Eli is not your average witch, he is a member of a group of elite trained warriors fighting evil entities that torment the non-magical world.
However, when one of their leaders is murdered, questions are raised and an ancient foe of Dark Witches, who was previously thought to be long gone, reappears. It will take all their abilities to defeat this enemy with the possible help of an unlikely ally.
Knowing the past will lead them to unexpected revelation which erupts into a battle unlike any other. Eli is about to discover all is not as it seems and life has plenty of tricks up its sleeve.
In Forest of Ancestors, the first book of The Guardians series, K.A. Denver weaves magic, romance and betrayal into a thrilling fantasy with a contemporary flare.
I am a wife, and a mom to two kids and two furbabies. I have always loved to write and have many short stories hidden away from when I was a teenager. It wasn't until after submitting a short story in a Blog takeover event, that I decided to take my writing one step further. My short story was so well received that I continued it and turned it into my first novel, FOREST OF ANCESTORS, The Guardians Series.
Eli is a witch who recently lost his girl and has thrown himself in his work, dispatching evil spirts from this physical world. Just one problem, as of late, these evil spirits seem to have become stronger, viler, and capable of physical damage as evidenced by the slashes across his torso.
Author Denver teases us with some fantastic action, but then makes us wait for much of the story, slowly building to an epic climatic clash that leaves a path of death and destruction. In between, we get to follow Eli – who’s not only dealing with increasingly dreadful entities, but more significantly, a stunning ex-girlfriend that left him heartbroken. We steadily learn more about not only Eli, but also his coven and its history.
Denver does a magical job in making the fantastic seem every day. We take time to meet Eli’s buddies, witches as well – just don’t call them warlocks, it’s an insult, translates to oath breaker. It’s these kinds of little touches that build out the world of the Guardians. While developing the characters and exploring the history of the coven, Denver does a good job of establishing some solid intrigue. Who is behind this gathering evil?
This is a great setup what will clearly be an action-packed, character driven fantasy series. Denver lays the ground work for book two, but does it in an entertaining, mystical manner that delivers a satisfying fireball punch of action to end the first story. I flew through the 293 pages quickly and it felt a bit short, largely because Denver leaves you looking for the next book. Bookended by action, this fantasy will leave you wanting more.
I love to read anything that has witches. It’s pretty rare I find something in this theme with male leads, that in itself captivated me. I was instantly drawn in by Eli and his friends, coven mates, guardians. Plus, the familiar Parker, was absolutely adorable. The word they populate is rich, with a history that enthralled me. I am totally down for more in this world and more Eli of course. Did I mention that he, in addition to being a powerful witch, is genuine good guy, and so swoony?
The story itself is as fascinating as the characters. There are a lot of threads all linked to the past that is about to come back and wreak havoc on the coven. It moves at a rapid pace, exciting and dangerous, yet there is a lightness between the characters that keeps it from being too dark or heavy. I especially loved Alex and her ability to hold her own with both the men, and the magic swirling around her.
The beautiful style, rich description, and creative storytelling make this a home run. Fans of magic, witches, thrillers, urban fantasy should simply adore this story. I am eagerly awaiting the next part.
Eli, Eli, Eli...This was an awesome ride! What I adored most about this was the incredible character development of a male protag (ELI) that comes off the pages as genuine, unique and in many cases hilarious. It takes a lot for me to even bother with a male POV story, especially when written by a female author, but this was convincing and Eli quickly morphed to the top of my book boyfriend list. He's hilarious, his voice is strong. The witchcraft in this one was also well done, almost as if the author herself delves, and the writing was clean, the setting dark and delicious.
The story starts off strong, intriguing, and then keeps going at the perfect edge of my seat pace. Nothing is held back as the warrior witches come up against a dark coven and secrets are revealed and dangled above my head, so now I am frantic, waiting for the next book.
I enjoyed this tale of brotherhood between Eli and his closest of friends. K. A. Denver has weaved a magical tale in our own world. It's incredibly well written and the story flows smoothly.
Eli is a witch, I honestly would have preferred the men to be called warlocks but there is a reason given in the story for why they are called witches. Still irks me to some level, but I am not that clued up on Witches, Warlocks, druids etc. Now brace for a few spoilers.
Not including the snippet to the second book and focusing solely on the first, I felt that Nora could have been become way more evil, and more sinister. I had the feeling she was going to be a sort of antagonist early on. Its written well so you pick up the vibes through the pages. A lot is left open towards the end, which does make you want to read book two since you are left with so many questions. What I would like to see is more background into the dark ones. Possibly more background or chapters based around Eion, Mica, Thomas, Fion ( Pretty sure I just spelt half these names wrong.) Along with Alex.
This gets a solid five stars from me. Cover is 5/5, Book is written superbly with little to no errors. Story is definitely a 5/5 with you hungry for more at the end.

The Guardians: Forest of Ancestors by K.A. Denver is the first book in a new series, Forest of Ancestors. Eli is a witch in a group of warriors and has dedicated his life to helping non-magic people with things they can't handle. His biggest problem is not finding closure over the fact that his now ex-girlfriend left him with nothing but a letter saying it was over. When Eli discovers someone following him, others in the coven reveal similar experiences. Surely this isn't a coincidence. After someone close to Eli is murdered, a connection is revealed to the Dark Witches that were thought to have disappeared long ago. When one of their leaders sees a vision of a war approaching, Eli turns to his four closest friends for help.
K.A. Denver brings the snark and humor to life in this fantasy adventure with a vast range of delightful and in depth characters. Eli is a tragic hero who is still dealing with the death of his father, but he's also grounded and family orientated, putting his close relationships with his familiar, Parker, and his four best friends first. Eli has a lot of attitude and walls, but he's also loyal and emotional. This core group of friends often blends together in a way that family does where they play off each other's banter and attitude, but there's so much love between them. They support and respect each other, and are exactly what Eli needs in his life. Each character has their own personal flaws, vastly different backgrounds, and personalities that make them easy to tell apart, but it's easy to see how they formed the bond they have. Every character has a personality that is easy to connect with, even the ones that never speak. The animals are completely charming, such as Arthur and Parker, who tug at your heart and are just as in depth and emotional as the other characters. The Guardians is a dazzling read that's clever, funny, and has a vast world of magic that comes to life in every scene.
I had to take away one star because there were some run-on sentences and the structure was a bit distracting at times. With that said, however, I found this book quite creative! The main protagonist, Eli, was interesting right from the start. The author does an excellent job of voicing the brain of a teenage boy, a dash of immature sass yet with just enough emotional maturity to be capable of deeper thought. Organically learning about his past helped justify the fact that he is more mature than he originally lets on. I also appreciated that the main character was in fact, a teenage boy, when many books involving witchcraft seem to center around females. What I found unique about this book was unexpectedly reading from the point of view of the antagonist. Although I was inherently inclined to root for Eli, I did find myself swimming in a bit of a gray area as I was given a unique glimpse into the motivations of the other side. Upon completion I felt I was given a good look into this world of witchcraft, and I'm looking forward to the story continuing.
Eli is a handsome witch who works as a modern day magical warrior--a Guardian--protecting magical and nonmagical people from malevolent spiritual entities. When his Coven is threatened by evil witches, Eli and his friends must fight for their lives and defend their town.
Eli is the manly narrator throughout most of the book. His casual, decidedly masculine tone and his antics with his buddies reminded me of the fun TV show, Supernatural. This book has a similar good-natured vibe punctuated with really creepy paranormal stuff. The spells are vivid and well-described. The creepy scenes are super creepy.
I loved Parker, Eli's huffy cat familiar, and the newbie deputy, Alex Masters. I also really liked how Eli's tragic past haunts him and plays a role in his present.
My one complaint with the book is it uses Twitter comma rules. However, the story is still fun and not a problem if you're not picky about punctuation.
All in all, a fun, action-packed paranormal story with a cute romance on the side.
“So? What did I walk in on today, because I have to tell you, that shit today was weird and you’re all too old to be playing Harry Potter.”
Forest of Ancestors by K.A. Denver
4.0/5.0 Forest of Ancestors is a fun urban fantasy read by K.A. Denver. It surrounds our main protagonist Eli and his close group of friends as they figure out a problem cropping up and threatening their witch’s coven. Throughout the book there was a lot of flashbacks and backstories, and while those instances were a little slow, they did build into a nice picture where the characters got to shine. Eli and his gang were a fantastic bunch of people to follow, and while there could have been a little more personalization put into each of them, they were so much fun to read about. The story was interesting and the magic system was really cool.
As a forewarning, this book looks like it was written in 2016 and does leave off with a bunch of unanswered questions and a semi cliffhanger. The sequel has not been released as of yet. I am hopeful though; I did find a Facebook post from February of this year (2021) that gives hope that the book is still alive somewhere. Fingers crossed it sees the light of day soon.
Overall, it was a really fun story. The interactions of the characters and the fun and interesting magic system really made for a quick and entertaining read. Fingers crossed that Eli and his gang find a conclusion to their story soon!
I rate books as I'm reading to see if they progress or decline. This started off with a 4/5 and easily shot to a 5 star as the book got more interesting and faster paced Before reading I was a bit sceptical about whether I would enjoy as most witch books tend to follow the same path. However I was very pleasantly surprised as I discovered very quickly this was going to be unique. Loved the fact that it was a male witch for a change and the characters were fantastic. Full of magic, betrayal, death and suspense this Is a perfect read for any magic, dystopia or thriller readers xx
The story starts slow but picks up in the middle. I was pleasantly surprised by the twists and turns in the plot which makes this book a page-turner. Finished the book in 2 days and am looking forward to see how the story will develop in book 2 (now that Eli and pals are left without their leaders). I know it’s a good book when I ignore my cat pestering me to feed him. LOL
This book had me at warriors and witches! Loved the male protagonist in the central witch role and the dry humor in his voice. Enjoyed the different take on the witch theme- a sort of Buffy the vampire slayer twisted toward witchcraft. Very entertaining and great characterization.Iam intrigued to see what else this series throws into the mix.
Yes but so much more. The charictor D amazing the comradely between the gies is so believable. Loved the fermilyears but we saw more of them. Loved the tattoos. The demons were believable. Niot so shore about the Magic thie? Cannot wate for the next one. I would recomend this book to enemy one.
I really enjoyed this book. The banter between Eli and his 'crew' was excellent and really brought the characters to life. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I was given an ARC for an honest review. Eli is a witch, who along with his coven, attempt to protect humans against dark forces. Unfortunately the dark forces catch up to them and one of their own is murdered. I really enjoyed Eli's story, he was well written and despite the magical circumstances is still dealing with everyday problems including his crappy love life. A great first book for the series, can't wait for the next one
The Guardians , Forest Of Ancestors pulls you right into the magical yet scary world of Eli, a warrior witch. After a brutal attack on a covenmember, Eli and his warrior friends must fight the wicked Dark ones so that his coven will survive. Will their magic be strong enough? And if they win the battle wich price must they pay ? Find out for yourself and read The Guardians , Forest Of Ancestors. Enjoy! I know I did!
Eli is a witch who is part of a coven of warrior witches. They have to go up against a group of evil witches, after they murder his friend Connor and start a war with the coven. I really enjoyed this book, it was very different to other witch books I've read. It was good to read about a male witch for a change and even though it is set in America, there are obvious Irish roots here. Strong characters and a good story. Highly recommended.
Wow! I did not expect such a complex and deep story, but that is exactly what The Guardians is all about. Rich in detail, well written, lush with description and history, and just enough hunky male heroes to reel me in and leave me dangling on the line, desperate for more.
Mmmmm...Eli. LOVE me some Eli. Have I mentioned yet that the entire book (written by a female author) is from the first person POV of a guy? Whatever reservations you may have about POV, toss them out the window because this is ONE FUN RIDE. The word building and character depth are off the charts in this story. It's rare to find an author who can grow a main character so richly and deeply over the course of the story and yet still manage to do the same for all of the other characters in the book. And there are some FUNNY and AMAZING characters like Masters and the rest of the guys.
I LOVE this story is about male witches. There wasn't a chapter in the book that I wasn't cheering the guys on, laughing out loud at their antics, and grinning from ear to ear. Their camaraderie and constant joking sets the background and lays the foundation for the core of a pretty great fantasy story. I love the mixture of humor with the serious aspects of the novel. And Parker, don't even get me started on the little furball (Eli's familiar).
The best part of this book is the ingenuity. It's creative. It's unpredictable. And the magical elements are some of the best scenes in the book. Written flawlessly and in a conversational tone that often makes you feel like you were actually in Eli's head, this book is a MUST READ. In fact, most of the book I felt like I was somehow transported inside Sam Winchester's head from Supernatural, which is way more than ok with me. I happily give The Guardians an enthusiastic 5 STARS.
This book begins with action right away and I was immediately drawn in. Eli is a witch and what struck me, first of all, was how you don't get many books with male witches. The writing is great and the story is fast-paced. There is lots happening but the main storyline is evident throughout and this book it's a real page-turner. I loved Eli's familiar Parker the cat too. He was snarky and clever and just perfect for the story.
The beginning of the book kicks off with Eli banishing an evil spirit from a house and coming away more drained as usual. He then goes to a coven meeting where Alex his ex is and there is some tension there. Eli is heartbroken. Throughout the book we get to meet all Eli's coven members and friends and the character development is excellent.
This is the first book in the series and it has built everything up really well. There's lots of mystery and intrigue and the way the book ended left me wanting more. I can't wait to see what book 2 in this series brings.
Forest Of Ancestors (The Guardians #1) By K.A. Denver
"Johnny Storm?" Dude! She just called you The Human Torch!"
Eli is one of the worrier witches in a coven that he belongs to. Eli and his friends are trained to fight the evil that torments our world. The characters in this book are well put together and very likeable, especially with all the sarcastic humor that I tend to love. You will find funnies throughout most of the book.
Eli was a hard character for me to relate to at first. I as a reader want to become one with the main character. Eli Quinn was harder for me than normal, but eventually, I was able to accomplish and enjoy escaping into his mind and his world.
After the first few chapters, I was hooked. I would like to thank the author for producing good reading material and thank the negative Nancy reviewers for peeking my interest in this book!
First I have to say that there are a lot of books out there about witches and this one stands above them like a warm blanket that gives you a warm feeling inside and stimulates the imagination within. I am one of those people that enjoys a good read that is well written and this book is right in that category. It gives you the pretense that magic is not only real but so are witches. We follow Eli and his friends within his coven who together combat the evil demonic forces known as D'thsehs. I love how creative the author was with the names, the plot development, and how it drew you in and keep you there. I am not one to give spoilers so if you want more you will have to read this enjoyable read. trust me you will not doubt that good decision.
There are many things to really like about this book, it is light hearted, well written and intriguing. For fantasy fans especially those inclined to a witch or witchcraft genre this is read you'll fully enjoy and an author you'll want more from.
I really enjoyed this book, my favourite part by far though is the cat. Every time he made an appearance I had a smile on my face and the story how parker came into Eli's life really touched me.
This is a great story which holds a good level of mystery and intrigue that develops at a good pace as the plot progresses. The differences between light and dark magic, and the ways in which each character uses their magic, add interest and complexity to the story. The central characters are varied and quite well crafted although, as a reader, I didn’t really feel as connected to most of them as I would have liked to.
I really like the concept of the forest of ancestors as a place of memory as well as of magic, and the ways in which that setting is portrayed and developed in the story. The images were formed quite vividly in my mind as I read, and it was good to see the characters fully engaging with, and responding to, this special element of their environment in personal ways.
My one criticism - and it is a real annoyance as a reader - is that there were places in which the writing really needed more thorough editing to remove quite obvious errors that remain in the text. A less fastidious reader might not notice all of them, but a couple of them were quite glaring and should never have made it to the final manuscript.
Overall, though, I did enjoy this book. It has some quite original elements and surprising turns that complement the strong storyline.
I'm not sure *WHO* exactly are all these people writing fabulous reviews (4 and 5 stars??) for "Forest of Ancestors"... but whoever you are, it's clear that you are not being very honest. I'm thinking that these reviewers may be other authors. Authors helping other authors. And friends of K.A Denver perhaps.
In any case, the novel is unfortunately full of spelling errors, bad grammar, run-on sentences, etc.. In fact, many sentences make absolutely no sense whatsoever. Even the blurb on the back cover of the book I received has a typo and incorrect grammar.
The storyline about Eli and his friends could have been interesting, if only it had been written by an actual author/writer. Sadly, K.A. Denver is not one.
I'm not sure what to say about this book. The main plot was full of holes and felt childish to me. Okay all main male characters were enjoyable enough, but nonetheless something was missing for me. The main reason for revenge was personally, illogical. And the end simply typical.
In this first book of her Guardians series, K A Denver introduces us to a world of magic, where fire bolts can be thrown and witches travel around by portals. But that’s not really what the story is about. The coven are family, their warriors a band of brothers: a whole series of relationships are built up between the characters, all of whom are brought to life by some excellent writing.
In fact, it is these characters that make this a stand-out work. Denver has invested heavily in them, and absolutely none are just making up numbers. The male bonding and buried sensitivities she allows to sneak passed the bravado and banter make her men not only believable but truly likeable - yes, even when they act just like men! (That, ladies, is great writing!) The women, both good and bad, are strong and complex, holding secrets and bearing grudges, coloured bold and dark by their histories. Even Parker the cat is thoroughly believable and comes complete with his own little back-story.
What else? Well, the overall concept of the coven and their forest is fantastic, whilst the magic-fuelled fights present us with ‘good versus evil’ set pieces that shine like Star Wars on speed. More than that, some scenes clutched at my heart but I won’t give spoilers by describing these.
I would say that it finished promptly after the all-action finale and perhaps with too little reflection of the aftermath: But then again, just right for a follow-up novel. (Soon please! And more Parker!)
My verdict? When I read this book, my belief was suspended. I believed in Eli and all his friends and enemies. I believed in magic.
So not just 5 stars. Five magic ones to wish on for more of this series.
I wasn't too sure whether I would enjoy this as recent years has brought an abundance of tales involving witches, vampires and werewolves that, I believe, has somewhat overcrowded the genre.
Well! Where do I start? What an intriguing, well-written piece of fantasy fiction. I was taken in from the start by the characters and then the storyline. Most times it is the other way around, I typically need to enjoy the story first before feeling anything for the characters. K A Denver does such an excellent job of building the main character and his friends, you become lost in their world without the need to see where the story is going.
Without giving too much away, the warrior witches are fighting against ancient dark forces that threaten their tranquillity and peaceful way of life. There are some enjoyable twists that will surprise you. I would highly recommend this book and I'm looking forward to the next in the series as well as anything else this Author can churn out.
This is K.A. Denver's first book and is the first in The Guardians Series. The first chapter drops you straight into the action and the entire book was very fast paced. I loved that this book centres around a group of male witches, which is rarely seen, or at least I've rarely read a book with male witches! I enjoyed the interaction between the large cast of characters and I loved that their coven was like a huge, extended family. Finally, there was Parker... as Eli's familiar I thought he would have played more of a role, however, I thought he was brilliant!
The only thing I will say is that at times it felt a little repetitive, with certain things explained several times, however, this was a very enjoyable read! :-)
