For over six years, The Woman in the Story has been the go-to resource for writers who want to be gender-mindful when they figure how to create female characters. Inspired by female psychology and gender issues, this how-to book casts a refreshingly honest and empowering women-centric light on every stage of the screenwriting process.
It's great when you find the right book at the right time - and for any writer interested in improving their work, this is the book. So much in The Woman in the Story to guide you through characterisation - it's making a huge impact on what I'm writing, and how I'm rediscovering films. A must read.
Definitely more useful if you have a particular character in mind, but nonetheless an interesting read on female characterisation.
A bit dismissive of sci-fi as a genre, and the value it can bring to developing women in cinema, but still, doesn't everyone seem to be to a certain extent? Oh well.
Otherwise, very detailed and interesting, complete with lots of examples from a very long filmography.
This book is well worth a read for all writers, not just screen writers. It gave me much to think about and my writing has already benefited greatly. I would highly recommend.
I've read this book three times, underlined, highlighted, and taken notes! It's a must-have for any writer who wishes to develop in-depth, unique characters.
I feel like this is more useful for people writing urban/slice of life fiction. Not all that useful to someone like me who's writing fantasy/science fiction.
