Hard to Love #3

This Isn't Me

Rate this book
Nathan Cooper thought he had everything in life worked out; his own company, a great best friend, and all the women he could want.
That is until one night his whole outlook changed. One misunderstanding, a man instead of a woman, and just like that he was looking at guys like he never had before.

A guy he shouldn’t look at is Grey, the only problem with that is he can’t seem to stop the attraction he has to him. He doesn’t want Grey… except he does.

Greyson Green doesn’t have time for the kind of games that Nathan wants to play. He is already too close to breaking with the pressure of life. Work is stressful, and now his best friend has moved out to be with the man he loves, leaving Grey alone and unhappy. Just when he thinks things can’t get worse, he’s proved wrong when circumstances throw him into close quarters with the last person in the world he wants to be near.

Sometimes you don’t realize that what you need is the person you don’t like, a connection growing even when you try so hard to stop it. What happens when that connection is threatened, forcing you to face exactly what that person means to you? What happens when you’re faced with losing it all?

Grey is going to have to make the biggest decision of his life. Does he turn away from the one thing that could destroy him, or does he chase the guy who could be everything? The guy who spends all his time trying to convince him…

This Isn’t Me.

After being married for ten years and raising three beautiful kids I decided it was time to do something for myself. My passion for reading bled over with a need to tell the story that was repeating in my head and that was the birth of my first book. The rest they say is history.

I love the creative release that writing gives you, being able to take someone away to a different world feels amazing. As a reader I know how important that escape is, and as a writer I love to be able to give people that.

My other loves include music and reading (in case I haven't mentioned that before) and then when I have time a little more reading. I think if I could read for a living I would, but since I can't I will continue on the writing side of things.

*** Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie in exchange for a fair and honest review. ***

This Isn't Me is the third book in the Hard to Love series, and while you can skip book 1 to read it, I do recommend you read Make Me Trust before This Isn't Me, since Roman and Trey are featured prominently in this installment and you might be a bit lost otherwise. You can find my review for Make Me Trust here.

Nathan has only recently discovered he's bisexual and while it hasn't been exactly easy coming to terms with it, considering how much of a manwhore he was before, he's willing to explore this new side of himself. Only problem? It seems his body is set on exploring only with Grey, Roman's best friend. And while he's not sure he should be giving in to this attraction, since he is not ready to commit to anyone, the decision might be taken out of his hands.

Grey hasn't had the best of luck in love or life, but he makes do as best as he can, always with a big smile on his face. Only Nathan seems to look past the teasing grin and see what's underneath and soon he starts falling for Nathan. However, the fact that Nathan is now attracted to both men and women might be a deal breaker.

I loved Grey. I wanted to cuddle him one moment and slap some sense into him the next. While I understood his issues with Nathan being bisexual, considering how low his self-esteem was, I wasn't fond of him making it such a big thing. I really liked Nathan, although he was sort of brash at times, he was supportive and didn't hesitate in helping Grey when he needed him the most. Of course, he was also stubborn as all hell and I wanted to strangle him sometimes. Grey and Nathan were undeniably hot together and I just loved how Nathan knew how to push all of Grey's buttons.

It was awesome to catch up with Roman and Trey and have them so much in this book, but I feel that in some sense, they robbed a bit of protagonism to Grey and Nathan, involved as they were in almost everything that happened.

I have to admit that up to around the 75% mark I was a whole lot happier with the book than I ended up being, but that's because I don't particularly like threesomes, and also I have kind of a pet peeve regarding grovelling after a character messes up as badly as one of them did in this book and while that diminished my enjoyment of the book, I'm sure others might feel differently.

Despite my personal issues, this was a great read, filled with likeable characters and an enticing storyline that kept me turning the pages and wondering how it would play out until the very end. Recommendable!

Rating: 4 Stars!!!

Wow! What an angst filled ride this was. Nathan and Grey are the best friends of Roman and Trey. And this is Nathan and Grey's story. Nathan is a successful self employed software designer and he is straight (or is he?). Grey is a nurse and an out and proud gay man. They have had some minor interactions with each other through their mutual friendship but when Grey's apartment burns down Nathan steps up to give Grey somewhere to live. Nathan has been struggling with his sexuality and finds himself drawn to Grey. Poor Grey is also seriously attracted to Nathan but he thinks that Nathan is just using him to experiment since Nathan has not made any secret in that he is in no way looking to settle down. Especially with a man!

However when these two guys seriously communicate with each other Nathan feels so much more than he wants to and Grey find himself sharing some of his past. You see Grey has a few demons and has only felt comfortable sharing this information with Nathan.

I loved watching their relationship grow and catching up with Roman and Trey's relationship was a plus.

I wished several times Nathan and Grey would just get over themselves and tell each other how they felt. They relied on Roman and Trey way too much and there were times I wanted to scream at them to get their crap together.

All and all I loved this book and I cannot wait for more from T.A. McKay!!

Great end to this series

This is a 4.5* book, I'm knocking half off for the annoying editing and grammatical errors which are unfortunately throughout the book.

I'm also sure I've already read this but given its release date, I can't have done so I'm confused but nevertheless, this book rounds out this series exceptionally well.

Nathan and Grey are my favourite pairing, they're funny, infuriating, complex and confusing but their HEA is well drawn and the journey to it is believable and well earned.

There are some wonderful moments in this book and some truly awful ones where you just want to knock their heads together.

I wish we could see more of their lives but I understand why the author has chosen to end it here.
Oh and the cover definitely gets a thumbs up, one of the better ones of the MM books I've read recently.

I enjoyed this book although some parts I found especially aggravating.

Grey and Nathan were a cute couple, although I found the sex scenes to be quite lacking. I also didn't like how the story seems to skip past events where we have seen all the build up. This was similar with the sex scenes where we have lots of sexual tension but very little actual action!

What really pissed me off was how Grey continued to question Nathan and his bisexuality! He effectively believed that Nathan would leave him because he would miss sex with women and therefore Nathan just wasn't 'gay enough' for Grey. *massive eye roll* I could have forgiven Grey if this topic was brought up once, Nathan explained and then Grey saw the error of his completely offensive views towards bisexuality, however this was not the case and Grey brought up this issue many times throughout the book (including at the very end during the HEA!). This made me very very angry and to be honest I couldn't really give a shit about Grey after all that.

I also felt like anxiety disorders were not accurately portrayed in the book and just seemed to be used as a convenient plot device to move things along rather than being a true facet of Grey's character.

Nathan on the other hand, was an interesting character, however again some parts of him just don't seem to make sense. There was no true reasoning for why he was so anti-monogamy and he seemed to constantly be thinking one thing but acting a completely different way which never seemed to fully gel with the storyline. Again these actions seemed to be lazy plot devices used to solely push forward the story rather than truly being part of character development.

It was nice to re-visit Trey and Roman. They seemed to dominate all of the scenes they were in but I LOVE me some Romeo-dancing-at-Crave action when Trey is watching!

Overall I liked this book but wish that the characters were a little bit more likeable and that the story didn't seem to jump around so much.

Solid 3 stars from me!

'I’ve never thought of spending forever with someone but I honestly think I could with Grey.'

Nathan and Grey are mutual friends of Trey and Roman, the couple from the previous book.
Nathan is Trey's best friend and Grey is Roman's and was also his roommate.
Nathan and Grey get to know each other through their friends getting together, they push each other's buttons and Nathan especially loved getting under Grey's skin.
They start to hang out a couple of times and when things start to crumble around Grey it's Nathan that's there and soon they can't really deny that attraction between them.
Nathan is figuring out his sexuality and the new found realization that he's bi.
Falling for Nathan isn't easy for Grey especially when Grey too is questioning Nathan's sexuality and intentions.
But can they really go their separate ways?

'I know he thinks that he's escaping me. But that’s where he's wrong. My addiction to Mr. Green just became a very real thing.'

I'm genuinely going to miss all these characters and this series so much. It's sad that it's ending so I'm hoping we get to visit them again in the future whether it's new characters or even it's revisiting old characters in a novella because they're hard to say goodbye to!

Now back to the book...

I loved Grey and Nathan together. I loved the hesitation of falling but falling so hard anyway.
I loved the banter and the somewhat love/hate tension that was there a little.
I love the fact that they didn't even realize how much they needed the other person, that they found what they weren't even looking for.
I got frustrated with them for sure. They were both assholes at one time another, more one character than the other, they were stubborn and scared and again, frustrating but they are meant to be. They're not perfect but they fit together.

“Only you, Grey. You were my first, and only, guy.”

I really don't wanna end this review because then it means really saying goodbye and it kind of hurts! A lot! I'm glad they all get their happily ever after, I loved the friendships formed, the love between friends and family.

Also, I've got to mention Nathan's lack of filter, especially when it came to embarrassing poor Trey. Hilarious!

A great ending to a series.
I'm going to miss them. So hard.

This series in not the simple sweet uncomplicated romance full of I love you, flowers, hearts and warm feelings from the heart type of book!!! No this book is: FIGHT YOUR FEELINGS to the bitter end type of read. It's diffidently one of the more exciting series I've read and also the more frustrating one as well especially this book in particular along with the first book Worth the Fight. More than once I felt Nathan didn't deserve Grey's devotion and love especially when the situation came up with Jared!!! That was just a bitter taste and feeling I couldn't get rid of and left me feeling Nathan just didn't give a dam about Grey and was only concerned about himself and his own fantasies. This has a HEA ending but I think I was still bitter. Lol

I will admit I was a little skeptical of this book, because I loved book 1 Worth The Fight but was so disappointed with book 2 Make Me Trust...
But my skepticism was however proved wrong, because this book was so fucking amazing!

Nathan and Grey's story was really sweet, they have some up and down, before they get to their HEA.

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

3.5 Stars

Although This Isn’t Me could technically be read as a standalone I would recommend you read at least book 2 in the series as both MC’s feature in that story. I loved Trey and Roman’s story in Make Me Trust and now we get to see what happens when alcohol and chemistry bring together their best friends Grey and Nathan. They have a real love/hate relationship to begin with which actually runs through most of the story.

Greyson is out and proud and to all his friends he is the life and soul of the party – always smiling and always cheerful, oh how outward appearances can fool people. I liked Grey a lot and he broke my heart a couple of times dealing with his anxiety – those shower scenes were just devastating. With his best friend finding love and moving out of their apartment he is lonely and not coping very well. When his apartment is destroyed in a fire it’s almost too much to cope with but suddenly Nathan is there and maybe things aren’t as bad as they seem.

Nathan was the quintessential straight manwhore until he had a threesome and for the first time another man touched him and he liked it. Nathan doesn’t really struggle with the fact that he is bisexual as he sees it as opening his playing field up even more. What he does struggle with is his attraction to Grey which is getting more difficult to deal with now the man is staying with him.

Nathan and Grey are good together for short periods of time that usually involve sex but I hated the way Nathan messed him around so much. The whole thing with Jared was a nightmare, a really badly thought out nightmare, and the way Nathan treated Grey afterwards cemented my dislike for him even more. They do get their HEA but it was hard work – I loved Grey, hated Nathan and needed a little less angst.

Ok Nathan was a straight up asshole. You can be bi and not be a whore but that's the way he made it appear. That bisexuality is not being content with either sex so just having it all over the place! And grey omg guy can't take a hint I mean stand up for yourself, play hard to get, get a date something besides being a complete doormat.

This was my favorite of the series. I liked both MC's and their chemistry was great. This book seemed more planned out/thought out then the previous two. Still could use some better editing but for some reason I enjoyed this one much more than the previous two.

Angsty, delicious awesomeness!!! That’s what “This Isn’t Me” is…..so good!! I’m not surprised, however. This whole series is really pinging all of my “YES” zones. I want to note even though it’s not really significant that this author is pulling off an “American” series pretty good.

Nathan Cooper loves love. And he’s just realizing that he loves it in any form. Watching his best friend fall in love has only proven the fact that he likes variety. Or so he thinks.

Grey is torn. He’s an amazing nurse, has amazing friendships but he’s incredibly lonely and dealing with personal demons. He’s absolutely unprepared for his best friends, boyfriends’ best friend….

Nathan and Grey get together under completely rocky circumstances but its good. Really good and they find themselves in a situation where they can enjoy each other as much as they want, but at what cost? As their physical relationship grows so does their feelings and both men don’t have a clue as to how to deal with them.

This was such a great addition to the series. It had elements that were so different than the other books. I loved how this author made the characters so complex and it ultimately just made them so much more endearing.

Overall, this was a great addition to the series. I really, really love this author and her books and it’s no surprise that I can’t wait for the next book in the series. This was a WIN!!

Recommend for everyone but especially lovers of the series!!

Wow, what a roller coaster ride!

So I added this book to my tbr pile based off of a recommendation from a group and then decided to just go ahead and read it next. I’m so glad I did! It was just the right amount of angst for me. Some of the scenes really hit me right in the feels and I love when that happens since it means I was really able to connect with the characters. I absolutely LOVED the banter between both the MCs and the secondary characters. The book started out a bit slow but I didn’t really notice it until I neared the end and then EVERYTHING just happened so quickly and back to back. So that contrast really stood out. I’m pretty sure this was a stand alone? I didn’t read any of the rest of the series and was able to follow along just fine....I will probably go back and start with book one though since the series has now peaked my interest.

Grey and Nathan were a great way to end this story.

Grey and Nathan pull at all the heart strings, finding the one person who makes you feel complete regardless of gender is special. Their story is a true story of love, and how sometimes life knows you better than you know yourself.

His issues were never fully solved and his biphobia was dreadful.

This was actually my very first T. A McKay book (hides head in shame) and I have to say....I quite enjoyed it.

This Isn't Me is about Nathan and Grey. Let's talk about Nathan first, shall we? Nathan is one cocky man. In the last year, he has come to terms with the fact that...along with being attracted to women, he is also attracted to men. Has he really acted on it, no. But then there's Grey. Nathan and Grey's bff's are in a relationship, so these two are going to be around each other. And, there's definitely some serious attraction between these two. Along with some friendly nagging. Of course, Grey is like this....I don't know how to describe it. Sweet, innocent little boy and I just wanted to hug him. In the beginning, I did not think Nathan could or would do right by him. And, he almost didn't. He almost screwed up. And poor Grey-it nearly broke him. And there I was just wanting to hug him some more :(

And without giving away too much here, let's just say this is a book with an HEA. But the story to that HEA is a must read in my opinion. I like T.A McKay and I was lucky enough to receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Her writing was pretty flawless, and I was so engrossed in the story that if there were any editing issues, I really didn't see them. These character's were well developed, and she made me feel. And in my opinion, an author who gives me the feels is a pretty damn good author. She's going to be one of my one click read's from now on, that's for sure ;)

Sometimes the small details count...

Again..I loved the characters in this series. They all extraordinary on their own and they're explosive together.
However I dropped a star when the details change...like Nathan has a house but half through it was referred to as an apartment...and no one caught that?? Also a "three-some" really?? So not in Character for Nathan...just the thought of someone else touching Grey drove him mad. The big issue between the should have been Nic....it was building up to her being the problem with her jealousy and possessive attitude. Also it was Grey's deepest worry that Nathan would leave him for a girl. Neither one of them were attracted to Jared and they even went as far to admit it to each other before the idea of a three-some. There is something deep that is supposed to happen when the man you love rolls into the ER...that something that takes you over the edge with him.... but then it missed. The delay of noticing who was brought in and the reaction killed the mood that would have earned this book a ten star rating. I was at that point when I couldn't hold back the tears but the delivery was flat and my emotions stunted. I did really like the story but I really could have loved it.

Right where do i begin?

I was lucky enough to beta read this as the story got told.
The connection i felt with these characters as i watched them develop was absolutely outstanding.

Nathan and Grey have a different kind of story to Trey and Roman's one.
You meet Nathan in their book and you get completely sucked into their story but you also have that niggling feeling that you want to know more about Nathan.

Grey was a absolute sweetheart.
Soft hearted.
Hard in all the right places.
The thing Nathan really needs but is too stubborn to actually see.
Grey helps Nathan with his feelings but Nathan and Grey had two different wave lengths for a while.
I just knew one was going to be in for a world of hurt.

This book really got me in the feels and i really don't know how to process that fact it's finished.
No more Nathan and Grey in my Inbox.
No more smart jokes from Nathan.
No more sweet side from Grey.
How am i supposed to move on now?

If Nathan and Grey spiked your interest in Trey and Roman's book then you really won't be disappointed.

T.A. Mckay I'm still going to stalk you.
Just a warning ;)

I am such a sucker for a GFY story line and this one definitely hits the spot. Nathan has never been interested in having a relationship and has had more than his share of one night stands with women so when he is introduced to Grey, he doesn't understand the attraction he has for the younger man. After spontaneously kissing Grey, Nathan decides to put some distance between them in the hopes that these feelings will disappear. Fate however, has different ideas and the two are thrown together. I loved the slow build of their relationship and the vulnerability of Grey, which is something we haven't seen of him before. There are many times when you just want to knock their heads together and tell them to open their eyes. There's so much happens in this book and there's never a dull moment so the reader is constantly kept on their toes.

This is the third book in the series and you are better to have read the first two, as the same characters run through them all and we get kept up to date with the couples from the previous books. For me, this is the best one of the three and I wish there was more.

5 big, beautiful, brilliant, emotional stars. This book is the kind of book that gives you a pick me up. The range of emotions you experience, will put your heart through the ringer, but it will be so complete when you finish this tale of two lovers who never saw their relationship coming.

When someone who loves everything a woman can give him starts looking at a man in that same way, he starts to question everything about himself. Nathan is a ladies man but something about Grey pulls him in. way that he CNT fight. He suddenly feels jealous and protective of this man.

Watching Nathan discover himself and learn how to love someone is truly a heartwarming and sensitive thing. This book was absolutely perfect and I wish there was more. I'm greedy like that. When you find an author that can GRB your heart and make you fall in love with her writing, you keep her on the top of your list and stalk every move she makes. T.A. McKay is now on that list..

This Isn't Me by TA McKay is book three in the Hard to Love Series and is Nathan and Grey's story. It's another great m/m romance that will hook you from the very first page, it's a story of self discovery and about opening your heart up to true love.

Nathan Cooper as always thought of himself as been straight but a threesome one night involving another man has left him questioning his sexuality.

Greyson Green is gay and proud. He suffers with anxiety and just wants someone to share his life with.

Greyson and Nathan have this sexual chemistry whenever they are together but neither one is prepared to make the first move both are scared that if anything was to happen it would ruin their friendships with Roman and Trey will they both finally face their fears and admit they are ment to be together.
