Just a bit of smoke…?

Here is a book for those interested in Wicca and New Age spirituality. Put simply, smudging is the use of smoke to cleans objects, people and places. The practice has been used by various ancient cultures, but is here modernized. The book has an energy/vibrational philosophy: basically the smoke of various herbs raises the energy to a higher level (reflecting love). Smudging can be used to rid a new home of its old 'ethos'. More specifically smudging can remove unwanted spirits (which according to the author are only energy anyway).

As you can see the topic is discussed quite extensively, and indeed at 132 pages this book probably tells you all you will ever want to know about the subject. You will certainly be ready to try smudging by the time you have read it (if not before). Although the ritual aspect of the process is quite involved, the author makes clear that you can set your own level (for example you don't have to say all the prayers). As in most modern spirituality it is the intention that counts: ritual can raise intention, but not everything needs it.

The book is very easy to read and there is no technical language or complex philosophies to get your head around. It is very practical (hands on), rather than theoretical. A number of chapters end with a "Frequently Asked Questions" section, and this is very useful in answering difficulties that may have occurred to you while reading.

I have been a solitary practitioner of Wicca for some years and it has been a bit of a learning curve finding out what others believe and do. As time goes on I evolve my own practice and this book added a new dimension to my ideas. I have always burned incense, but this book made me see that practice in a new deeper light. I am certainly glad I read the book and am happy to rate it as 5 stars.

This was a well-written, insightful book that gave me a lot of information on smudging. The topic itself intrigued me, but the best part of this book were all the different tools used in relations to Native Americans and the different stories told that Leeza had experienced.
