Sugar and spice and everything nice, may be what some girls are made of.
Katherine Anne Teresa Brun is not one of those girls.
Katherine was raised doing what she was told, and playing it safe…most of the time. With a strong love for a book she received as a gift, Alice in Wonderland, she lives her life believing that everything is nonsensical, thus making it impossible to ‘fit in’ with others. She doesn’t care.
After attending an all girl catholic school and living her life with an over exuberant, overprotective, overbearing mother, Katherine is heading to college. Out from under her mother, and ‘father’s’ rule she can finally live life… on her own terms.
Her very first day as a college freshman, at Harvard University, Katherine decides to throw caution to the wind, and her ever-unsocial self goes out to play.
MJ Fields is a USA Today bestselling author of contemporary romance novels. She lives in New York with her daughter Miss A, smoochie faced Newfie, Theo and the newest member to the 'fields crew, rescue diva / holy terror Eleanor. When she’s not locked away in the cave, she enjoys doing home improvement projects, spending time with her family, attending live music and sporting events, the theatre, singing off key, dancing to her own beat, listening to audio books, and reading of course.
I read this novella at the start of book 1 in the UnSocial Dater series. You don't need to read this for the series, but it will set the series up nicely for you and will give you more answers to Kat's personality. Or more specifically, why Kat is not a relationship type of girl. And a bit about her background as well.
This book starts with a young 18 year old Katherine being dropped off at Harvard for the start of her University years. She meets her roommates, Cecilia and Josie, and they decide the best way to get to know each other is to check out the local bar and also local talent! They are drunk, dancing and having a ball, which is what college is all about right?!! This first semester has its trials and tribulations for Kat, but even though she is the unsociable one, she knows she can rely on these girls.
This is a fun, quick read with some good LOL moments, but also a part where you just want to kick some butt! In my opinion, go for it!
This was a fast paced but really interesting read. A lot happens in this novella, in fact it quite clever just how much happened without me even realising it wasn't a full length novel.
Kat is a very interesting character and I loved all the catholic references like 'making room for Jesus.'
I loved the relationship between Kat & Owen until that moment I didn't. Maybe we will catch up with him again in future books?
So yeah, easy to read, lots of fun and onto the next book :)
This was an enjoyable read. I loved how unfiltered Kat was, and how open she was about everything. Owen, I didn't like as much - since I don't like liars and cheaters. I did - however - love how she told him off at the poetry slam. I just wish it had last long enough to see his reaction.
There was a lot of punctuation errors in this. No, it being a free book on Amazon does not excuse that.
I also disliked the constant usage of the term "Southern kitty" to refer to her womanly parts.
Couldn't put this book down..With lines like, "Mom would be proud, I'm making room for Jesus" and "Southern kitty" This book made me laugh and then hurt my heart. So glad I already purchased book 2!!
This is a prequel to Match This! and it can be found at the very beginning of the book. It follows Kat's arrival and first semester at Harvard and what will be a turning point in her life.
Fantastic fun quickie. Kat knows what she wants in life and accepts nothing less and nothing more; until she does. Its fun sweet and hot to read, until she finds out why you should stick to your guns and go with your gut.
MJ Fields never fails to amaze me. No matter the content she decides to tackle it always turns out brilliant. Unsocially Yours is no exception. How do you improve upon literary genius? No, really. This is a serious question. I ask because time and time again MJ does it with each new piece that she writes, this one included.
Unsocially Yours is about a rite of passage if you will. That voyage a young person takes venturing from high school into the unchartered territory of college. Kat has always played it safe. She's one of those girls much like myself that sticks to her guns and does things her way. Well things change when you go to college peer pressure becomes more of an issue in social settings. Things happen, life happens. Circumstances change. Kat finds herself in a precarious situation and in a hot and steamy romance. But, when things go awry . . . how is she going to handle it? Well, that's the lovely part we get to find out in the next installment.
I really love the perspective that MJ Fields gives Kat in Unsocially Yours. She's not your typical woo-girl that you find in a sorority cheering on the campus jock who's looking to score with every Tom, Dick, and Harry. She really is your normal unsocial teen who is looking to get through life without the drama. Much like most of us tend to do. She is someone that most of us can relate to. This little prequel will give you all the feels and have you all up in arms. (Calm yourself ladies and gents.) Not in a bad way . . . Well, not all in a bad way. It gives us perspective. This was designed to give us a glimpse inside of Kat's life and her head to help us to understand how she works and how she thinks. And it does just that.
Honestly, it just goes to show how down to earth this amazing author is and how connected she is with the real world. I bow down to the masterful genius you are and can't wait to start the next chapter in this great adventure.
Unsocially yours is a brilliant book about a young girls journey into adult hood. She ventures away from home after high school going to college. She's always played it fairly safe done what she needed to do and that was that. No emotion needed she sticks to her guns and she's good to go. Yet as she attends college she finds herself out of her comfort zone. Meeting someone who actually makes her feel and question things. Until she realizes he isn't who he seems.
This really is a great look into a young girls life. I mean let's be realistic for a moment not all girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice. Kat has an attitude so many of us do. There are plenty of women out there that are just like Kat (myself included) that can carry that F-off attitude and we wear it like a badge of honor. Fields did a fantastic job of making this character relatable someone we could all envision if you will. The real world scenarios that she builds into this storyline add to the relate-ability factor and allow you to picture what Kat goes through. Especially considering a majority of us have gone through this at some point in our lives.
Fields gives us perspective she makes us take a step back and look at things through a new pair of lenses. And after you're finished reading this prequel you'll honestly be blown away with the depth of her wisdom. I know I was. I'd love nothing more than to grab a drink and pick her brain for a while.
Falling... falling... falling down a rabbit hole! What happens to an unsocial young lady who is not willing to go with the flow or mix with the crowd, enters one of the most prestigeous universities and accidentally falls face first for someone who should be off-limits? Katherine is NOT your everyday girl... she is feisty, closed off, of few words but battling a demon she is unaware of. This novella will have you begging for much more... 5 "Unsocially Yours" Stars to MJ Fields for a story that had my mouth falling to the floor!
This was a cute short novella to meet Kat. Find out what goes on behind her to make her tick. I enjoyed her nonsense attitude and how she basically says screw the world. Meeting her roommates is great. I like how the author threw three random strangers into a pot and they joined forces together.
This is a quickie novella to go along with Match This! I have to say that I was completely drawn into the story after reading this. Actually read Match This the same day as well. The characters are really interesting and I'm wondering what took me so long to read an MJ Fields book! I'm definitely hooked.
Kat and Owens relationship is interesting from the beginning, but what happen when you fall head over heels and then find him head under heels with another woman? Kat is a force to be reckoned with, watch out Owen
This is not book 1.5, it's really .5 however when you start reading Match This, is actually starts with Unsocially Yours. So no need to buy this book if you have book 1.
Short story about introducing Kat and her character... it doesn't explain her behaviour and her attitude but it does give an insight about what the next books will be like.
Don't let the size fool you. Even as a novella, Unsocially Yours by M.J. Fields is full of information. It tells a very complete, compelling, and tragic story. It is well written and funny.
