Callie and Luke have known each other for a little over a year now and have grown to be good friends, even if Luke is a moody bastard. She spends her time at Elixir (his bar) keeping him, his brother, and her best friend Avery company, while also scouting possible dates. Callie is in a dating/sex drought and is trying to find a man to occupy her time but while there is no literal shortage of men for her, there seems to be a shortage of decent men. It doesn't help that Luke stands by, looking the way he does, and she has to settle for his friendship. One day they throw caution to the wind and let their impulses get the best of them, promising it would not hurt the relationship they share. The problem is that once won't be enough but Luke has a lot of shit to sort through and he's not as eager to drag Callie down with him.
Callie, being as pushy and headstrong as she is, gives Luke the chance to sort through his shit but their chemistry builds and builds and there's no stopping where they are inevitably headed. Luke's got secrets at home that Callie couldn't have even imagined - starting with a sun and a soon-to-be-divorced wife who is in prison. Luke's home life is revelation after revelation and Callie may have bitten off more than she can chew but her attraction and pull to Luke outweighs it all. Turns out, things are not quite as "dealt with" as she thought and now it's her turn to go digging through the answers Luke seemed to be happy with.
I didn't mind this one. My biggest gripe was it being shelved on here as a romantic suspense but for 60% of the book, it felt like it was just sex and Callie and Luke trying to manage their lives in the same patterns. I love a good sex scene as much as the next romance reader but I would've liked to have seen more of the Jolene mystery and how we were going to unpack it all. There was absolutely no suspense at all. There was no motive revealed or anything satisfying about the case and Jolene could've quite literally not been in jail and just been a misunderstood wife than anything else. The twist wasn't necessary, at all.
Luke also wasn't that bossy? He just told her a couple of times to do a thing and Callie was like BOSSY LUKE BEIN BOSSY AGAIN HURHURHUR. I feel we were loosely using the word here. Like, sure. He bossed her around a couple of times. I don't think it warranted the "bossy Luke" though. IN BED? For sure. Maybe he was just soft boi bossy? I don't know man. Regardless, it was fine. Some of this felt superficial and convenient. I felt like we didn't really see the real version of these characters. The only relationships I really bought were between Luke and Sean and Callie and Avery.
I'm disappointed. This book has been on my TBR pile for a hot minute and I just was not feeling it as much as I'd hoped.
