Oni Press Pride Spectacular

Rate this book
Oni Press presents the Oni Press Pride Spectacular, featuring previews of three LGBT-friendly Oni Press titles.

The first is Merry Men, a historical retelling of the Robin Hood legend. Prince John has outlawed homosexuality in 13th century England. Robin and his band of merry men live in Sherwood Forest, far from John's watchful eye. Though isolated, the men live in peace–that is, until a stranger approaches their camp asking for aid to a nearby town under siege by the Sheriff of Nottingham.

The second is Wet Moon, the graphic novel series by Jem and the Hologram artist Sophie Campbell! An unusually usual day-to-day story in the Deep South, set in the gothic, swampy southern town of Wet Moon, a place fraught with lousy love lives, teen angst, and shadowy rednecks.

And the third is a sneak peek of Katie O'Neill's Princess Princess Ever After, available this September! Join Sadie and Amira, two very different princesses with very different strengths, on their journey to figure out what "happily ever after" really means--and how they can find it with each other.

About the author

Robert Rodi

210 books124 followers
Robert was born in Chicago in the conformist 1950s, grew up in the insurrectionist 1960s, came of age in the hedonist 1970s, and went to work in the elitist 1980s. This roller-coaster ride has left him with a distinct aversion to isms of any kind; it also gave him an ear for hypocrisy, cant, and platitudes that allowed him, in the 1990s, to become a much-lauded social satirist.

After seven acclaimed novels set in the gay milieu, Robert grew restless for new challenges — which he found in activities as wide-ranging as publishing nonfiction, writing comic books, launching a literary-criticism blog, and taking to the stage (as a spoken-word performer, jazz singer, and rock-and-roll front man).

In 2011, excited by the rise of digital e-books, he returned to his first love, publishing new fiction inspired by the work of Alfred Hitchcock. He also organized the republishing of his seminal gay novels under the banner Robert Rodi Essentials.

Robert still resides in Chicago, in a century-old Queen Anne house with his partner Jeffrey Smith and a constantly shifting number of dogs.

I gotta be honest here and admit that this comic book is one of the worst comic books I’ve read so far in my life and thats saying something because I read quiet a few handful of very bad comic books in my time.

This comic book had the potential to be very good and enjoyable. But after all it wasn’t, because this comic book feels very disjointed and lacks the emotional resonance.

At the same time this comic book has a narrative lacks the cohesion necessary to engage us as readers in a way that would make us want more rather than closing this comic book as fast as possible.

The writing style in this comic book feels very superficial and cliché at times which made me really annoyed at times while reading this comic book.

The stories in this comic book are very rushed and underdeveloped, which leaves little room for character growth or genuine connection. Which in my opinion is never good thing.

The artwork in this comic book, is good enough for me but it lacks to compensate for the weak storytelling which this comic book gives us.

The visuals in this comic book do little to elevate the material or bring the characters to life in a compelling way.

I didn't realize this only previewed three comics and wasn't actually the full stories. I've read and reviewed Princess Princess Ever After, so I won't say much on that other than how cute and charming it is. Merry Men seemed interesting, though I don't think it is something I would pick up. Wet Moon was interesting but I didn't fully understand what was going on or click with it entirely. All in all this wasn't what I was expecting.
