Lincoln's Sacred Effort

Rate this book
Lucas Morel examines what the public life of Abraham Lincoln teaches about the role of religion in a self-governing society. Lincoln's understanding of the requirements of republican government led him to accommodate and direct religious sentiment toward responsible self-government. As a successful republic requires a moral or self-controlled people, Lincoln believed, the moral and religious sensibilities of a society should be nurtured.

Pithy and well researched book on Lincoln, his base of knowledge of the Bible, of Christian beliefs, and how they are crucial to a society that would be just. Lincoln was a Christian as many of us know, but not from the start. His journey was like many of us - over many years. I can recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Lincoln, his faith or religous beliefs and how he was guided by them throughout his life, especially the war years.

Fantastic read..I must warn though this is a very slow and dry read. The reader must take the time to really absorb what the author is putting out there and its' impact on the future of the US military.
