The Second Oswald

Rate this book
Who killed Kennedy? Many keen minds have their doubts about the findings of the Warren Commission. Could Oswald have fired 3 shots in 5.6 seconds with the inaccurate rifle he had - and hit a moving target? Did he even kill patrolman Tippit (the bullets in the body were smaller than the barrel of his revolver)? Was the brown paper bag made only to attract attention? Was Bullet No. 399 a plant? Suppose there was a Second Oswald - a man very similar physically and an expert marksman? Such a man was seen both before and at the time of the murder. Was there a rifleman on the knoll as well as at the Book Depository window? If so this was one of the greatest - and most successful conspiracies of modern times... THE SECOND OSWALD has been called "the first plausible and significant argumentation on the Kennedy assassination." It takes into account the books by Edward J. Epstein, Mark Lane and Harold Weisberg. Too much was attempted too quickly. Professor Popkin believes that Lee Harvey Oswald may have been innocent and no more than a decoy in a plot to kill the President. His job may have been to divert suspicion and be arrested. A startling alternative to the 'Single Assassin' theory. For an author bio and photo, reviews and a reading sample, visit bosonbooks.com.

Professor Popkin's 1966 contribution to the early critics of the Warren Commission conclusions. Much like Sauvage, Joesten, Lane, Epstein and Weisberg, the learned professor of philosophy can't quite get his head around the lone nut verdict. Although Popkin left open the possibility of Oswald being some part of a conspiracy, he had enormous trouble accepting Arlen Specter's stupid magic bullet theory, as well as CE399.
After disputing many of the main Warren explanations, the author then sinks into the rabbit hole of the 'second oswalds'. A dark mysterious place indeed. Lee pops up at Dallas rifle ranges, gun shops, car dealerships, Cuban exiles houses, Mexican embassies etc. Mostly with the ability to be in two places at once and consistently making a loud nuisance of himself.
Actually my favourite 'second Oswald' was not discovered by Prof Popkin, but can be found in James W. Douglass's five star 'JFK & The Unspeakable', covering the frightening tale of Ralph Yates, who picked up a hitchhiker LHO lookalike in Dallas on the Wednesday 20th November '63, two days prior to the assassination, carrying a package of curtain rods! Yates's hiker was talking of JFK's visit and the possibility of shooting the president from a tall building. He dropped the man off on the corner of Houston and Elm, all this, while the 'real' LHO was gainfully employed inside the TSBD.
Another 'second Oswald', unknown to Popkin, is the story told by Air Force Sergeant Robert G. Vinson in the book 'Flight from Dallas'.
There are some interesting additions in the Appendix sections, particularly the FD-302 autopsy report from Sibert and O'Neill. However, the very last page of my Kindle edition has, without any explanation and any link to anything printed in the book, front and side photographs of Billy Lovelady. Why?
