The Thoughtful Leader: A Model of Integrative Leadership

Rate this book
Leadership is a quality that is difficult to define. Some believe that it is innate, the gift of a selected few. Others believe that it is a skill that can be learned but don't agree on what, exactly, should be taught.

In The Thoughtful Leader, Jim Fisher provides an invigorating, inclusive and positive framework for teaching current and aspiring leaders in all walks of life. The author has incorporated various apparently opposing leadership ideas into an integrated model. In order to successfully meet the challenges of a fast changing world, leaders can no longer choose between managing, directing or engaging. The thoughtful leader is someone who simultaneously, consistently and coherently manages, directs and engages their followers. The framework provides a way for anyone who is motivated to lead, has the courage to act and is willing to think about their actions to become more effective. Thoughtful leaders can maintain integrity in their actions and activities regardless of the situations that they encounter day-to-day.

The model developed in this book applies to many settings, including corporate and public service environments. The Thoughtful Leader offers a fresh and forward thinking framework that allows active and emerging leaders to be better prepared to live as a leader day to day.

A leader is an idea personified in an individual.

Introductory approach to the art and science of leadership. From the title it's pretty obvious that it is a synergistic model that weaves other managerial structures together. While I have encountered many of these concepts through working in various fields and interacting on different levels, having it all in one place and methodically explained how the elements support each other is valuable. This is not an in-depth workbook; it is a strong overview.

The introduction lays out the author's background making a case for speaking from a place of authority. Excellent recommendations on other texts to read for more in-depth analysis. The constant personal interjections of phrases like "my" attempted to make it a more familial read, but it ended up detracting from the text and sounding like filler at points.

All that said, the 9 box model is compelling.

MANAGING_______DIRECTING_______ENGAGING

PLAN-------------VISION-------------VALUES

ORGANIZE--------ALIGNMENT---------CLARITY

CONTROL--------MOTIVATION------INVOLVEMENT

Utilizing all nine strategies of this three-pronged approach tells, inspires and motivates. This integrated theory essentially synthesizes three historical leadership styles into one. Obviously, the evidence supporting this theory is anecdotal with personal stories of observations of success.

Vision is what makes the form desirable to fulfill its function. Function is critical to success and cannot be ignored.

Integrated leadership is an integrated workforce. Everyone needs to understand why they're rowing the ship, at what pace and direction to achieve success.

Leaders who want to get things done have to manage.

Simply said, vision is not enough. Great ideas don't correlate into success and there's a reason the oldest model of management still has relevancy. (See first column)

Visions should be a stretch to a new and better place, but leaders as hardheaded managers need to know that useful visions cannot be impossible leaps.

Overall, a solid and worthwhile time investment to read even if it is a review. I will be utilizing the 9 box strategy.

A good book on how to be a leader. Instead of simply showing some managerial tactics, this book delves into psychology and discusses the factors involved in leading.

Note - I received a free copy of the book from the publisher. This has not influenced my review in any way.

Good insights. I definitely learned something

Well researched and ideas are fleshed out at a good pace. I could follow the logic. Learned more than I thought I would about half way through the book

The Thoughtful Leader is about much more than just leadership - it looks deeply at human motivation, authenticity, self-improvement, social economics, and social psychology. Written in a fluid style that rides the line between formality and pop science, it's discursive but never meandering, and propels the reader through the book. In many ways, the book feels like it could have been written by one of the many other writer's touched on in The Thoughtful Leader: Daniel Pink, of "Drive" fame. That's no small praise, but Fisher earns it.

Like Drive, The Thoughtful Leader is a book I will return to again.

Disclosure: I was provided an electronic reader's copy of the book to review.
