
HEA:
Rating: 4.25 Stars
“It was just too bad for her that after I was done with her, she'd end up soulless. Like me.”

The book was almost everything I usually look for in a collage romance and I enjoyed it a lot. Also, love the title a lot, and how it connects to the story.

Emma
At first I wasn't sure about her, because I thought she'll be a weak heroine, a damsel in distress, afraid to express her opinion but throughout the book, I definitely changed my mind. I still have some issues with Emma but I did come to like her character.
Two hands steadied me, and they weren't Kyle's. “Yo man, we were dancing,” Kyle protested behind me.
“Exactly. Past tense. Glad we're on the same page here.” Recognizing Ryan's voice, my head snapped up. He wore a subtle smile, but his expression let Kyle know that he really didn't want to find himself on a different page.

Ryan
I knew I'd love his character from the start, and I did. Despite his attitude towards Emma at the beginning, I enjoyed his protective, caring and possessive side. It was a nice change and since Emma didn't have a lot of people to care for her, Ryan was perfect for it.

The plot was pretty good even though I didn't find it original. I wish I wouldn't have read the blurb though, or at least the second paragraph before starting the book as I knew way too much for my liking about Ryan and I would have preferred to find everything out throughout the book. Also, the prologue was a bit confusing and I think it could have been written a bit differently.

This new adult romance follows Emma, a girl lacking confidence due to trauma from her past, and Ryan, a young millionaire with a few dark secrets of his own. The plot begins as you would expect from a romance between two college-aged kids, and rapidly spirals into more and more drama as the backstories are revealed. I thought Emma and Ryan had great chemistry together. The author uses some higher diction, and the actions of the characters are well-explained so the reader understands why everyone does what they do. There were tons of side characters, and plenty of room left for a sequel or spin off (Hannah x Nate anyone?).
A couple small things kept me from giving this book 5/5. The beginning was slow and most of the action was concentrated near the end. Also, Ryan seemingly had a more difficult past than Emma yet he was constantly comforting her, even after she hurt him time and time again. Don't get me wrong, it made for a swoon-worthy leading man, but I wanted her to cut him a break, even just a little bit!
All in all, this was a nice book. Not perfect, but the minor flaws should not discourage anyone from reading it. If you're thinking of reading this one, definitely give it a shot!

(I received an ARC from the author for an honest and unbiased review)

This is the first book I have read by Helen and I guess its her first, so I went into it with an open mind. Its a story about a "good" girl named Emma, with whom I can identify in some ways, and a not-so-bad, bad boy Ryan and their relationship which develops throughout the book in an easy flowing way.
The book is well written, grammatically, which I always need, to be able to get into a book.
Its kinda your typical NA novel but it doesn't bore you. Even though I identified the 'mystery' right in the beginning of the story, it didn't deter me from finishing the book.
There were times when I was a little peeved, situations I thought could have been avoided if the hero and the heroine had been a bit forthcoming but then again, those scenarios added to the plot.
If you are a fan of clichéd NA books that are well written, you'd love this one. But if you are looking for a more "reality" based stuff, this book might not be for you.
I love me some cheesy but nonetheless good NA from time to time and I am happy that I stumbled upon this one.
Happy Reading.

I loved this book!! This book is not just a love story, but a story about revenge. Emma is a college student who just wants to be invisible after suffering a horrible trauma early on in life only to be severely bullied in high school she's just content to skirt through life without being noticed due to her severe self esteem issues. She believed everyone had ulterior motives for wanting to be around her until she met Ryan. Ryan has his own issues due to a very traumatic childhood. What starts out as a game (with Emma being the pawn) turns to friendship then a great love!!!! He gives her the courage and strength she needs to
Not be a punishing bag anymore and realize she is so very special & she gives him the thing he needs most in this world love!! There is twists and turns in this book that you will love. This is a book were two unlikely people overcome there past to move together to forge a better future built on pure love!!

This book started out as any other typical NA book. The hot bad boy meets the quirky plain Jane and all of a sudden wants to become a one woman man. But...a few chapters in, I realized that this story was anything but typical and I couldn't put it down. Emma and Ryan both come from very traumatic childhoods. When they wind up at the same collge, Emma literally runs into Ryan a few times, and then she just happens to land a job working for him. They become friends and eventually a relationship develops. As we get deeper into the story we see that their paths crossing may not just be a coincidence. I can't say any more without dropping a few spoilers but this book is filled with quite a few surprises and twists.

There will be a few instances in the story where you'll want to shake some sense into Emma but don't worry, her character does develop quite a bit throughout the story. And bad boy Ryan's growth and patience lands him on my list of best book boyfriends. There were a few typos but they didn't distract me from the story at all.

Where to begin... This book had me from the start! The first chapter captures you by foreshadowing what is going to happen later in the story with Ryan. We meet Emma, who is super clumsy, shy , and has no confidence, unless she gets angry. Being a computer science major she gets a job coding a new martial arts website for a very cocky, cold hearted, anti relationship, but extremely handsome man, Ryan. As Ryan and Emma spend more time together Ryan and Emma bond over troubled pasts; with Ryan losing his family and Emma being bullied all through high school. The ice around Ryan's heart starts to melt, but Emma is scared that she will get her heart broken. When they both decide to take a chance on love tragedies from their past come back with a vengeance. After weeks of separation Emma and Ryan find they way back to each other for a HEA!

This book was so good and will be put on my to read again list!!

I received this book in return for my honest review.

This book was refreshing in that it was not the typical NA romance. Although this book had a slightly slower start I soon found myself engrossed and completed this book in a few hours.

Emma, a young socially awkward college student find herself in her first part time job coding for a young, rich and emotionally damaged guy Ryan. Ryan, a young guy who has experience the most horrendous upbringing, manages to become everything he was told he'd never achieve.

The plot is good with several twists and surprises, and the author does include some heavier topics into the storyline. I especially enjoyed the chapters with Emma and Ryan's budding friendship.

I can't say too much else Without giving away the story, but I do highly recommend this book.

Well i thoroughly enjoyed this book!

It was slap-bang amazing! The characters were very relatable, the plot thickened perfectly as you went on and it never got to the point of ridiculous which you can sometimes find in books. It was all very realistic in terms of the storyline.

I have to say the main protagonists really were thought out and written well, they showcased the vulnerable side to people, but also an edge that kept you hooked.

I will definately be reading this again, and although i'm a sucker for series, i can see why this is a stand alone book. Everything happens, all together, perfectly sequenced and the ending ties it all up into that happy ending we all know and love.

Truly, well done!

I really was surprised by this book.It a debut and it was written quite well.
The story was what i really liked..a quite herione and a badboy/sexy hero..it was perfect combo. And to add the twists there were many elements and suspense in the story and i liked it.It was a gradual process and not a insta love.Yes at times there were a few predictable moments like H saving h at times of need, but it just made them more closer..I really hope there are more books in this series ,cos i really like Hannah and Ray's cousin who makes entry at end looks like a character i like to read too *hints*.
Definitely a recommend book!Rating:4 lovely rose stars!

I love a good strong and boy character that saves a damsel in distress. This book has it all. Ryan is clearly a man that knows what he wants and Emma is so sweet and innocent that you just want her for Ryan! She seems to always be getting into trouble and he is there to save her. I have never read a book from Ms. Bell but she will definitely be on my favorite authors page. I loved this book. The writing was wonderful and made me read the whole book in one sitting.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. so here it is.

This book starts like any other classic love story. A rich boy meets an uninteresting girl but falls for her eventually. but this book is much more than that. it has many more layers and reminded me a little of beautiful disaster in a good way. it is sweet, has just enough angst and drama. I liked both the lead characters. It is a very satisfying read.

I have to say, it took me a few days to read thru the first few chapters. I just wasn't too interested in the story line. Once I got thru that, I actually really enjoyed the book and went to bed after 2am so I could finish the rest if it. There are a few parts in the story that are a little unbelievable, but it is fiction, right? It definitely kept me wanting more (or I would've gone to bed at a reasonable time.)
