I honestly can't tell if it is the book that was great or the life of Saint Charbel. The story of his life contained within the pages has really opened my eyes not only to just how incredible he is, but also just how amazing God is.

Saint Charbel, pray for us!

5/5⭐

Daher provided a history of Saint Charbel’s death, life, and beatification while exploring the origins of the Maronite Catholic Church and its monastic tradition which provided the foundation for the first Saint from Lebanon. I found the reflections on Obedience, Chastity, Poverty, Respect, Prayer, and Silence particularly interesting (100-110).

“In the amplitude of the [mystery of redemption], Sharbel sought and found God. Is the salvation of the world not continually renewed within the Holy Eucharist?” (43)

“He had chosen his vocation, he was to be a hermit. His task was to pray for his people who struggled and were suffering. As a matter of principle, Sharbel refused himself even the consolation of preaching the gospel, of expressing himself or of enriching himself by giving to others. If it is true that each soul that ascends towards the Absolute, raises up the world, does not the seemingly remote lifestyle of this man provide more benefits to others than the voice of the preacher, lost in the magic of his eloquence? His mission was to lose himself in God, the absolute Truth, the absolute Beauty, as does the river when it enters the sea, little real-ting or half-forgetting that on its way, it has turned great turbines and that its flood has irrigated the surrounding fields.” (141)

Detachment: “…that state of mind that the mystics of the desert called hesychia, when the soul gains access to the silence of the heart and its thoughts, a sort of unawareness of self which purifies man when confronted with the immaterial.” (149)

“In a divided world, frantic and nervous, his silence is a statement, his poverty and obedience a revelation.” (210)

I don't need to write a long review. It suffices to state that this is one amazing book, and it is almost inevitable that it should be since it is about an amazing holy man of God. I've been praying to St. Charbel for his help for over a year already, because I felt an unexplained attraction to him, but having now learned a lot more about him, I consider him a "proof of Christianity". The extent to which his uncorrupted body was subjected to examination and multiple exhumations, witnessed by hundreds and examined by skeptics, makes for one of the most well documented cases for an incorrupt Saint. And his miraculously reserved body is but one amazing facet of this man. There is no real way to dismiss the contents of this book other than baselessly slander all the testimonies as coming from liars or fools. And as such, only the hardest of hearts could read this and retain their disbelief in the truth of Christ, His Gospel, and His Church. I was fortunate to come across this book in my parish library. But it is unfortunate that it seems to be a book not easily obtained. I've searched to try to find more copies to purchase and give to people, but to no avail as of yet. If one has doubts or struggles with their Christian faith, please find this book and read it. It will banish any doubts from your heart. Saint Charbel, pray for us.

It’s amazing to be able to know better the life of Saint Charbel. Such a blessing. I got the chance to meet his tomb and monastery in Lebanon and I know for a fact that he’s done and is so much for the Church… by just being a Godly and completely given humble monk.

Saint Charbel Pray for us! 🙏🏼
