Erin Walton wasn't to blame. She had tried to earn much-needed money and had earned a goat instead. John Walton couldn't help it, either, that a customer paid him with two cows instead of cash. But the goat and the cows did get the family into the cream business - and the cream business got them into deep trouble with their neighbors.
The family learned the hard way that one neighbor was less than honest, and it took "Erin's Varmint" as Grandma scathingly referred to the mischievous but well-meaning goat- to set forces in motion to straighten everything out for the Waltons!
Gladys Baker Bond was a prolific author of at least thirty-five books, most published by Western Publishing. Many of her Whitman books were Authorized Editions based on popular television series. Mrs. Baker wrote seven books under the pseudonym of Jo Mendel. She wrote three Trixie Belden books under the pseudonym of Kathryn Kenny. A 1981 volume of Contemporary Authors lists only one Meg book among Gladys Baker Bond's writings. It is not known who wrote the other five books.
Another book based on the TV show "The Waltons". The family is suffering from a lack of money to buy much-needed shoes - and also from a new goat that loves mischief. They milk the goat and two cows to sell the cream, but then the money starts dwindling because the cream is losing quality somehow. The family must pull together as usual to solve their problems. Low-key, but fairly well written.
The Walton books were some of my favorites as a child; good stories, strong characters, humor, and a little bit of mystery and history. Definitely a fun re-read.
