About the author

Ernst Tugendhat is a Czech-born German philosopher.

Tugendhat studied classics at Stanford from 1944 to 1949, and went on to do graduate work in philosophy and classics at the University of Freiburg, receiving his doctorate with a work on Aristotle in 1956. During the years 1956−1958 he did post-doctoral research at the University of Münster. From then until 1964 he was an assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Tübingen, where, after spending 1965 lecturing at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, he gained his Habilitation in 1966 analyzing the concept of truth in Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger.

Το σύγγραμμα ξεκινάει με την γλωσσική ανάλυση της λέξης "εγώ" και του ανθρώπινου αυτσυσχετισμού και συνεχίζει με την πρακτική χρήση της. Η αυτοαναφορικότητα μας, η μέριμνά για τον εαυτό μας, ο φόβος απέναντι στον θάνατο δημιουργούν την ανάγκη για ψυχική γαλήνη που επιτυγχάνεται με τον μυστικισμό ή με την την θρησκεία. Ο πρώτος δρόμος οδηγεί σε έναν μετασχηματισμό της αυτοκατανόησης( και ο δεύτερος σε έναν μετασχηματισμό του κόσμου μέσω μιας προβολής της επιθυμίας. Η μεγάλη βαρύτητα που δίδεται στις παραδόσεις της Ινδίας και της Κίνας (σε σχέση με τις παραδόσεις της Δύσης ) είναι ίσως το μοναδικό μειονέκτημα του βιβλίου.

προκειμενου να απαλύνει κανείς αυτή την τόσο επώδυνη κατάσταση ακολουθήθηκαν στην ιστορία της ανθρωπότητας δύο δρόμοι, εκείνος της θρησκείας και εκείνος του μυστικισμού"
