Have his years abroad prepared him for the expectations of his father when he’s forced to live up to his legacy? Tate Heston returns home from Iraq when his beloved career is cut short by an IED. He’s used to turning boys into men and then leading them into battle where sometimes the good guys lose. This makes him even more hesitant about taking on a job guarding a spoiled brat, but he believes he can probably do what he does best... make young Chas a man. Not everyone wants to see the brat succeed in his father’s place. Things have been running just fine for years and the return of Charles Fordham III and the shake up his arrival causes, has his family’s enemies in a panic. I did enjoy this, and I’m probably only disappointed because this is a Patrica Logan story, the third in a fantastic series and I expected more from it.

The premise is great. There’s a whiff of the Kevin Costner / Whitney Houston film surrounding former Marine Tate and his rich-boy charge Chas. There’s a wonderful chasm between the two men’s life experiences and Tate’s initial reaction to Chas’ privileged life is brilliant.

The connection between Tate and Chas is electric; the sex is hot, though vanilla and infrequent by Patricia Logan standards. The men are separated for various reasons for much of the story, so this remains an adventure with a little romance added in.

I enjoyed Chas’ grandmother. She offers some depth and balance to the story, bringing the entire cast of characters more fully to life.

The research and editing are poor. A simple Google search confirms that it is Eton, not Eaton that Chas attended. Boys attend secondary school in the UK at 11 years of age. And Eton is a boys’ school, not a boy’s school. Chas Fordham’s maternal grandmother would not be called Mrs. Fordham. Errors proliferate through the story and I honestly expect better from a Patricia Logan book.

The plot is also completely overblown. From obvious villains to dastardly double agents to half the US Marine Corps that descends, heavily armed, to protect private citizens on private property, to the extraordinary body count that doesn’t even seem to raise any official eyebrows - the writing just doesn’t start to compare to the subtle and complex story about art theft that started this series.

So - from any other author, this would be an enjoyable action-adventure romp. It just lacks the complexity and attention to detail I expect from Patricia Logan. Which is possibly a completely unfair judgement.

3 ½ stars for this M/M
Chas has had a lonely life, his mom died when he was young, he was shipped off to school and really had no friends. When he gets kicked out of school again he is sent home and forced to learn the family business. Being in a wealthy family also means there are dangers lurking and Chas needs a bodyguard. Tate is hired to guard Chas. This story had so much potential but fell a little short for me. At times the book was really wordy and most of it seemed really unimportant to the story so I found myself skimming. About 40% into the book is when action finally happens between Chas and Tate and it is smoking HOT. The whole drama with the spy in the house was so easy to figure out who it was, then what was going to happen when Chas decided to jump in full force at the family business. I think if the focus would have been more on Tate and Chas and them learning about each other it would have been a better book. Don’t get me wrong, the sex scenes were hot, but other than that, it was just an ok book.

The Brat by Patricia Logan (MM/Romance)

A copy of this book was provided to me by Inked Rainbow Reads in exchange for an honest review.

****4 STARS****

Charles (the brat) gets booted out of college for getting caught cheating...again, but I guess this time he really didn't do it. His father is an A-grade asshole of course, who forces a bodyguard on his son. The bodyguard is Tate. Hmmm, Tate. Sexy Tate.

Charles annoyed me at first, but I felt for the guy cause really, his parents suck. Well his dad does, but his grandmother is okay. They keep saying that the father does love his son, but I saw no proof of that. I liked the chem between Charles and Tate. I didn't read the previous books, but it can be read as a standalone if you want.

Lured in by the blurb, I expected much more from this story. Storytelling and writing were half decent, neither stylish nor sophomoric, but the entirely hackneyed intrigue, virtual absence of original twists, very lukewarm character painting (both protagonists were not half as strong-willed and prone to head-butting as the blurb would have one believe and was necessary for this plot line) and excessive vulgarity of the dialogue greatly diminished my appreciation, along with the too many unresolved issues from the first half of the book (they seem to have been forgotten). This was very cheap entertainment indeed.

The Brat (Marine Bodyguards #3) by Patricia Logan
4 stars
M/M Romance, mystery
I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

I have not read any of the previous books, but never felt lost.

This book was full of heat, mystery and betrayal. I really disliked Chas' father - he was not likable at all. I found it hard to believe that Chas could ever live up to his father's standards, despite what Grandma preached about how Chas' father did love him. I never saw the love, not throughout the story.

Then there was Tate. Yum! He is trying to do a good job - seems to be punished for doing that job and just let's it go - I wish that he had let loose his tongue on Mr. Fordham... He was supposed to be this fierce protector, but when it came to his employment and employer being in the wrong, he was almost meek.

Finally, you have the mystery characters. I loved how Logan was able to write them in a way that made them mysterious. And, even though the story and bad guys were somewhat predictable, I found this story to be very enjoyable, if somewhat juvenile.

The chemistry between Chas and Tate is through the roof and they can tear up the sheets with the best of them. But, there is also a sweetness to them - again, their relationship is almost juvenile in that shy, timid way. Overall a very enjoyable read.

Oh my. I know I'm stepping out of line with my two star rate but this book is so so so ridiculous.

What I didn't like:

- It's like listening to a soap opera.
I couldn't feel any connection between Chas and Tate in the beginning. They didn't even speak much to each other before having sex. The only similarities they had at the beginning was that Tate liked when Chas played the piano. And Chas liked Tate because of his looks.

- The first 25 percent describe the happenings of the first 2 days and then 3 months are rushed over in 2 pages where nothing happens between Chas and Tate. Nothing! Can you believe it?

- Sometimes there a sentences that are half a page.

- Important things are often told in the inside.

- The story itself is so farfetched: take a love story (with lots of dirty sex scenes), add a crime story and some really hard and bad boys.

I sometimes hesitated if I should stop reading but I was so entertained because it was so hilarious and often laughed out loud.
I just had to read to the end.
But I think I won't read any more books of this author.
And this book will go to the shelve: "Books that don't work for me" 😂

This is only the second book I’ve read from this author but she is quickly becoming one of my favorites. This book is part of a series but can be read as a stand-alone. This book had mystery and suspense but also love and tenderness. I loved Chas and Tate but completely disliked Chas father. I absolutely dislike people who turn away from the children when they need them the most. That’s what happened between Chas and his father when he shipped him out the country shortly after his mother died of cancer. Chas returns after a scandal while in college and his father hires a bodyguard for him who he completely falls in love with. This book had HOT sex scenes and but it also had mystery. I will definitely be reading some more of this author books.

❤ I loved this heeps.  Ms Logan has written a story that had me reading this from start to finish not putting this down. Tate and Chas are fantastic with chemistry buzzing. There first meeting wasn't exactly a pleasant one from Chas point of view being the brat he was. But Tate sees through him as to why he's being difficult to his father. Love, Drama and Action kept me glued. I loved seeing the super sexy Jarrett in this and getting to know his freindship with Tate.
Back in 2004 Sergent Major Tate woke up in a hospital in Germany from the results of a bomb destroy in army unit.
Present:
Charles 24 ish was summoned into his father's office to hear all about his failed Uni again. Now to learn about his fathers business and to have a bodyguard to keep him out of mischief and the media.
Tate 36 yrs was now the baby sitter of a very rude brat named Charles.

Consigliato!

I really didn't know what to expect from this book having never read the authors works before but I enjoyed it. Anything military related always pricks up my ears so I had to give it a go and I found Chas and Tate to be likeable characters and the sex was really descriptive and hot, but I had a few niggles with the story, one being that things happened so fast and certain characters minds changed on a dime. From Chas first appearing like a spoilt rich kid to being a really nice guy once he'd hooked up with Tate and a certain person turning out to be a bad guy which seemed a little unbelievable (you'll know what I mean if you read the book). Overall though this was quite a nice read but I don't know if I'm intrigued enough to read the previous two books. I did enjoy Chas and Tate's eagerness to get together once they'd decided to give it a go and how they spoke to each other in the bedroom, which was really hot.

This was my least favorite of the Marine Bodyguard series. I didn't buy the chemistry between the two main characters. The way that the villains were introduced & acted behind the scenes was sort of confusing.
And then we meet the character Jarrett The silver Fox and one of the main characters in The death and destruction series by the same author. I couldn't match this Jarett with the Jarrett from the other series. It's like it was two different guys.
I really couldn't suspend my disbelief. Oh well.

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

This is the third book in the Marine Bodyguards series and my least favourite.

Chas hadn’t had the easiest start in life. His mother died when he was young and his father immediately shipped him off to boarding school to help deal with his grief. Chas had to toughen up quickly and the relationship with his father was strained from then on. Thrown out of college on suspicion of cheating Chas finally returns home under a dark cloud and has to deal with his father’s anger and coldness. His behaviour as a brat felt forced to me and I couldn’t understand the power his father had over him to dictate his life choices. Chas didn’t live a lavish lifestyle so the money didn’t really have a hold over him yet he let his father plan out his life and take control. One of his father’s requirements is that Chas has a bodyguard and again I wasn’t clear on the why. Yes he was wealthy but he was by no means famous or well-known and it seemed a little over the top.

Tate Heston returned from Iraq when his unit was hit by an IED and he now works as a bodyguard. He has a soft spot running through him a mile wide and quickly falls for Chas and his stroppy ways. As always Patricia Logan writes hot sex scenes and when this pair got together that is exactly what happened however the story leaned more towards the mystery and family drama than it did to Chas and Tate’s relationship. The mystery wasn’t difficult to work out but a lot of time is given to it on page and as usual the family ends up in life threatening circumstances.

There is a lot more drama in this book than there was in the first two of the series and if that’s your thing then this book will be for you.

Sexy ex-military bodyguards, a spoiled brat, traitors galore!
That is only a few things to expect in this super sexy, nail-biting suspense story. Clear some time. You won’t want to put it down.
Chaz doesn’t want a bodyguard when he arrives back home from college. After years of being away, he feels unwanted and is very defiant and rebellious. Ex- Marine Tate Heston has more than a handful with this young man. But not all is as seen. Once Tate gets to know Chaz, he sees a brilliant, misunderstood, young man. Just as the things heat up for the two and Chaz is settled with Tate, the twists begin, and we are one wild rollercoaster of these twists and turns.
I loved this story. There are may characters involved, and the story will certainly keep yo o its toes. I will say there were so many views, that the way it kept changing from one to the other was a bit jarring at times, but once you figured out the speaker, it wasn’t so hard to follow, even though one speaker was a secret to the very end. We even get to see a few favorites from the first two books.
If you like sexy marines, bodyguards, mystery/suspense, millionaires, older men/younger men, and some hot man-sex, this is definitely for you. Though this is a book three of a series, I think you can read it as a standalone though the other two are well worth the read!

This book started off good and I was enjoying it up until it became a super cheesey spy novel with all sorts of clichés and ridiculousness. It was almost a DNF but since I paid for it I decided to stick with it but I did skip about 20% of the book.

Even the sex scenes were cheesey as hell and full of "Omg, yea, f*ck me harder, you're so sexy bodyguard, I want it harder, f*ck me!" I understand that the whole bodyguard thing is probably part of the kink for some readers but seriously, who talks like that during sex? He actually calls Tate 'bodyguard' during sex, and more than once.

I just couldn't get over all the cheese and finally gave up, I was flipping through the two page long descriptions of expensive clothes and cars because yea, we get it, the dude is stealing money and looking like a rich dude, I don't need to hear about his expensive suit and car to be reminded of that!

I guess I made a mistake when judging a book by its title cuz I was hoping for a little bit of daddy/boy kink since usually that goes hand and hand with the whole brat thing but yea no, if you're thinking the same way look elsewhere cuz this couple is beyond vanilla, its basically a Harlequin 'suspense' novel just with two dudes. I don't think I'll be reading anything else by this author, its just not my type of book.

This book was so good! I loved seeing Chas grow through the book. He went from his brat personality, though his reasons behind acting out were justified once we got to know him, to a suave businessman. Tate was such an Alpha top. He was so dang sexy. I kind of wanted to get to know him a little bit more, especially with the whole storage unit thing. But he was fleshed out enough for me to get a good feel for him.
Jarrett was a bit of a shock. I so didn’t see him coming. But now I want more from him. I hope he gets a story because I want to see him happy. Gran was such a fun character. She cracked me up most of the time she was on page.
Ms. Logan writes wonderful stories and I was pulled into this one and couldn’t put it down until it was over. I liked how we got scenes from the bad guys’ point of view, but in a way that doesn’t give away who and leaves you guessing until the reveal and you’re all “OH MY GOSH NO WAY!” I love how she brings in characters from her previous stories. If you haven’t read their book it’s ok. But if you have, you get to see characters you enjoy and see them again, if only briefly. I can’t wait to keep reading this series.

*** Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie in exchange for a fair and honest review. ***

Chas Fordham III was expelled from Oxford and sent back home. His father is none too happy about this, so he decides it's time for Chas to learn the family business, and to stop him from shaming the family name further he hires a bodyguard for him, former Marine Tate Heston. They all have no clue that they are dealing with things much more dangerous than Chas being in the public eye though.

While I have to admit it took me a bit to warm up to Chas and Tate, by the first kiss I was sold! Just the imagery of tall, dark, handsome Tate with shorter, but by no means less attractive Chas was enough to make the temperature rise quite a bit. Chas's grandmother was adorable and so resourceful and I loved her to bits! And the secondary storyline definitely kept me interested as it unraveled and everything was revealed.

Oh, what a tangled web you wove, Ms. Logan! A fascinating tale of revenge, espionage, blended in with the hotness that were Tate and Chas together, that you won't be sorry to pick up!

One of the great things about being a reviewer is that I get exposed to all kinds of new books and authors. I hadn’t read anything by Patricia Logan and I was excited by the premise here – Bratty rich kid meets tough Marine.

The book started out okay – it looks like Chas isn’t as “bratty” as he’d been made out to be by his father and Tate is a kind of “sensitive” Marine – so these two will undoubtedly be able to meet somewhere in the middle.

I, unfortunately, had to stop about 20% of the way in. The dialog and the “action” was just a little too “over the top soap opera like” for me and the smexy times were a little too “porny” for my taste.

I absolutely have those books that I love that fall into categories that are less than literary masterpieces, but this just wasn’t hitting my personal buttons.

So – without making a judgment on what is probably a great book in the hands of the right reader, I opted to DNF.

I think the writing was fine and the characters looked fun, the drama was just too much for me.
