Excellent murder mystery written in an unique and wonderful style. I absolutely loved this great historical mystery about a young woman trying to solve a murder which affected the life of a family member many years earlier. If you like mysteries, if you like historical novels, if you like a good read, this is the novel for you! Highly recommended five star read.

Five stars is probably high, but I'm giving it a 90 sheerly for readability enjoyment. It's hard to explain this correctly, but what I enjoyed so much about this book was that it was written exactly like a book a hundred years ago would be written in the language of a hundred years before that. Just, like, nailed that. It was a short book which moved swiftly and cleanly (by which I don't mean some sort of arrested horror about sensuality, though that is certainly a thing this book did not contain, but that it was smooth and flowed well) from beginning to end, in a style reminiscent of the old books I enjoyed as a young person, mostly written between the 1910s and 1960 or so. The dialogue, too, was utterly convincing. This author also writes books set in the 1920s, and I don't know if they're good story-wise, but I'm betting they're note perfect in terms of dialogue and probably sound as though they were written then.

Anyway. If the author was of a mind to, she could have created something bigger and more complex from this story, and then it'd be rather better, but I like it fine as it is.

What a wonderful mystery novel. So unlike any other that I have read (in a very good way). Exciting twists and turns, with wonderful storylines which culminate in an unexpected and surprising ending. Laura Brett has delivered a true masterpiece with THE MYSTERY OF AN OLD MURDER. Her writing style is very pleasant to read, her characters likeable (and unlikeable where appropriate...you will understand when you read this great novel!), and the mystery that will keep you guessing throughout the book.

The plot concerns a young woman who learns of her aunt's unhappy past, which involved a murder and a fugitive murderer. As the young woman visits the scene of the crime she is slowly but surely drawn into the circumstances surrounding the murder. As dramas start to unfold around her, she gets closer and closer to solving the murder of so many years before.

THE MYSTERY OF AN OLD MURDER by Laura Brett is highly recommended reading. I read the kindle version (available on Amazon), but a paperback version is also available (I got two to give to friends, who also enjoyed the book very much).

It's been a while since I read such a wonderful, suprising and refreshing book like THE MYSTERY OF AN OLD MURDER by LAURA BRETT! What an exciting, suspenseful plot, beautifully written, and with such wonderful characters!

Although this is Laura Brett's first novel, she writes like a professional, capturing the reader's imagination from the very first page!

The plot concerns a young woman named Marjorie, who goes to stay with friends. Shortly before she leaves her home, she learns of the tragic misfortune of her aunt, whose happiness was destroyed when a man was murdered. The man her aunt loved and still loves, was related to the man suspected of the murder, although the suspect escaped justice. When Marjorie goes to stay with her friends who live near the scene of the crime, she encounters several strangers who in one way or another are connected to the murder, and as time goes by Marjorie starts to uncover clues and makes some startling discoveries!

THE MYSTERY OF AN OLD MURDER is the perfect book for anyone looking for a good mystery, or just a good book.

In her wonderful mystery book THE MYSTERY OF AN OLD MURDER, talented writer LAURA BRETT takes the reader on a wonderful journey with lots of red herrings along the way!

The story centers on an old murder which intrigues Marjorie Drew from the moment she learns of it, especially because her favorite aunt was connected to it. While visiting family members Marjorie finds herself close to the scene of the crime, and can't help herself by doing some investigating of her own.

The author LAURA BRETT writes in a very pleasant manner which takes the reader back in time on a journey no reader wants to miss! Her descriptions are great, and she shows her mastery of words especially in the chapter where Marjorie travels on a stagecoach populated by a great number of people, some of whom will play a great part in what is to come.

THE MYSTERY OF AN OLD MURDER is highly recommended reader for those who love a good mystery, and those readers who like great writing, a bit of romance, and wonderful characters.

THE MYSTERY OF AN OLD MURDER by LAURA BRETT has mystery, murder, secret hiding places, romance, hidden treasure and one of the best heroines I’ve come across!

When Marjorie Drew goes to stay with relatives she learns about a murder that involved her favorite aunt. As she learns more and more of the past she starts to discover things in the present which are all connected to that unsolved murder of a long time ago!

Great characterizations, suspenseful throughout, and a wonderful read from start to finish.

Thoroughly enjoyable mystery novel. It was so good that I just couldn't stop reading!

The story is about an old murder which broke up the engagement of the main character's aunt. The main character starts to investigate the murder and comes to some startling conclusions, but as she does so, the past seems to be catching up with the future.

The book is very well written and has excellent characters.

Five stars out of five!

Ms.Brett, Your first book is delightful.

Your characters were well fleshed out. The characters speech patterns were perfect for their local. I grew up in England and I felt as though I went back in time to another place, where horses and traps ruled the road and where mysteries were just around the corner ready to be solved by bright young minds.

Great fun for gothic mystery fans

This is old fashioned gothic style mystery fun.

It's got your heroine, an old murder which cost her aunt her greatest love, secret caves, stolen diamonds, etc.

A wonderful starter book for young "women" to discover the joys of this type of genre.

A story during Napoleons time

I thought I wouldn't like this story as it was set in a period I wasn't interested in. But, I was wrong. I enjoyed this story and couldn't put it down.
