A look at the soon-to-be-retired host of television's The Tonight Show celebrates Carson's tenure on the program with more than two hundred photographs and interviews with staff members and guests. Original. 25,000 first printing.
Excellent, informative, well-researched book. This was actually a quick read and I learned a lot about the show, Johnny Carson hand his role and status as an entertainer and cultural icon. This was written as a bit of a love letter by the author and was never intended as tabloid sleaze or sensational expose. Real affection and warmth in this book.
I just picked this up for free at the library and began reading it on my bus-ride home. I almost missed my stop because I became so engrossed! My favorite part thus far is when Tiny Tim wed's his seventeen year-old sweetheart on air - or it when Joan Rivers broker's a deal with Fox to host a rival show in the same time slot forcing a firm wedge between her and Carson, her former mentor? Can't wait for more hijinks and hilairity!
Johnny Carson has always fascinated me and I sincerely wish that I could have been there through his reign as King of Late Night. However, I was too young to embrace him.
This book does a great job of giving an intro to Carson's life. I felt like I was able to live through some moments. Now it's on to YouTube to watch some of his famous clips.
Johnny Carson was host of the Tonight Show three decades prior to Jay Leno. The book looks at the format of the show and some of the many guests both famous and not so famous. Also cover is an analysis of Carson's style and his use of guest hosts instead of re-runs like Leno and Fallon. It is a very interesting and informative read. My copy was a free copy from Turner publishing.
