Very good overall, and I give it 4 stars because it is absolutely accurate that coconut and MCT oils improve brain function. I have been amazed and grateful in seeing improvements in mood and cognitive sharpness, firsthand. The book does a great job at explaining the mechanism of ketosis and how coconut oil and MCT oils assist in ketosis. However, I look forward to an updated version that includes clear information about the importance of eliminating grains and advocates sugar-free eating, as well. This book touched on the effectiveness and importance of limiting carbohydrates, and explains how brain function is damaged by too much carbohydrate intake, but then it seems to contradict itself by including a fair amount of grains and sugars in several suggested recipes. One would do much better to replace their carbohydrates with healthy fats (such as coconut oil) versus spread the oil onto carbs. Overall, terrific, factual, important, scientific, compassionate, and practical information about coconut oil, which can greatly improve health, brain function, and quality of life so I shared this book with family members coping with early stages of dementia, and I hope they will try the suggestions and see improvement.

Absolutely recommend this! I didn't read Newport's first book, which she recommends as giving more background information, but this is still a very handy read. Her thesis is that she and many others have found dietary interventions for neurological disorders very effective, and we should not only attempt to replicate their success but raise awareness about our results to encourage more scientific research to be done on the subject. There are so few possible side effects to dietary changes like eating more coconut oil and fewer carbohydrates that it seems a wonderful way for both sufferers and caregivers to take some control over the diseases that they face.

The recipes were not particularly inspiring, but the world is full of coconut oil and low-carb recipes, so I didn't mind that. Still an excellent resource!
