...has followed Marcia back from the magical realm of Ambermere, and taken up residence in her apartment. Fortunately, though, Borphis is really a pleasant houseguest.
A PACK OF PIXIES...
...is a bit more troublesome. They tend to attach themselves to any powerful wielder of magic—but so do other, more unpleasant creatures. To protect herself; Marcia must find a teacher to show her the proper use of magic.
THE WIZARD OF AMBERMERE
...must be found. A necromancer must be returned from the Lower Regions of Ambermere. And a demon must be gifted with his true names. For better or worse, magic has become a full-time job for Marcia. One she can't quit. One in which she must succeed or perish!
Marcia has returned home. She left her companions behind and, while glad to be home, she worries about Father and is determined to find her way back to him to make sure he is safe. That determination turns into an effort to use the ring that was given to her by the goddess Elyssa to find her way across dimensions and back to his side. But, as things seem to go for Marcia, things don't go quiet as planned and she ends up in the Lower Regions where things turn from bad to worse to life threatening. But, Marcia is who she is, and drawing new allies around her continues to fight to be that person and refuses to give up. And, perhaps the ring that she has depended upon so much isn't exactly the power that she thought it was.
Unfortunately, this is J. Calvin Pierces' final book in the Ambermere series. While the three books have been wonderful and entertaining, the potential for this story moving forward was hopeful. Perhaps someday...
Not one for reviews but I'll share some thoughts I had once I finished this book.
There's a lot of unanswered questions here.
Like:
- Alexander and Borphis. Does Alexander recover fully? Does Borphis go home? Do Marcia and Alexander ever have that much needed talk to answer her (and our) questions?
- Suzy and Marcia. Where do they next go? After Father? Where is he? Where is Annie (was that her name?)? What about the ring? And the Goddess? Hannah?
Given that the book was published two years after I was born...I'd say there's a good chance that the author isn't going to make a fourth. But it seemed like there should have been another book...or at least a short wrap up to all the characters and their stories.
I loved this series but it feels wrong to end it here when we still know nothing about Father, the Sisterhood, all the issues in their world and what will happen to the characters.
Sorry to see the trilogy end. Marcia has really grown as a character and I want to see what happens next. Perhaps some food-splattered demons, smelly trolls, and prim, proper necromancers are dancing in Pierce's mind begging to come out and play again.
So this is how it ends …… maybe there will be another in the series sometime. I am so glad that someone decided to reissue these for the Kindle. So much of the stuff out there on Kindle now is self-published, but with a reissue, there aren’t glaring editing gaps. That makes for a much more enjoyable read.
The adventure continues. Another good read. I am disappointed there isn't another in the series. Now that they are available as ebooks through www.valhallapress.com maybe Mr. Pierce is hard at work?
