I just love this series. Unlike a typical guidebook, it's something you can read all the way through and learn about the history of a region. It covers some amazing sites I had never heard of. These are particularly good if you're interested in the architecture of older buildings.

I have an earlier edition. I love the Smithsonian Guides' depth and quality. I think they have more staying power than a lot of guidebooks.
