I received a galley of this novel for review through https://www.netgalley.com. I categorize this novel as ‘R’ because it contains scenes of Violence. This novel is set in contemporary California and the Middle East.
The primary character is retired US Army Major Doug Reeves. Since leaving active duty as a Apache gunship pilot, he has bought a boat and is now living an easy life. All of that unexpectedly changes when the yacht moored in the next slot explodes.
His boat is almost sunk and being sent to the hospital with injuries fires up Reeves’ interest. He soon finds that the explosion was from a bomb, not negligence. As he continues to ask questions he stirs up the ire of more than one person.
Using his lengthy list of contacts from 20 years in the military, he continues to dig into the assassination of his neighbor. Before long he uncovers a plot that is more dire than a simple murder. Along the way he becomes close to another boat owner injured in the blast, Donni Brakken. She is younger than Reeves, beautiful and a bit of a mystery.
I enjoyed the 7 hours I spent reading this 295 page Mystery / Thriller. There was considerable action, but it was not over-the-top. I liked the characters of Reeves and Brakken. The book starts as a Mystery but really turns into more of a Thriller towards the end. I would read another book written with these characters. I give this novel a 4.4 (rounded down to a 4) out of 5.
Meet Douglas Reeves, retired Army, former pilot of the Apache-64D, the best air to ground close support aircraft in the Army. Injured in action, the military told him his flying days were over, so he retired. His new home a boat named the Rapture formerly berthed in San Francisco. Then someone blew up the boat next to his and all hell breaks loose. Doug gets involved in the investigation, is told to leave it to proper authorities, but because he and another boat owner were injured by the blast, Doug takes a personal interest and the battle is on. You'll find yourself turning the pages, attempting to make sense of everything, and wondering where Doug is going next. Action on every page and even puts Doug back in an armed Apache-64D going after the bad guys. Thanks for another great read.
What an easy and enjoyable book to read. This is definitely a hard one to put down once you get started. I like that this story got straight into it with a boat blowing up in the marina. Doug Reeves boat is quite close to the explosion, and he is lucky that someone saw him fall off his boat unconscious, to pull him out of the water. Once he finds out it wasn’t an accident he sets about investing why this has happened. Someone has been searching all the boats in the marina, and not stealing anything. Once you find out what they are looking for and how much it is worth, you will understand why they are so keen to get it back. There is plenty happening in this book and it moves along at a good pace. If you like Action Thrillers, then you will certainly enjoy this story.
I'd received this book as an eARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
The story as a whole I would give 4 to 4.5 stars. I really enjoyed the story and mysterious events that led Doug Reeves into some serious detective work. The only reason why I scored this as 3 stars was due to the formatting of the Kindle version. Words were jammed together into one long sentence that made reading very difficult. I would recommend this book higher if the final version has been properly formatted.
