Brilliant action photos and informative text profile birds from around the world, such as the flightless penguins of the Antarctic and tiny South American hummingbirds, through a review of the habitats in which they live, their social structures, and behavioral characteristics.
Summary: This book is is a nonfiction picture book that has a lot of useful pictures of different types of birds, their skeletal structures, digestive system tracts, wing design diagrams, nest designs, ect. It contains A LOT of information about countless types of birds including their migration patterns, food supply, feeding strategies, regular habitats, birth facts, facts about their brain, and more. There are pictures of penguins, red robins, sparrows, flamingos, vultures, hummingbirds, to name a few.
My Thoughts: This book contains a lot of information and would be perfect for a kid who wants to learn more or is already deeply interested in types of birds. It gives a broad overview of the different species of birds while also providing specific details and fun facts about them all. I learned quite a bit that I didn't know. It's very informative.
Classroom Usage: This would obviously be used during a bird unit. I would probably read this aloud to the class and have them write down their top 10 favorite facts/new things they learned about birds. Then, I would take a poll on the board and ask them their favorite species of bird. From there, they would break up into groups depending on the bird they were most interested in, and, conbining their 10 facts, come up with a group project or presentation.
